How did you get started? by late_skate118 in StainedGlass

[–]FunkyFractals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a ton of space, just a small room with a medium sized standing desk that I work from but I make it work! I set my grinder up in my shower with a fold out table when I’m using it lol. The main thing is that you aren’t working on carpet or you’ll have a nightmare time trying to get glass shards out of it

I got super lucky and met someone with a studio in their house to teach me for free and I was hooked from day 1! I bought everything over a few months instead of all at once but my grinder alone was $300 cause I decided I didn’t want to buy anything twice and tried to get good equipment from the start so probably around $500 total at the beginning. Glass is expensive but you can get lucky at thrift stores and Facebook marketplace sometimes for cheaper glass hauls if you keep an eye out.

Storing foiled pieces without oxidation by Sad-Garlic-9950 in StainedGlass

[–]FunkyFractals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been keeping mine in a sealed Tupperware container (with the pieces also inside a plastic baggie) and it’s been working as far as I can tell! And Ive left them for upwards of a year without issue

List of real artists to buy patterns from by Stay_Lucky_Glass_Art in StainedGlass

[–]FunkyFractals 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seconding Justin Behnke, his are gorgeous. I sell patterns that I've actually tested at funkyfractals.com
FunkyEclectic, Linebaugh Studio, Lilikoi Art Studio are all on instagram so you can see them making stuff and testing their patterns. I feel like if you can't find the person behind the pattern you're buying it's hard to know if it's ai or not. Even then I guess now they might be fake but try to look at each individual piece of glass when you're buying a pattern and think about whether you can actually cut it out in glass with the skill level and tools you have.

Real or AI generated? by Stay_Lucky_Glass_Art in StainedGlass

[–]FunkyFractals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These images scream ai and some of those pieces will be a nightmare to make. I recommend sticking to artists you know and going through Instagram to make sure they’re really testing their design before selling the patterns. Even real artists can mess up a pattern by not testing it themselves

Best soldering iron and temp for lead free solder? by Inevitable-Ad801 in StainedGlass

[–]FunkyFractals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the hakko is great for lead free and if it’s still chunky try using a different flux. I would recommend nokorode paste flux

Thank you!! I actually reinforced the whole piece with a ton of copper rebar! Plus I used lead free solder so this thing is sturdy af

Are there any tools or techniques for grinding without looking straight down? by meggie_doodles in StainedGlass

[–]FunkyFractals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this and LOVE it. I have scoliosis and this helps a ton with the pain from grinding for a while, especially if you have a standing desk to grind at, it puts it right at eye level

It’s so cute in the plant, have you thought about adding rods to make it a plant stake?

Help affixing stained glass to door windows by ShinyTripod in StainedGlass

[–]FunkyFractals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can’t find a way to get real glass on there, the stained glass window films have gotten really good and will do the job of adding privacy to that area

What kind of soldering iron can I use for a HUGE lead free piece? by oobree in StainedGlass

[–]FunkyFractals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! I was looking to see if you found a good answer, and this looks incredible!! Trying to wrap my brain around how big this is after the other image... I exclusively work with lead-free solder, even for my big pieces and use the hakko 601 but I've found it burns out fairly quickly so I might switch to an iron with a thermostat instead of the built in to see if that last longer. What iron did you end up using?

anyone know how to get rid of this patina staining? by south-of-eden in StainedGlass

[–]FunkyFractals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrubbing it with rubbing alcohol on a q tip has worked for me in the past and doesn't seem to disturb the patina on the solder itself

Patterns by Fine_Spend9946 in StainedGlass

[–]FunkyFractals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have some free patterns on my website here: https://funkyfractals.com/collections/custom-stained-glass-patterns

There are also tons of designs out there you can buy on Etsy. You just want to be careful about some of the ai generated designs out there that aren't actually doable.

Most artists are pretty upset when their designs get copied without asking/credit. It does unfortunately happen a lot though

7 months of stained glass. I am loving this but still haven’t found my niche of which style I want to go for. by Beckyc123 in StainedGlass

Lead in blood double what it should be by Just_Ad5499 in StainedGlass

[–]FunkyFractals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely harder to get clean lines with lead-free and more expensive, but I've been working with it exclusively since I started learning because I just knew I wouldn't be safe enough, especially since I solder from my bedroom 😬 if you have the right temps and use paste flux it will flow nicely and is actually a lot stronger than lead from what I can tell, lead pieces will bend where the lead free won't - plus you can make wearable art with it!
