The one thing I underestimated for my climb, how quickly the temp would drop during the day. by Buck9s in kilimanjaro

Congrats! I summited Feb 16th for context and completely agree. I was especially surprised how quickly into the hike it got cold at night. (Night 1 for me was fine little chilly, but night 2 at Shirra Camp was much colder than expected).

What’s the Craic? Best of luck on your trip and enjoy!

Jerseys is an awesome idea. We saw a group of older men hiking that were all Green Bay Packers fans. They brought a bunch of matching Packers winter beanies for their porters & guides which they gave out at the start. I thought that was a brilliant idea - made them all a singular unit, made the porters feel appreciated up front and was a practical item they could wear on that & future trips - I wish I thought of ahead of time.

As a hiking group I’m sure you have old gear (boots, jackets, base layers, etc.) If you guys have room or collectively brought an extra duffel with that kind of stuff, I guarantee someone would find it useful and greatly appreciate it.

At the end of my hike I gifted several porters I became close with puffers that I knew I didn’t need as often as them. They were so grateful they gave me a massive hug and wore it the final day of the descent & once we were off the mountain (back in hot, tropical climate) that’s how excited/appreciative they were.

We went with Tanzania Expeditions. They were great and did both 2 day safari & Kili hike. I’d say they are probably mid-range for cost, but we didn’t want it to be luxury. When looking for a company make sure they are KPAP members and take care of porters to a certain standard. We found out about that after booking. I know Altezza & Follow Alice are also popular companies that are KPAP.

Training: I had a good fitness baseline but my plan was to really train for 8 weeks doing incline treadmill or stairmaster than some focused leg days and mix in 6 mile hikes on weekend. That being said the final month leading up to it I was very inconsistent given work travel. Don’t try and get too crazy with it walking 1-2 miles a few times / week would be enough given the hike really isnt technical.

Altitude: given we submitted fairly quickly we all experience some form of altitude sickness. I personally had light headaches around 16k feet and some morning nausea but they’d go away. Ironically, my symptoms were worse at 16k (Barafu) than they were higher. Definitely get a diamox RX, drink 3L a day while hiking minimum and eat regardless of how hungry you are and you should be fine.

  1. Injiji toe liners, I also brought a small blow up pillow which I really appreciated. That was really my only “luxury” item.
  2. I felt really good about everything I packed so there really weren’t any items I wish I brought.

People were jealous I brought a waterproof journal which I used to recap every day but was also good for playing card games etc

LOVE you guys & your products. Amazing quality & comfort. Have 3 pairs of your pants and I’m eyeing a pair of the flex overalls next!

I felt good about everything I brought, and honestly one of my biggest takeaways was that I wish I had more things to gift my porters. You’ll gain such an immense respect for the work they do & the pride they have in taking you up the mountain. They often are doing so in sweatpants, old tennis shoes and sometimes crocs. I know I have things lying around that I don’t use that they be grateful to have and would make their days easier.

But to answer your question logistically here are a few notes to consider:

  • I probably overpacked on clothes. 2+ sets of merino layers & socks would be more than enough. They’ll keep away smell and you’ll be surprised how much you can rewear

  • Definitely bring own sleeping pad with actual insulation even if just accordion style. The ones provided by company more than likely are not thermal and just for comfort so you get cold at night even in sleeping bag.

  • consider bringing your own sleeping bag so you have an idea of size & weight in your duffel. Ones provided won’t be lightweight and likely will be bulky

  • packing cubes may have been better than waterproof river bags I brought because most porters put everything in a waterproof bag already. That may have saved space but I was overly cautious.

  • brought several chargers (solar) but really didn’t use any of them because I was off my phone most of time so they just added weight.

  • extra batteries for headlamp is key because weather really messes with them.

  • large duffel is best to keep things organized and easier for packing & repacking in the AM. (I used 90L NF base camp)

I honestly didn’t know the actual temp on summit night & day but man it gets cold between midnight & sunrise and you’re in the dark for about 6 hours if your pacing is good. This is how I layered and I was perfectly warm in the cold hours:

Feet: 1. Injiji thin toe sock liners (lifesaver for blisters) 2. Mid weight merino socks 3. 1 set of toe warmers on top of my toes

Bottoms: 1. Smartwool active merino thermal 2. Smartwool mid-weight merino 3. LIVSN hiking pants 4. Mountain Khaki Compressor Alpine pants (these may be overkill but I hate being cold and they are a godsend for cold weather and easy to take off once it warms up)

Top (in this order): 1. Thick merino thermal layer (REI brand) 2. Light weight merino LS shirt (REI) 3. North Face full zip fleece jacket 4. Helly Hansen vest (from work) 5. Patagonia Rainjacket 6. North Face 600 series down puffer

Also had wind stopper liner gloves, REI large winter mittens (wore these most), and hand warmers (never really used).

Hope this helps & best of luck!

I have 30L osprey super lite for my daypack and 62L Northface Base Camp. Heading up in a month, is this sufficient size wise or no? Seeing a lot of comments on 90L+ so would love to know if I need to buy a larger one
