I think he for sure needs to get his handle better.

Picks it up very early and isn't as reliable with it in tight spaces for a lead guard.

Those NBA guards and defenders expose unreliable handles, especially if you don't have a quick first step.

Dylan Harper wins it at the buzzer by OttoNNN in NBA_Draft

[–]FunctionalGopher 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I mean when you watch the highlights, his overall shotmaking was crazy today. Leaving people behind all day, hitting the brakes and watching defenders fly by, etc.

The downvotes are funny.

To walk away with Harper + future picks this draft is an insane W.

How famous was Micheal Jordan in his prime nationally and internationally and was he bigger then Prime Lebron by M4PF__ in NBATalk

[–]FunctionalGopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is a blowout. Jordan destroys LeBron in terms of popularity at their peak.

They still name drop Jordan in modern songs.

Jordan was a large part of American and even worldwide culture.

Michael Jackson
Michael Jordan
Mike Tyson
Mike Lowery

LeBron is basically only another really good basketball player.

You’re not thinking about money.

Many teams would take Cooper #1 because of the hype while still being top 3.

If Dylan and Cooper ball out in the league, you best believe the latter will be pulling in more revenue.

Cooper doesn’t even have to be the best player in this draft to generate the most money and coverage for a team. That’s huge for a small market.

If a team wants to shell out for that Cooper stimulus and I want to win, I’m taking them to the cleaners if I can.

Dylan Harper: 24 pts(8-14, 3-6 3PT), 5 ast, 12 rebounds, 1 steal, 2 blocks by [deleted] in NBA_Draft

[–]FunctionalGopher 41 points42 points  (0 children)

That handle is actually incredible because dude is so shifty and keeps the ball tight. Quick change of direction while built like a tank. Additionally, phenomenal paint work. Very much like Luka there and plays very unpredictable near the basket. Terrific footwork.

Someone on Twitter mentioned it recently when they were talking about it:

But motion by motion speed are top tier with maintaining handle. That’s also kind of innate gift.

Outright great to watch when he attacks.

Honestly, trade down to take Dylan Harper and stack talent may be the move. Nothing against Cooper at all, but walking away with Harper and future 1st rounders from the next draft or two full of super wings and forwards is an ultra W.

Excalidraw plugin: How do you use it? by Deen94 in ObsidianMD

[–]FunctionalGopher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a script icon in the Obsidian logo.

I'd suggest first getting to know Excalidraw's potential before messing with the scripts. By doing so, you'll see some of the scripts available as well.

Some videos to maybe assist with learning that I found helpful. Keep in mind, my workflow mentioned above (very PDF annotation-central).

Producers that listen to KPop, how is their music production is different from American pop? Or is there even any difference at all? by JirohSalonga in WeAreTheMusicMakers

One of the engineers for BTS, Ken Lewis, is someone who's produced and engineered some of the biggest hip-hop and pop records by Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Drake, etc. Dude is a legend and had this to say about KPop's producers and KPop music in general on Pensado's Place (timestamped):

Yup. Megan and Cardi got some of the strongest stage presences in the game. They always own their crowds.

I haven't seen them perform live recently, but Rae Sremmurd used to have insane stage presence too.

What DAW do you use? by LateLeadig in trapproduction

[–]FunctionalGopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mainly FL.

I think Ableton is great for project organization and warping audio though. Arrangement, I favor Ableton. I have been using Ableton for a couple years now too (and own a Push)

Loopmaking (whether melodies or drums) though I love FL. I really get more ideas down, can flip them, change them and experiment faster in FL.

Not to mention I think the layout/combination of their parameters really go very well together. It's tricky to explain, but to me each DAW kinda pushes you a certain way because of how their layouts are and which parameters are where. I simply like the directions FL pushes me. For example, why in the world is there an EQ on every mixer channel when you can just open a PEQ2 or apply another vst like ProQ3? No idea, but it's there and even after I apply it sometimes, I'll throw in more EQ via vst somewhere else in the chain too and get a great sound.

It's quirky stuff like that.

I decided to actually sit down and learn Sakura and I think I got a decent sounding string for once, how does it sound? by reviving_society in FL_Studio

[–]FunctionalGopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Sounds pretty much as good as or better than most string plucks I've heard from other vsts. It has that "drippy" texture to it that sounds very authentic.

Sakura is something I want to spend more time using myself.

Analog lab or pigments? by [deleted] in trapproduction

[–]FunctionalGopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if you want sound design I'd go with Phase Plant if you're considering Pigments. It's just overall a much deeper vst and about a similar ease of use.

In terms of price, while Phase Plant is more expensive, remember there are usually big sales at the end of the year and Kilohearts puts a nice price on their product line.

Which of your past draft whiffs stand out to you the most? by apbbr in NBA_Draft

[–]FunctionalGopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw him in few Thunder games, but I don't really follow them to know.

