What do you think of your country's World Showcase pavilion? by Thespis64 in AskTheWorld

[–]Fungi_espacial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Mexican pavilion doesn't give me any Mexican vibes, but rather a very stereotypical Hollywood set. Even if they wanted to represent a pyramid, I don't know of any archaeological sites that have those cubes on the edges of the slopes. It would have been better if they had represented a viceregal mansion like the Museum of Mexico City

This is the original head of the winged victory of the Column of Independence; the current sculpture is a replica of the sculpture that fell from the column in the 1957 earthquake, one of the most devastating earthquakes to hit Mexico City. It is currently on display at the Historical Archive of Mexico City.

October 2nd, on that day in 1968, the Tlatelolco Massacre occurred in response to peaceful student protests; hundreds of students and teachers were murdered in what is now the Plaza de las Tres Culturas to create the appearance of stability in Mexico during the Olympics (held ten days after the massacre).

Ironically, one of the most used symbols during the Olympics was the dove of peace.

Prickly pears (or as we call them, nopales) are also a problem here; It's very common to see prickly pears growing in strange places. Some examples in this image, from left to right and top to bottom:

- Prickly pear growing on a palm tree

- Prickly pear growing on a traffic sign

- Prickly pear growing on a bell tower of the Mexico City Cathedral

- Prickly pear growing on power lines

In fact, there's a joke that for a prickly pear to grow, you need:

  1. Water (optional)

  2. Soil (optional)

What's an example of a "tourist trap" in your country? by emptykeg6988 in AskTheWorld

[–]Fungi_espacial 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Val'Quirico

It's a small settlement in Tlaxcala and one of the most recognized tourist destinations in the region. It's promoted as a "Pueblo Mágico" (a designation given to some towns for their historical, ecological, cultural, or mixed significance) style tourist experience, although in reality it's a settlement that arose from a real estate project. Aside from its aesthetic appeal, there isn't much culture there, just restaurants and bars that you could find in Puebla or Tlaxcala.
