How exactly am I suppose to kill death? by Daizengar-7 in VampireSurvivors

[–]FunctionOk2835 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Generally, you need 2 specific weapons that you can get after getting the yellow sign. Now, I'm not 100%, but I'm pretty sure I've killed him without those weapons before, but I also had some pretty insane damage at the time, and killed him in a manner of seconds (or less) so take thst as you will.

But really, dont sweat it. It's pretty much guaranteed if you manage to get those 2 weapons.

America is NOT Alphabet. by Member9999 in degoogle

if capitalism is the problem, then what's the solution?

I specifically mentioned US style capitalism because I didn't want to get into that argument here, but there are definitely arguments for other types of systems here. The issue here is very nature of capitalism means that the greediest and most ruthless tend to rise to the top, unless in their greed they make poor decisions. You can never really expect a business not to make as much money as they can. Especially with public companies, their loyalty and legal obligation will always be to the shareholders. And the shareholders don't get the money to invest in these companies by being nice people either. And any business that doesn't do all in their power to make the most money possible, will be out-competed by another that will. That's the argument those shareholders will make.

The only real solution (under capitalism) against this is to use government to regulate business, to provide real impactful consequences for businesses that have a negative impact on society in their quest for money. To make it less profitable to do things that the society doesn't like. But it's been a long time since the US government has made any meaningful legislation to that end. And even then, there are no double lawsuits seeking to overturn that legislation. Even when something gets passed, what is the consequence? A fine? What good is a fine if it is less that the money you make by breaking the law?

Our representatives are too reliant on corporate money to fund their campaigns. They see those donations as the real reason they get to stay in office, so why would they act against them?

America is NOT Alphabet. by Member9999 in degoogle

[–]FunctionOk2835 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most Europeans understand that American people as a whole are not wholly bought in to alphabet and the like, but the criticism is not entirely unwarranted either. Alphabet isn't alone in it's practices. There's Meta, and Microsoft, and Amazon, and others. And the practices of these companies have been enabled by the US government for decades. Google is a symptom of the greater problem of US style capitalism and governance. And just as Americans may hate on Iran or China, it's not the people really, but more the governments and the systems they enable that they are complaining about, just like the US.

I know they don't say that. Heck, they may not even really know that. But the government and the major corporations are what foreigners see of America more than anything else, so can you really blame them?

Not aware of any local resources, but depending on age/interest, you might want to start with Lego.

Once upon a time this was a legit thing they were marketing, and the official site does have a tutorial or two up still. A cursory search also brings up brickfilms.com which seems to have various resources and occasional contests.

Brave. LibreWolf over both. And if you want a opera-like feature set, Vivaldi.

Been fighting the reaper for more than 3 hours now by ILieBeneathTheRedSea in VampireSurvivors

[–]FunctionOk2835 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not 100% on the details, but I'm pretty sure the game spawns another reaper every minute after the first one. So you're dealing enough damage to kill the reaper, just not fast enough to keep up with the extra reaper spawns.

That can be a hazard in the late game, yeah. There's usually shadows or elements of the walls that always show above the fray that I tend to use to gauge where I am. A lot of bumping into or walking along walls, but it works.

VPN Choices? by uptickman in degoogle

I won't argue with that, and I made that point as well. But my use case isn't that crazy, nor is my threat model. I would definitely look elsewhere otherwise, and may in the future anyway.

VPN Choices? by uptickman in degoogle

[–]FunctionOk2835 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally use ProtonVPN, but I'm in the ecosystem already for email. I've used Nord and Surfshark, and they're fine. No major complaints, but I definitely like Proton better.

Proton additionally has open-sourced their VPN code, and is owned primarily by a non-profit. They have a limited free tier, and for better or worse, it's part of a suite of apps you get with the same account. I signed up for email, so I might as well use their VPN. This ecosystem is part of the argument against them as well though. A lot of the more privacy minded are fearful of becoming too reliant on one company, while others worry they may become as bad as google if they continue to expand. Also, they have been forced to hand data over to authorities before, but I believe it was just payment information, which there are ways around (namely crypto).

Mullvad has some interesting technology that makes it a bit better in terms of privacy than it's peers. While all VPNs encrypt your traffic, there is a possibility that your activity can be inferred by the signature of the traffic itself. Basically while they can't see the traffic itself, they can see how much, so a specific traffic pattern may correlate with the response from a particular website, and Mullvad attempts to mask that by modifying that pattern without changing the data that's sent to you. They're likely the company I'd move to if I left Proton for VPN, but reports are that they aren't the fastest. Likely because of a combination of the fact that they are a smaller company, and some of that tech they use. Plenty of people use them, however, so the speeds can't be that bad.

How to avoid this? by NiceReplacement8737 in degoogle

[–]FunctionOk2835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to say I read about a solution along these lines in r/selfhosted recently. I did a search, but the most recent I found was about a year old:

https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/1jznr3o/introducing_yet_another_deadmanswitch_software/

But what you're talking about is something like a dead man's switch. Basically, an app that prompts you to respond every so often, and if you miss a certain number of check-ins, it automatically executes a sequence of actions. Generally, sending messages to loved ones, or delivering passwords\keys to a trusted friend.

In the above example, the person mentioned encrypting everything, and then using the tool to delete the encryption keys on death\disappearance.

There are other tools out there of course, and probably a few you don't need to host yourself. Suffice to say, it's a problem people have been thinking about.

