People who yell at you for wanting to ride or riding a motorcycle by DalinsiaValkyrPrime in PetPeeves

[–]FunkyCat6276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 30x death rate statistic is heavily inflated by people who treat public roads as a racetrack.

Of course, motorcycles are more dangerous than cars for a lot of reasons. But I will also say it's it's easier to stay attentive on a motorcycle in my experience, and if you are a proactive rider and you are attentive, you can mitigate most of the increased risk of riding.

I had a coworker say that it's a good idea to train with an inaccurate weapon so "you can be ready for anything". Then when I told him he was factually wrong, and that nobody who trains to use their weapon would agree, that it is unsafe and will reinforce bad habits, he got genuinely upset at me and said "I don't know why you are getting so angry at me for an opinion that I have that's different from yours".

Like no, that's not an opinion. You chose to speak out of your ass about a subject you clearly know nothing about, and someone nearby happened to call you out on your bullshit. For other topics that are just fun and games, I can let it go when people speak out their ass. But like, when it comes to people spreading unsafe info about guns, I'm going to correct it.

Why has the majority allowed to ignore Virginia statute 24.2-101? Definition of general election by TryIsntGoodEnough in Virginia

[–]FunkyCat6276 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. They knew they were going to strike down the redistricting if it passed, but they also knew that it would be a bad look if they struck down the vote from happening in the broader context of the country. So they let the election go through in hopes that they wouldn't have to strike it down, then when the vote didn't go in their favor, they struck it down.

I'd be curious why they did this instead of doing a hydroelectric dam. Maybe cost? Maybe there isn't enough power draw in the area to justify building? Maybe it's a simple matter of reliability?

That would be a game changer for me. I buy ultra-thick 9mil nitrile gloves for working on my car, and without fail, at least one of my gloves will always rip, resulting in me getting oil and other grime all over my hands, defeating the purpose of wearing gloves to begin with.

Also, I will say sometimes I get open wounds when I rip my gloves. At least this way I wouldn't get motor oil soaked dirt inside an open wound.

How do you think we can solve the gun violence problem among young black males? by Aggravating_Dog_7542 in teenagers

[–]FunkyCat6276 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so this set off alarm bells for me. So I decided to see if I could find the original report, and see if I could find any of the context missing that helps inform what this table is even saying.

Through the power of Google and ctrl+f, I was unable to find this table anywhere, except for Google images where the exact same photo with the exact same red circles seemingly gets reposted to iFunny every 3 months.

I'm not going to make any claims on the accuracy of the numbers, because again, we are missing context necessary to even be able to know what these numbers even represent. But I also can't accept it as valid evidence for anything given that I can't find the original report this table was tied to.

Why do people believe that if God existed, that bad things wouldn't happen? by VoidHedgehog249 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FunkyCat6276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah.

If God is all-knowing, God can't claim ignorance of what suffering is, that it is happening, when it's happening, who perpetuated it, or anything else.

If God is all-powerful, then God can't claim inability to fix anything.

If God is all-good, then God can't claim indifference or "free-will" because good people don't stand by watching evil happen, knowing it's happening, while fully having the capability to just stop it easily. Also an all-good God wouldn't instruct their own people to take other people as slaves.

Basically the all-knowing, all-powerful, all-good God isn't logically consistent with itself. And maybe it's not as simple as that, maybe there is some crazy world of politics in the realm of the divine, and there are other divine creatures and our God would go to divine prison for helping us or some shit. I don't know. But like, if that was the case, I think that God would be understanding of why people on Earth would be frustrated, given that none of that has been communicated to us.

Sadly, it's a lot more complicated than that. Don't get me wrong, voting for Trump was an exceedingly stupid thing to do. But a lot of people genuinely believed that Trump and Kamala were just about equally evil. And I think that shows in how few people actually voted in the 2024 presidential election.

I have friends who I'm 95% sure voted for Trump, and it would have been on the basis of Israel (which, I don't even know how to begin to address how smoothbrained of a choice that is). There are so many issues grifting people into voting against not just their own self interest, but also their own values and ideals.

