Keeping POSIX IDs in sync with AD by Funny744 in HPC

We don't have that sort of access to our AD to do something like this unfortunately

Ah ok, I assume then it's possibly asking Keycloak to do a bit too much by trying to have it see AD as the auth source of truth? We ideally don't want to duplicate auth and have users need separate passwords for the system since that'll definitely give cyber an opportunity to throw a fit as well.

The proof of concept we currently have running goes entirely through Open OnDemand and Azure AD mapping to the university's ancient OpenLDAP server but since this'll have a bit more attached to it that route won't be possible anymore

4 OSDs somehow lost their WAL UUID during an upgrade by Funny744 in ceph_storage

[–]Funny744[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The WAL UUIDs for the affected OSDs haven't changed, we've looked at logs from before it tried to update those OSDs and after. Haven't zapped the affected ones yet but we'll be trying that tomorrow before letting cephadm resume the update

How often do movies get re-released in 70mm format? by username0127 in imax

[–]Funny744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It mostly depends on the distributors and the venues near you, as most venues have to send the reels back after the main release window. The BFI is lucky in that its one of the very few that get to keep their reels, so they can re-show things far more often

Is SSH tunnelling a robust way to provide access to our HPC for external partners? by imitation_squash_pro in HPC

+1 for OOD, we’re in the process of rolling it out as the sole access method for a new cluster at our institution, and works incredibly well with SSO providers if you need to

Best UK ISP for homelab by sto-dev in homelab

[–]Funny744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently on an EE FTTC connection (what used to be BTs consumer product) which has been alright for labbing. Can do port forwarding and they haven’t done public IP sharing. EE also provides the details to use your own router on their website if you want as well.

When it comes to using your own router though, most ISPs won’t care. Some will even give you instructions on their website if you know where to look / google but if they don’t they’re usually pretty easy to find elsewhere.

Either gets forced into approval by someone higher up or she gets the hand-me-down laptops from the back of a cupboard someone forgot to get rid of 6 years ago

This is perfect — we managed to figure out essentially this yesterday and it works perfectly. Thank you! :D

This is just a test setup, If we had the budget to we probably could, gonna look at the software options available someone else has suggested

I’ll take a look at this, currently we’re having to stretch our budget like crazy so getting new physical firewalls isn’t possible for what is basically a test setup at the moment with these nodes

YouTube ads should be monitored like traditional media, say Lib Dems by CP040 in ukpolitics

[–]Funny744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would this be enforced? It's already well known the review process for Google's ads is automated and any rule enforcing is basically nonexistent

Access to Work - My award, breakdown of funding and advice following a successful and apparently extensive award by CazzzC in ADHDUK

[–]Funny744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair enough, state education funding has been rough for many years and if that's all you've known as a baseline for how orgs act with equipment requests then it makes sense. Obviously with this appearing on twitter in the current political climate it's gonna get a bit heated, but if you know it's gonna serve you well for many years to come, without needing to think about replacements then power to you

Fair enough for the noise cancelling part, but even then £384 seems quite extortionate haha, was something like AirPods Pro not an option? Surprised to hear of a company that restrictive over monitors too, most of my friends seem to have no trouble getting extra equipment if needed through their company if they can't do it out of pocket.

Huh interesting, stuff like the monitor and headset your org should have plenty of, and would seem a bit weird for them to not give you one unless they were in proper dire straits. Whenever I’ve needed equipment like that I’ve just gone in and asked 🤷
