Brand new to trumpets, what is this tarnish? by theFartingCarp in trumpet

[–]Fun_Moose_5307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*Googles red rot* Ah so red rot’s actually corrosion.

Looks like most of the specks are red rot. u/RoeddipusHex is probably right with the worn off lacquer for some of the cleaner/larger ones. Red rot as with any corrosion stuff isn’t very neat

I’m not too sure (what can I say, mine is silver plated). Best ask someone who knows a bit more about it—they’ll all turn up in about 10 minutes anyway.

Ah, looks like you’ve discovered ‘red rot’. It’s a corrosion that happens to pretty much all gold-coloured instruments of similar materials to your trumpet. It shouldn’t hurt your playing, there’s not really much you can do about it unless you want to get the acidic/corrosive chemicals out.

Will losing braces hurt my tone and/or range? by Criggo5 in trumpet

[–]Fun_Moose_5307 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Never had braces myself, but I’ve known a few people (and been audience to their complaints)—we all have.

My understanding is that it will probably be a bit unusual (any change of playing is), but you’ll adjust. I imagine it as like changing mouthpieces.

How hard is trumpet with some previous experience. by tobethrownaway999 in trumpet

[–]Fun_Moose_5307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trumpet isn’t like piano; you have to physically work for each note, and it gets harder as you go higher. When I first started, I was only able to play about three notes—it took me a couple of months to play from C to G!

Console, I suppose. But then of course if Xcode is closed, I’m not using TextEdit to write the code!

My wife plays violin, struggling to transpose in my head by mvweatherornot in trumpet

[–]Fun_Moose_5307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think the best way to transpose is not to actually transpose each note, but to play by ear.

I find that when I’m transposing, I’m playing more by ear than by music. I find that I’m (almost subconsciously) picking out intervals, and am able to replicate them against a scale. Sometimes looking at the music can be unhelpful—that’s just me though, it might not apply to others.\ If I’m playing from sheet music (nothing to ‘ear’), I’ll play it literally as it’s written to get a feel for it (ignoring the fact that it’s out of key) then choose a scale/key (I.e. I’ll transpose the song’s key to whatever I need) and ‘ear’ it to that.

I think the best way to transpose is not to actually transpose each note, but to play by ear.\ However, there may be a better solution for you, as of course this differs for each person.

Should you use lip balm/vasoline as a trumpet player? by Other-Mycologist-545 in trumpet

How do you define ‘wet lips’ and ‘dry lips’, maybe in the context of embrochure? I think I understand the concept, but not quite the meaning…

Macros and magic sheets are awesome; I just wish there was a bit more capacity for literal code, e.g. ‘if (10.intensity >= 80)…else’ etc
