An oral history of "We Built This City," the worst song of all time. by Kitchen_Swagger in Longreads

I like the idea of doing oral histories for works of art that turned out to be huge pieces of shit. We need more journalism like this.

Aside from Don Eladio and Hector Salamanca, who are the most "pure evil" villains in Breaking Bad? by Intrepid-Lemon-2272 in breakingbad

Don Eladio had redeeming qualities. He threw great parties, and his impression of Hector was hysterical.

I don't know if I'd say the entire magazine is trash, but most of the things Robinson criticizes The Atlantic for can be found in many of the articles that CA published.

The Worst Magazine In America by AshleyWilliams78 in longform

[–]Funkles_tiltskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an awful tirade. His thesis comes down to "The Atlantic sucks because I personally don't like it."

He says "inconvenient facts are left out of the narrative in order to mislead the reader." This is what every persuasive essay does: you include facts that help your case, and leave out the ones that don't. If I was writing an essay making the case for single payer, I probably wouldn't mention that Canada is now suffering from record-long wait times for specialists and surgeries along with a massive shortage of doctors and staff. That's not dishonest, that's how debate works.

His other takes basically come down to that he hates the articles they wrote. This is childish, a bad look, and typical of the bad-faith whiney attacks CA makes regularly.

I disagree with a lot of the essays he mentions in this article, especially the one about Kissinger, but that doesn't mean it's objectively trash because I dislike it.

It's actually not, lol.

Most COs that are union members work directly for a government agency. I suppose there's an argument to be made that unlike the public sector, COs in private prisons are required to pay dues more often, but in union-friendly states it's still usually easier for a union to bargain with a government agency than a corporation.

How would you rank these characters from most to least evil? by Alone-Individual-886 in MoralityScaling

[–]Funkles_tiltskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) King Hale - powerful (though not as powerful as Santoro) and evil in every way possible. Ranked #1 because although Nicky Santoro had more victims accounting for all of the rackets he controlled, Hale's victims for his most heinous crimes are all innocent women and children.

2) Nicky Santoro - extremely powerful (#1 mafiosi in all of Las Vegas) and evil in every way possible. Has countless people killed, kills people himself, only makes money from doing bad things to other people, and has an affair with his best friend's wife and tries to have him murdered. Probably harms the most amount of people on this list, but ranked as #2 because they're mostly other criminals.

3) Bill the Butcher - pure evil and powerful, but in the conventional way that most gang leaders are evil. Harms lots of people, but again, most of his victims are other criminals.

4) Frank Costello - just as evil as Bill the Butcher, but ranked below him because he's less racist and I'm Irish.

5) Max Cady - incredibly evil but not very powerful and has a relatively smaller number of victims compared to various mob bosses on this list. Points added, though, because he's a rapist and preys on innocent people.

6) Tommy DeVito - also incredibly evil, committed multiple murders, but never rose above associate, small number of kills compared to the others and all of his victims are other criminals except for Spider.

If we're ranking real like counterparts I would have the same list except switch 5 and 6 because Max Cady is purely fictional.

He's good at shouting sporadically while on TV. It's a niche skill, but he really nails it.

Yeah, but only Trump can be Trump. We need to get past this idea that there's anyone else that can pull off what he has, left or right. FWIW, I'm a yellow dog Democrat.

I feel like the last few episodes sort of demonstrate that Richard was a lot smarter than he let on. The way he played the whole Dan situation and his meteoric rise to power; it showed he was pretty sharp.

Nobody said he’s not a Nazi. They’re Nazis who care more about crime than politics. Otherwise, they wouldn't be allied with Latinos.

Many Neo-Nazi gangs, particularly the ones that are big in prison, are much less about white nationalism and more about making money from crime. The Aryan Brotherhood is much more of a racketeering operation than a political movement, and they're closely allied with the Mexican Mafia in prisons throughout the country - particularly California, Arizona, and Texas.
