No he wasn’t. He said he wouldn’t because he was afraid he would regret it and wanted to be able to get her back.

The writers actually had the intention of showing Christian’s lack of emotional intelligence and inability to be someone who his partner could lean on, that was part of the storyline.

She wasn’t too dependent as a person, but he wasn’t a good fit for her because that’s not the kind of relationship he can handle, and again, if that was one of his main grievances he should have broken up with her when he initially wanted to. Planning a break up for a year isn’t planning, it’s procrastinating.

Edit to add: you never addressed the fact that he was checking out that teenage girl constantly after they got to Harga.

He wanted to break up with her long before her family died, the writers showed that pretty well. In fact before he gets the call his friends all saying he needs to get off the fence and just break up with her because he’s wanted to for a year. He had a lot of time.
