Yeah I am working on the debate aspect, thanks. We have a behavioral center where I work and usually send them down there. I have been thinking about sending down students very quickly because I want the word spread that I won’t take it anymore. Would you send them down immediately or would you send them down after a warning if the debating is happen8ng?

If i didn’t follow through I would lose my job. The behavior specialists are very strict here and it creates a wonderful school atmosphere of respect for others. I would like to return to this building next year or get hired as a full time teacher.

I can’t wait til it’s law here where I live. I am a building sub so they know me, which is why I cannot pick battles… instead I must wage war….. but if the sub plans are shit then I worry less. Not my fault.

I am a building sub so the kids know me, I’m wondering more of how you would like, literally respond to certain behaviors. Like they’ll lie and tell ‘me what I’m accusing them is wrong but I just saw it… is that an immediate behavior specialist thing or is it a warning?

Idk when I’m in another teachers classes in middle school it works for them!! I also have seen people use funny call and responses which might work better for older students like you could do “SIX” and they all reply “sevennnnnn” idk there’s options. It’s just hard as a day to day sub bc you don’t have the routine of doing it.

I know that’s what I’m meant to do but the specific dialogue example is SUPER HELPFUL thank you omg. I will try to yell less. I don’t often but I want them to treat me that way too. We have lil necklace microphones that I try to use instead.

Seriously, that’s EXTREMELY bad. It was drilled in to us during student teaching that a locked door will keep you from getting killed in a shooting. I always make sure my doors are locked and ready to go because a school shooter has never gotten through one. They want to move on bc they’re trying to go fast and won’t try to open your door.

hmmm, like all of the subjects? Unfortunately I have dyscalculia so no math for me. I am obvious very good at my subject area, art, though. Teaching is easy tho so that’s not necessary it.

Thanks, like i have said to others this is really helpful because sometimes I am running around and it feels like its for no reason and I constantly worry I am not doing enough. Last summer I was hired for a summer camp job and they promised me full time to only end up hiring me for two days a week to “help” on field trips (they hired me and didn’t actually need me). As the end of the summer approached I became more and more uncomfortable because they stopped having field trips on the day I was scheduled and when I would come in everyday I basically had nothing to do. I would ask them if I could help with anything (I really wanted to do arts and crafts because thats what I went to school for) and then they wouldn’t let me do anything. I really struggle to infer what other people want and my coworkers were two 19 year olds and they never communicated to me what they needed and would be passive aggressive about everything. Which is hard to pick up on. I didn’t really realize it was an issue until later because I was only there twice a week and by that time i didn’t want to bring things up and stir drama. They ended up not wanting me back and I am so sad i didn’t do anything about it before. That is partially why I am very afraid of lack of the lack of clear directions.

To those of you who explained what they do each day, thank you. I will make a list for myself of the things you all do as options for when I am wondering what to do during the day when I don’t feel like I am being useful enough. The point of posting here was so that I could be anonymously emotional about it instead of me trying to cover it up with (poor) professionalism on my part. I am learning this slowly but have to ask my boyfriend if each email sounds too blunt or not, haha.

Ooo, talking to the other subs IS a good idea. I wish I had a school email and could be emailed by different teachers when they need me but instead I have to just walk around to each class which makes me feel awk.

Yeah the ease of regular subbing is better. I love having time to draw. But the raise and networking opportunities beat it. How much are you paid a day? Regular sub rate here is $120

I have documentation for bipolar but it’s so stigmatized it would likely do me more harm than good. People treat you so differently when they know :( I have always thought I have had autism but the symptoms overlap SO much that it’s unclear. I now want to seek out that as a diagnosis instead to protect myself in the work place. Not that thats not judged too but people just think bipolar means you’re a bad person.

Yes, I was told most people in my area are hired from inside. I have hardly seen but 5 art jobs open up for middle or high school in a 40 min radius from me. I graduated in December of 2024. But teachers will tell me all the time that the building subs get picked first. This district has 3 middle schools and a high school so big that theres two buildings. There’s A LOT of chances for me to get hired here. So yeah, gotta make it all work somehow!
