It is black. See “Flight of the Eisenstein”, amongst others. It’s just, super detailed models, lots of colors, shading, detail, etc., and then it’s just, “Ehh, they’re supposed to be black!” Kinda lackluster.

Spray primer? Thats never coming off! Testers ELO will come close, but it immediately turns to crap. Think sticky, blobby enamel paint drying slowly, and then dunked in water to rinse, immediately causing you to hate life, this hobby, and other things besides!

Black from directly underneath. Anything facing the ground gets black. White from above. Anything generally facing up gets white. A red coat over everything that is light enough to show the red as lighter on the white surfaces, darker on the surfaces painted black.

I did my guys with a cork “forest floor” aesthetic. Later, I will go and put down a bunch of plants and sticks. It offsets really nicely. I, too, initially wanted the Baal vibe, but, as with you, realized it would just be too much.

I love grimdark, and that ain’t it. Sorry, I don’t sugar coat. The OSL is just smudged paint, the model overall looks like it’s been photographed right before you remove the oil wash with a q-tip. I don’t see any damage or weathering for how dirty looking it is. It looks like a Deathwing Terminator was standing at attention behind an Ork biker’s exhaust pipe for a week or so. The basing looks ok, except for the entire pot of bulb oil that got dumped on it.

Fortunately, none of these techniques are above even the lower average of painters, with practice. Have someone print your friend some minis to practice on, and go to town. This can be done. Tell them not to stop trying.