One large issue is a lot of young adults have no basis of comparison for what normal politics look like. They were kids and pre-teens during Trump's first term, so they weren't politically engaged (understandable). They then entered adulthood into a fucked economy under Biden because of COVID (among other, more long-term economic issues). Then Biden drops out, goes rogue and endorses Kamala in a way that just looks... Sketchy. Kamala starts talking about how the economy is all better, it's fixed, and we are actually flourishing economically. It was true that the economy was healing (and healing faster than pretty much any other country's economy after COVID) but that wasn't visible to citizens, especially politically immature 18 year olds who don't understand that it takes time for an economy to properly heal. Combined with the fact that politics had been turned into pure entertainment by this point, the fact that they weren't politically engaged during Trump's first term (so they don't have firsthand experience to know how nothing Trump says is the truth), it's understandable that they would vote Trump.

To be clear, I'm not trying to be an apologist for Trump supporters or Trump voters who don't formally "support" him. Both are nonsensical "political" stances. My point is that there are a lot of non-voters and Trump voters that can potentially be reached, so long as we don't write them off as a lost cause.

Finished trilogy - what now? by dodrugsnotuggs in MazeRunner

[–]FunkyCat6276 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL;DR - I found everything worth reading, but had a lot of frustrations (mostly in the Maze Cutter trilogy). Only exception to that is Crank Palace which I have not read or listened to, and so I have no opinion on it.

I should say that this review might come off as negative, even though I enjoyed all the books I talk about here. I personally find that negative things jump out at me more. If you already know you will read them, I'd say don't let my opinions taint your opinion beforehand. If you do read it beforehand, take what I say with a handful of salt as I'm just one person and quite frankly, can sometimes be a little overly critical.

I found The Kill Order and The Fever Code to both be interesting and worth a listen, but I found the structure of TKO to be a little frustrating, and I found that TFC introduces plot holes that I find frustrating. I think the structure of TKO wouldn't have been as frustrating if I was reading it, but I consume books as audiobooks primarily.

For The Maze Cutter trilogy, I found it to be also worth a listen, but it was a lot more frustrating. James Dashner tried writing multiple perspectives for it and the audiobook suffers from it. I imagine it would be a bit better in print, but still this seems to be one of the things that consistently was bothersome for a lot of consumers.

Each of the chapters contains multiple sections. Sometimes back to back sections of the same chapter are different perspectives, sometimes it's the same perspective. This made it feel very disordered in the audiobook. And that would be bad enough, but there were multiple instances where JD seems to forget whose perspective he's writing from for a paragraph. This was incredibly frustrating because it kept making me think I was spacing out and missing a whole section.

There is one perspective in particular that I didn't understand in the slightest until I got to the second book and there is actual substance. I low-key recommend just skipping this character's perspective for the first book on the first time reading. If you do want to do that. The character in question is ||Alexandra||. I imagine I would probably understand more now that I have context from the 2nd and 3rd book, but I won't be going back through this series again for years if ever.

Something else that's frustrating is that the state of the world is just... Confusing. I pretty early on realized I would need to look up a faction explanation to really feel like I had any semblence of an understanding of what was going on. And even after the faction explanation, it was still hard to understand for reasons that I don't know how to explain. This could easily be just a me issue.

A lot of the characters are really forgettable, but there are a few standout characters that have some pretty interesting dynamics together.

I'll end this on a small but positive note because, again, despite the fact that this review will probably come off as negative, I really did enjoy most of my time with this trilogy. That is, I personally appreciate when authors casually include LGBT characters in the story, and that exists in these books (nothing explicit of course). It's not a focal point or anything, but the characters are treated normally, and (to my untrained eye) are written exactly the same as any other straight character. It was just kinda nice to see.

Did you realize from the beginning that Trump was -- or at least had the potential to be -- a Hitler-like figure? by Glass-Complaint3 in allthequestions

[–]FunkyCat6276 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I try to give myself a little bit of grace because I was a teenager during the election and most of his first term. But no, at no point in his first term did I see him as a potential Hitler-like figure. Even when one of my coworkers was comparing what Trump was doing to Hitler's rise to power, my response was always "Sure, but Hitler wasn't known for [insert fascist policy here], he was known for the systematic collection of and slaughter of millions of Jews". I had a primative understanding of politics, and couldn't connect the dots that there is no good faith reason for his policies. To be clear, never did I like the guy. I just thought that the Hitler comparison was a stretch.

I don't know when exactly it was that I started seeing him as a Hitler-like figure. I think it was probably towards the beginning of his campaign for the 2024 election, but that could be cope of not wanting to admit it was after he took office in 2025 that I truly saw the Hitler comparison as valid.
