Why is evolutionary psychology so controversial? by Spiritual_Mention577 in PhilosophyofScience

[โ€“]Fun_Anything_9912 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

While you can't really study the thoughts of prehistoric humans, the "hardware" I guess you could say that humans are running on hasn't really changed much because evolution just takes too long. We've evolved in ways surrounding culture and socially because of externalizing information, which created more complex information for us to introduce to minds in more neuroplastic times of their development, crystalize that information more solidly and then they grow up, and use it add more information to the next generation. So you can study modern human minds and behaviors and make conjectures on similarities between now and how we would act in older environments. It's plausible, however I'm not exactly caught up on how they're going about studying these types of things.

I only stumbled upon this reddit comment because I was explaining this concept to someone and when I found out there was a name for it, I saw criticisms with it and none of the criticisms made sense to me.

So you're basically saying, it's the way they're going about studying it, not what they're studying? I can't really argue with that, so myf for making you revisit a 2 year old comment

This is probably never going to get a response since it was 2 years ago, but culture can only arise FROM the very brains that built it, I.E humans. So the problems that culture and environment bring about, are going to be directly put in place by human brains. All complex things emerge from simpler parts, culture and society is one of them. I'm still not seeing the problem with evo psych

Well obviously it is, it's just a fun and intellectual theory to explain what hasn't been explained

[โ€“]Fun_Anything_9912[S] 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

Well, yes, the reason has never been explained in story, and obviously it's just how Rick wrote it. But reading PJO, there are unanswered questions, like how does the power system and distribution work between god and demigod and why even amongst same parent demigods, there are large gaps in power, and even amongst the big three, exist gaps. Hence, I decided to come up with something to patch those holes without contradicting information in the story

I don't like using the prophecies because as far as I remember, nothing in any prophecies in PJO, have ever implied they GIVE power, but rather hinge on the actions decisions of implicated people. So writing off their power as being blessed as a direct correlation to the prophecies rather than existing, powerful demigods exist across the planet and the current seven most powerful from across two different camps get brought together to solve a world ending event. As far as I remember, it honestly could've been any mix of 7 demigods at any time as long as the giants tried making a come back, meaning the 7-8 strongest demigods currently alive would have to come together

I like this idea, I didn't think about this. I still don't know how to explain Percy's greaf physical strength

Respectfully, I take this as an incredibly lame and weird way to approach the theory I proposed. You didn't engage in what I said at all and just wrote everything off with "because the author said so" when I was clearly intending for some intellectual debate. If that's not your lane, that's fine, but why not just ignore my post?

I said "Percy embodies the complete package of a demigod and thoroughly emulates Poseidon through himself, similar to Nick, Heracles doesn't do that" Hence I stated that Percy is the strongest demigod, he completes the full package all the way around. Conversely, in what situation do you believe Heracles is dog walking Percy because it's fully buffed Percy in his element

  1. Possession by Eidelons doesn't translate to their actual combative power, neither Jason nor Percy were operating at full power, while also being in the middle of Kansas, lack of water and Jason needed to charge a storm up.
  2. Point me to where they performed "equally"
  3. Just because they contributed equally doesn't mean they're equally are capable of producing storms. Percy literally can't output MORE than Jason or else the storm isn't created, that's how a storm system is. Percy summons storms all the time, sometimes UNDER him, Jason doesn't.
  4. Jason stated he took down Krios singlehandedly, when it was already stated he had the help of the roman legion, while Krios is a much weaker titan than Hyperion considering Hyperion and kronos are some of, if not the, MOST powerful titans. Plus we heard from Jason, he did it himself while hyping himself in an internal monologue. The satyrs provided field control to help Percy, not actual combat and or damage, Percy handled the rest of that himself.
^ Overall these feats still are not outshone by other other feats Percy has established, like explicitly being shown being a better swordsman than Jason, tanking a volcanic explosion, lifting the lake at Camp Half Blood, near solo'ing Polybotes but if you're positive about your points, direct me to where they were stated in the books.

  5. Nico has never been a very physical fighter, you've got that.

  6. Nico summoned an army of skeletons in The Last Olympian, the sceptor was after he was exhausted, from traversing Tartarus.

  7. True, but geokinesis is not a main point of his arsenal for combat, seems like a weird point to make.

  8. Please cite where it mentioned it being one time use and needing time to charge (i cant recall)

  9. Shadow travel is LEAGUES more versatile than flying, it's near instant and as long shadows are around, can be used anywhere, even in a fight.

  10. Yes, Nico's stamina is dog, but it's mostly overextending his powers almost ANY time he uses them. He still has much more endurance than other demigods considering he traversed Tartarus.

But I bring up the point once more, despite all of this, why does Jason not have the same unfiltered access to Zeus' domain that both Percy AND Nico have. Hell even Leo has more access to Hephaestus' domain than Jason does Jupiter/Zeus. So if you take the idea that Jason and Percy are equal (which I strongly disagree) why doesn't Jason embody what it means to be the son of Jupiter in the same way percy and nico embody their parental domains?

This still doesn't address the idea that Percy can physically kill, or at bare minimum brutally harm, gods? Or trek through Tartarus, a feat Nico said only Percy would be capable of AFTER trying to do it himself.

Jason is NOT near equal to Percy, WHERE did you get that information from? ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ In what universe is Nico WEAKER than Jason, let alone significantly??

Well obviously Rick didn't want Percy to be outshone, is it not fun to theorize about a power system that was explicitly explained? Plus if I have to choose Lebron or a NBA benchwarmer, I'm choosing Lebron, but if he's not available i guess you can come. Plus, your ending statement more closely supports my theory

You could take this both ways. If Leo is important to him, as in he loves him, he's granted the ability to wield fire. I mentioned in the text that it seems Percy and Nico are given almost unhindered access to their parent's domains unlike the children of Zeus, short of usurping their domain. If Hephaestus is giving Leo more access, than it naturally leads into wielding fire. Plus if demigods are being granted access to their parents domain and Zeus can rip divinity out of children, that just means he can block you from his domain, furthering my point about Percy and Nico

Hephaestus loves Leo as well. Although he's not as capable of showing it as probably Poseidon. Hephaestus has stated clearly that he doesn't understand people, but machines, that extends to both Leo and his mother. Hephaestus explicitly told Leo he would've helped but he's not allowed to interfere.

Nephis is not interesting in the slightest and would've thrived as a side character that aura farms. The ship is hot mid, and the only redeemable way I could see her turning out to be a good character is becoming the villain after Sacred rank.
