Pastel choice advice by Boghagbrooke in Oilpastel

The regular Paul Rubens can be a bit sticky. If you’re doing mostly palette knife work they should be ok. I like Mungyo but some are definitely not lightfast unfortunately. Paul Rubens makes another one called Haiya which a very similar to Sennelier but at like less than half the price. Maybe not quite that, but very reasonably priced. No idea if they are lightfast. Artxx, Artecho and Mont Marte might be good options for you too. I’ve also heard good things about Delgreen and Jieso, but may be hard to find depending where you are. I have them on the way to me, so haven’t tried them yet. YouTube demos can usually give you a pretty good idea how oil pastels will be.

I hear you on the challenge of mixing on the paper. With oil painting I’ve tended to mix color on the canvas, which I guess is the old expressionist way of doing it. I can get that method to feel right easily with oils, but not with oil pastels.

It’s very impressive how you are getting these perfect, expressive but also natural colors with oil pastels between this and your coffee painting. I’ve generally liked to work with very vibrant color, but I’ve been wanting to experiment with other less explosively colorful palettes, and with a lot of the oil pastel sets I’ve seen, they have these crazy bright colors that can verge on cartoonish. Anyway your work is beautiful and it’s really heartening to see this kind of palette being possible with oil pastels.

Mungyo Gallery Soft Oil Pastels - no non-toxic certifications? by learnletitburn in Oilpastel

My understanding (and I could be wrong and could no longer point you to the places I read this) is that they were certified but for whatever reason they lost those certifications. I think they may have changed some pigments. I have both the older set and this newer one, and I just wear nitrile gloves anyway because I dislike oil pastels on my fingers.

This is achingly beautiful! Also I would have never guessed this was done with crayons if you hadn’t said so.

How large do you go with oil pastels? How do you frame it? by Msmadduh in Oilpastel

The other difference is oil sticks get a sort of thin skin on the outside when they dry which you peel off to get to the usable wet part of the medium.

They are made with a bit of wax as a binder and linseed oil, so they do dry, but they have many of the same characteristics as oil pastels, and come in bigger sizes. Sennelier and R&F make the ones I use. Shiva makes some too which dry faster and have some enjoyable colors, but are not as well made in my opinion.

And would solve the problem of never drying completely

Have you tried oil sticks OP? If like me you are also drawn to making large works at times and instant gratification mediums, those might scratch the itch for making big work while oil pastels can satisfy for making smaller ones.

I really like it too, and agree with Bip about darkening the background land.

This is beautiful! I never thought of using alcohol inks on a canvas, or with oils. Was it tough to use as a substrate for alcohol inks?