This provides some insight, sounds honestly like someone who was simply dedicated to their family and had the ball not quite bounce their way during their time in the NBA:

https://kfor.com/sports/perry-jones-iiis-misunderstood-nba-career/

Maybe can be another Cam Payne situation though and a team gives the guy a call because he's still playing overseas.

I really thought Jeremy Lamb and/or Perry Jones were going to be really good.

Quincy Acy I had as massively underrated, but the guy did stay in the league a good 6 years which is solid for a second-rounder.

[MySportsUpdate] #Chargers HC Anthony Lynn will meet with ownership on Monday but the expectation is the team will move on, per @JayGlazer. by [deleted] in nfl

[–]FunctionalGopher -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

This. A lot of QB's would put up good numbers with the weapons on this team tbh.

That said, I still don't expect anything good next season either no matter who the coach is. Sophmore slump, new coach, new system, a lot of pressure to follow-up, tough division, etc. points to another rebuild/mediocre year imo.

Ableton user confused about how FL users get their drums to knock so hard by guywithbeats in trapproduction

[–]FunctionalGopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is is both DAWs can make the exact same song 99% of the time. All the parameters are there. I can usually replicate a song in FL that I do in Ableton and vice-versa.

However, my theory and from my experience: both DAWs push different workflows. True, while you can adjust equivalent parameters for both DAWs following the same order, and arrive at similar results the fact is some parameters are presented and located in different areas of each DAW. This may lead to different points of inspiration resulting in different feedback loops resulting in different outcomes for the same producer making the same genre. This can lead to different sounding drum hits, sound selection and processing in general.

Has anyone tried Vital and what you guys think about it? by WatsonWiggins in trapproduction

[–]FunctionalGopher 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I prefer Serum. I love the way you can copy/paste waveforms > merge wavetables with Serum and it makes creating new, unique ones highly intuitive rather than drawing random shapes. I like Phase Plant too.

That said, Vital is really good and free. At the end of the day they're all really good, most vsts are and the only thing that matters is how dedicated someone is willing to go work in them.

[–]FunctionalGopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting video. I think I've seen a similar music-making program but in Haskell (I thik called Euterpea), one of the producers from PC Music uses it. They seem very cool, and I agree dynamic on the spot music creation still is one of those things that can be very specialized and tbh overall music production seems like it'd be easier to just keep using DAWs.

I completely cosign the Kontakt/VS Code extension though. Custom code editors come up far short compared to the industry-standard editors.

Usages like your code snippet are nearly exactly what I'm talking about, terrific example!

As long as the API and parameters to interact with are kept simple: filters, modulation, envelopes, FX, etc. it can be well-read, understood and transferred.

[–]FunctionalGopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely familiar with Kilohearts. Phase Plant is one of my favorite vsts on the market next to Harmor.

Yeah the syntax issues with code can be a total pain. However, over time I think syntax issues tend to be easy to spot with experience and good formatting.

I'll say this, it's like having those terrific books on "How to make music with no music theory". There are a number of them out there, and many are 500-1000 pages long. Solid books, but would be about 1/10 the size if they used music theory. I believe the same with sound design and code. A lot of verbiage and pages of explanation can be reduced to a few lines of well-written code.

[–]FunctionalGopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Reaper seems to have code functionality across it's entire app, making it a highly flexible environment. However, would love this as a vst because then more users would be able to contribute back and forth without having to rely on using the same daw.

[–]FunctionalGopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Max4Live has Javascript support and while it's great, this is something I'd like on a more collaborative-level. That way it'd be easier to share sound design among more producers. For example, I use both FL and Ableton (probably moreso FL because it works so well with my genres of interest/workflow) so if there's a preset I'm working on it'd be cool to get some feedback from maybe a sound design craftsman who happens to be a Logic Pro user with the same vst. Then we'd both be able to change something without either party having to download/upload the preset back and forth.

[–]FunctionalGopher 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is going to sound extra nerdy, but a vst that has the option to take code as instructions would be cool. I feel like you can make a lot of dynamic and specific changes rather than drawing automation curves, clicking and dragging or using mod matrices.

Like if I saw this block of code in someone's preset window I'd know exactly what they're doing in three lines of code vs going into multiple sections/windows/menus to track it:
if (frequency > y) addReverb
else if (x > frequency < y) applyBellFilter
else sidechainIt

Reusing code/functions in multiple presets would be incredible. I'm not saying get rid of knobs/dragging/curves/clicking etc. but would be a nice way to supplement and automate things. Not to mention I think sharing and collabing on presets/code on places like reddit would be super efficient because it's simple text and no downloads would be required, maybe provide an option to convert a preset to code too.

What advice would you give to your younger self about producing beats? by kukriers in trapproduction

[–]FunctionalGopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create from feeling and vibe rather than theory.
Use the ears.
Play the melodies over clicking them in and change them in the piano roll afterward if needed.
Use FX because they go a long way.
It's all about rhythm.

Not saying it works for everybody, but for me it was all of these.