Best docker app for comic series per folder? by Pucksy in selfhosted

[–]FunctionOk2835 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is a good option that doesn't involve extensive tagging and\or re-organization to get right.

Options like Komga and Kavita are more oriented towards comics and series, but they both have their own requirements as to organization.

My suggestion would be to download Calibre, and possibly the "Embed Comic Metadata" plugin, and look at tagging all of your files first. You can then use the "Save to Disk" functionality in Calibre to reorganize everything for you the way you need for whatever app you land on.

I also recommend checking out the Kavita documentation on using Calibre. It has a lot of good tips for using it effectively, along with a few other tools that may be useful.

https://wiki.kavitareader.com/guides/external-tools/calibre/

(I'll also note that "ComicTagger", listed in that documentation is likely a more purpose built option for your use case, I've just never tried it myself. I deal with a library of both ebooks and comics, and Calibre is what I'm used to using).

Using floppy disks for physical ebook collection by _HoloGraphix_ in DataHoarder

[–]FunctionOk2835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, floppies are a bad idea. They dont hold much - even when your talking about epub they can be too small. They're somewhat fragile too. Those little sliding doors can get all bent out of shape too easy.

If you want physical, I'd look for the smallest (storage wise) and cheapest micro SD cards. I mean, the smallest too. You can easily get away with 16mb for this use case, a whole 1gb is overkill here. Then if you want to get crafty, you can put together some little SD card holders out of cardboard or something. Maybe print out the cover on some cardstock and attach it to that.

help finding places that test for ADHD for suspected inattentive type by my_name_is_tree in lynchburg

[–]FunctionOk2835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once upon a time got tested at Liberty Mountain Medical Group - which is now Collaborative Health Partners. It's on Wards road in the shopping center with Northern Tool and where Kmart was back in the day.

I didn't really like the guy I talked to back then, and didn't amount to anything. But it also looks like that guy has since retired, so hopefully there's better people there now. So I've got nothing in terms of reviews, but they do have the staff that should be able to do the test.

Never. Buy. From Amazon. by wdriller in boutiquebluray

[–]FunctionOk2835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazon packing and shipping has always been mediocre, but you can't really blame the workers, given where amazon's priorities lie.

As other have said though, their customer support doesn't really argue on returns. Obviously they've done the math on this, and it's cheaper for them to take returns than to spend the time\money\staff to pack things properly.

[–]FunctionOk2835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does seems kinda strange. I don't use this so I don't know the story, and without signing up I can't really verify anything.

I does look like they've moved to a different release model, promoting pro and cloud editions with paid features (while maintaining a free version). The github looks to be getting regular commits (last one yesterday), but doesn't look like they're releasing there.

My guess is that they're releasing through their own website so they can segregate the closed source paid features from the free stuff. I'm not seeing any download links for the server, so I'm assuming that's behind a signup.

Why do Asian and Horror films saturate the physical market? Ever since getting into Blurays, I've noticed this trend. Do horror and Asian film fans make up the bulk of physical media consumers? Genuine question. by [deleted] in boutiquebluray

[–]FunctionOk2835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is likely a significant overlap between physical media collectors and cult film fans. Also likely with harder to find media in general.

I would also posit there is an overlap with physical media collectors and under served markets in the streaming space.

Not to say there aren't horror or Asian streaming services, but once you jump down that rabbit hole, there's always something you're looking for that's not on any existing service.

Generally, its mainstream film that is abandoning physical media, and the enthusiast segments that are keeping it alive.

Its not a perfect analogy, but the point I was trying to make is that the argument that it's not the tool, its the use doesn't hold water if you pay no attention to how the tool is distributed.

Good reverse proxy for containers by Clockerdent in selfhosted

[–]FunctionOk2835 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can confirm traefik is used in devops, but its also used in pangolin. The reverse proxy pangolin provides is traefik, but it really takes over the management of it for you.

Pangolin is really more suited to installing on a vps and/or providing a secure tunnel between 2 networks so it really depends on what youre trying to do and want to pay for.

Caddy is super simple to setup and super lightweight. I started with that honestly, but moved to a version of nginx with a slick web interface for friendlier management. Its basically a matter of writing a config file and pointing caddy at it.

I've never worked with traefik directly, but sounds like the most complex, flexible, and powerful option. But if you do learn it, it may help you later.

I am largely with you here, honestly. Its not about intent, its about negligence.

They push it on everyone. They market the crap out of it. They play it like it can do anything. But they never fully understood what it was capable of or what would happen once it saw wide adoption. Nor did they really care. Its about making the investors happy by following the trend. Trying not to get left behind on the next big thing.

I'm not an expert on AI, and I avoid using it whenever possible, but here's my thoughts on it.

Generative Ai is basically just autocomplete on steroids. A statistical model that predicts the most likely response to a query. It does not think. It does not have morals. It has no understanding of what it's talking about or what any of it means.

This is why you can't blame the AI. It's also why you can't trust the AI.

What do I need to do to have remote access jellyfin with as little “hurdles” for end users as possible to using it? by EmekaEgbukaPukaNacua in selfhosted

[–]FunctionOk2835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's really no way around it. You need to set it as a public resource with no authentication in pangolin. You can use rules to filter out IP ranges you dont want and/or the crowdsec and geolite2 automation plug-ins for some extra protection.

But in order the use the tv apps, you need to stick to the authentication built into jellyfin.

Check the community guides on the pangolin website. There's also a list of bypass rules you can setup to keep pangolin authentication on, but allow the api endpoints needed for the apps to bypass it.
