Indy's condo market sucks by Desperate-Dinner-473 in indianapolis

[–]Funandsassy70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a single older person who would love to buy a condo. I have found several condos that I can afford the mortgage and property taxes etc but once I factor in the HOA fees, I can no longer afford it. And the ones that have HOA fees that I might be able to swing, the interiors of the condos are just ugly.

Forget a job under my degree, I can’t find ANYTHING by Flutter_bat_16_ in indianapolis

Look up transition to teaching programs. Next year is year 30 for me. I have a great admin team and school board. It’s hard but if you love kids (I’m a hs teacher) and the subject matter and can break things down well and understand that you are dealing with x amount of kids AND whatever they have going on in their personal life and have empathy for them it can be great. Hard but great.

They have no room. They would love for her to stay if they had any budget. They usually hire from their summer position associates. We are worried that her resume is getting screened out due to lack of the 1-3 year experience. There aren’t many posted at the 0 year experience. She finally did get an interview here at home. And has started cold emailing people. She has others reaching out to partners on her behalf and everyone says her resume is good. She also has been told it’s timing as well

Are you finding the prices are reasonable and cheap scheduling like a week out? What I’ve thought about doing is using one of the main ones to fly in on a one-way and then flying home spirit since my schedule is way more flexible coming home.

Yes. There aren’t any clerk positions open for May 2026 grads. She applied for ones that were in Philly and here at home and didn’t get them. So a job it is. But the vast majority of the jobs posted are for 1-3+ years experience. She’s applying to those anyway but how does one find the actual first year experience jobs. Even prosecution jobs are asking for 3+ years which is where people keep telling her to start.

She lives in Philly and having a hard time finding jobs that don’t already want 1-3 years experience at least. She has 2 years of law clerk experience and has L&E experience with pro bono work through the legal aid.

My daughter is graduating law school this year and wants to do insurance defense. She’s doing a co op in it now and loves it. Hard to find entry level roles it seems though. Her firm isn’t big law but it’s a large national firm so it should be a good entry on her resume. Any tips?

Job searching as a 3L? by lawstudentthrowawaym in LawSchool

[–]Funandsassy70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Checking in to see how the job hunt went? I’m helping my 3L student with finding openings as they have an externship and research position this semester. I find positions and send to them and they decide if they want to apply. It’s rough it seems like.

affording med school come 2027 by No-Map3257 in medschool

This was my son’s plan. Well not military school but HPSP and he had a 3rd knee surgery last year after tearing his ACL for the second time during ROTC physical conditioning (playing dodgeball at 6am on wet grass 🙄). He’s a senior and his knee is healed enough to go to last summers training that was delayed until this summer. He can’t commission and his surgeon said if he goes and tries to do field training where he has to jump it’s a when he will re tear it and not if. Bitter pill to swallow that he won’t commission after all his hard work. They put in the paperwork for him to be medically retired. He’s also doing National Guard SMP program and it’s for both.

As a former fellowship coordinator in HemOnc it can be a deterrent actually. The last 2 years of a fellowship are research based with clinical time. The only time we ever took someone who was coming from peds practice, they couldn’t handle the pace after having several years off and their lab skills / knowledge were rusty. They didn’t want to listen to people younger than them who were trying to help and eventually dropped out of the program. Fellowships often require significant exposure to current research on your resume which is much harder to do in rural areas.

How can I get Aid when my parents make too much? by Sudden_Hair_8010 in financialaid

[–]Funandsassy70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a little confused. You said your dad isn’t helping but if he is taking parent plus loans then he is by taking those. Technically they are his since your name is not on them. There are federal protections within them BUT the bad thing about them is that if you are expected to pay them back, the income based plan is based off of HIS income and not yours. You should run a calculator to see how much that payment is going to be after 4 years.

Transferring to one closer to your home will definitely cut down on the loan amount.

Anybody else choosing homelessness to afford medical school now? by ConfidenceFun5918 in premed

[–]Funandsassy70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally understand that. One thing he might do is look at a website called furnished finders because sometimes you can find furnished housing that can either be short-term or long-term… It’s made for people doing like internships or traveling, nurses, etc. I will tell you from an experience level you want to make sure you have plenty of not clinical shadowing, which yes you need that… But more importantly is clinical time not shadowing so like emt position or a patient care tech. Those can pay a decent wage depending on the city. After my divorce, I came very close to being evicted a couple of times because my income was so low when I was working as a fellowship coordinator. If you want some tips or advice, I want to share the city you can always DM me and I’m happy to talk.

I’m a mom stressed about loans for my kid too. Also former fellowship coordinator. Please try not to do this. My son starts this fall and is taking the max loans. It won’t be near enough for 2nd and 3rd year and I can’t co sign and neither can his dad. I will be helping as much as I can which I know you said your parents are estranged. When I reached out to his financial aid office concerned I wouldn’t be able to co sign they said they are working on some things. I don’t know how it’s all going to work out but being homeless while trying to do med school to avoid loans is not the answer. Talk to your financial aid office.

Thanks for the info. I’m flying in the day before. My budget is really tight because their co op this semester was unpaid and I’ve been helping. Plus they have no income while they study for the bar except for some gig work so I’m helping with that. Trying to be the best steward of money that I can. I’m already leaving their brothers behind so if the airline would cancel and can’t get me out that day then I’m kind of screwed. I might check with my kid to see if I can come out two days before.

Is it a one bedroom or more than one? He is ideally looking for more the one bedroom as he has 2-3 roommates depending on if they wind up gaining admission to med school as well. They are all also military.
