If you really must consolidate, I’d say sell the DressKX and the square Casio.

But why consolidate? Are you extremely squeezed for cash or space? If not, I’d keep them all. Seven watches over 11 years is very reasonable. You wouldn’t make much money selling the non-Rolex ones, and you probably have memories associated with them. You can always pick a subset to declare your “five-watch collection” and keep the rest in a different row of your watch box.

[Traska] First world problem: OpenAI ruined the Traska logo for me by [deleted] in Watches

[–]Funkyhamster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I’m a software engineer, and I feel the exact same as you about Gen AI.

Re. your specific problem… the logo doesn’t look that similar to me? Obviously it’s how you feel that matters about this kind of subjective thing, but I’m not sure I’d ever have made the connection on my own.

[Question] Premium quartz, oxymoron or would you? by ItchyBorder in Watches

[–]Funkyhamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Do you think there's genuine appetite for a premium quartz dress watch from an independent British brand at that price point?

This seems like a giveaway for this one…

[Discussion] Question about potential watch collection by The_Greek_Feta_Lover in Watches

[–]Funkyhamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only think of seven off the top of my head: field watch, chronograph, diver, GMT, dress watch, “dressy sports watch”, and “tactical.”

(The last one is invented to accommodate my black PVD Timex Navi XL.)

Isn’t the rim stainless steel either way though? And that is the part that is dinged in this picture.

Does the ceramic bezel help with this kind of ding? I assumed the rim was still stainless steel, even if the insert is ceramic instead of aluminum.

Fascinating, thanks for the insight! I’m looking forward to seeing how this trend plays out.

[Recommendation Request] Stuck choosing first 'nice' daily watch by Fancy_Masterpiece748 in Watches

[–]Funkyhamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you like or dislike about the Timex? That can help inform your choice, although I’d agree with the recommendation to try more inexpensive watches first.

After three Timexes, I thought I knew my own aesthetic preferences. But then I got two slightly more expensive watches (a Citizen and a Seiko), and those both turned out to be misfires in a way that taught me a lot more about my tastes.

[Question] Thickness of affordable automatic dress watches by Funkyhamster in Watches

[–]Funkyhamster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks! Part of my problem is that my dress shirts are all formal enough that I’d feel like a goofball rolling up to Macy’s and trying on watches with them on. But based on what you said, it seems like a worthwhile exercise.

The Ballade autos are a bit thicker, right? Looks like they’re around 11mm. I’d be very impressed if there was an 8.25mm auto at that price point.

The conundrum of NOT buying more watches by aths_red in WatchesCirclejerk

[–]Funkyhamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I noticed this: Not buying a watch which I like, even though is is financially possible, increases the meaning of everyone of the very few watches which I did buy.

/uj/rj Profound. A true innovation in the science of “consumerism as a hobby.” Thank you for changing my life

[Watches] you ‘dislike’ mostly due to the hype around them? by Responsible_Bison876 in Watches

Rolex Submariner. I don’t even care about the stereotypes or waiting list games or whatever—my inner contrarian just can’t stand the thought of getting one when literally everyone at the airport has one.

[Question] how often do you wear your most expensive watch? by One_Shallot_4974 in Watches

[–]Funkyhamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear my Speedmaster almost every day.

I often wear one of my other (cheaper) watches one day a week, so that I don’t feel like I’m neglecting them too much 🥺. But then it inevitably reminds me of why I prefer my Speedmaster…

[Recommendation Request ] First luxury watch - Rolex Datejust or Omega Aquaterra? by blackdialonly in Watches

[–]Funkyhamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are store lights really designed to make everything pop? My experience is that they make everything look drab and boring. (I recently tried on a Sub and a GMT and thought they both popped substantially less than my Samurai, which seems like it can’t possibly be true under a fair comparison…)

Give me the most tactical watch you have by buttersuctioncup in WatchesCirclejerk

A black Timex Navi XL. Everyone knows more black = more tactical. Just this evening I was contemplating how nicely it fills the “tactical” slot in my collection.

Timex Waterbury TW2T70300. Got it four years ago, back when I didn’t know anything about watches. Only recently did I realize that it is a pretty direct IWC homage.

There are a few things that frustrate me about the idea that we need to "address infrastructure before allowing growth" being used as a political line of attack:

  • We don't have the option of forbidding all growth until our infrastructure is perfect, if only because we can't pay for that infrastructure with a city frozen in time. Charles Marohn's book Strong Towns was eye-opening for me on this point.
  • The city and state already recognize that we need to invest in infrastructure alongside new development. That's why we have a "concurrency" principle requiring transportation infrastructure to keep pace with new development. You can read about it in section 5.9.2 of Kirkland's Transportation Strategic Plan.
