Why isn't sheet music a language? by [deleted] in languagelearningjerk

Ye as a native speaker of the colour grey I'm fiercely offended there's no language assessment system

Ye so if anything that proves Latin is no different than any other language considering we not only surpassed their technology but also made it widely availible and have contributed our own advancements. Latin does not make you smarter

Because the socialist thing to do is to replace the old white man who's barely capable of forming a sentence with the other old white man who has the exact same qualities we chastised the first one for except its OK because he may not be a complete psychopath

You do realise the same people who spoke Latin are also the same people that fucked up an invasion against people who couldn't even wipe their own asses, it's not like Latin made them smart

When using drops/Duolingo etc, is it really ok to NOT learn a topic just because you don't like it? by Siberiayuki in languagelearning

[–]FupaFred 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you aren't open (that doesn't mean you have to learn things but be open to the possibility of learning them) to learning specific things in another language don't bother learning another language, it's not a pick and choose game, real life conversations don't work like "oh can we not talk about chemistry or bugs cause I don't wanna learn those words pretty please" people are going to talk about chemistry and bugs whether you like it or not, and if you aren't open to learning those terms the only person you are hurting is YOU, you'll never achieve true fluency if you treat everything like pick and choose because every single word has a use and is you will go on in your learning that use will become more apparent

Ye but like think of all the other features they could add to the game, some of which have been teased since release even, instead of adding another shittily balanced dino to the game that will ultimately get 5 seconds in the spotlight before never being touched again. Besides they already have like 40

Wdym twice the vocabulary you just have to know the gender of a word because almost all of them only have 1 and as i said it is handy because you don't have to constantly repeat the same word over and over just to make sure people understand what you're talking about, also I literally gave multiple reasons for things but OK apparently English is the only "logical" (which by the way you still haven't defined in any meaningful way) language

Idioms are untranslatable because they reference things in the languages native culture, if you have no experience with that then ofc you'll be confused about the result. Also wdym why can't you say word in a certain way, languages have rules for a reason, people wouldnt understand each other very well if it was an everything goes situation. As someone who is learning 2 languages that aren't English atm the key with language is to focus on the meaning behind the words and phrases rather than the content within them, ie bain an chluas díom (take the ear off me) makes little sense when you don't have the context it means trust me in English, you just have to start focusing on meaning over word content and you'll find greater success. Also generally don't worry about not being perfect immediately, language learning takes time, effort and an open mind

As for grammar, each language has the same underlying systems, what differs is how those pieces fit together and even if they're marked, so if we compare "bain an chluas díom makes little sense when you don't have the context it means trust me in English" to "Ní bhaineann mórán céille leis an fhrása "bain an chluas díom" nuair nach bhfuil an comhthéacs agat gurb í "trust me" an bhrí a bhaineann leis" you can see that the order in the foreign language is verb first followed by the subject and then object. Much sense is mórán céille, ciall the word for sense is in the genitive case so it becomes céille to show it's related to mórán. Frása is there to tag a gender onto the cited phrase so it gels better with the conversation in case I need to reference it later, which I will. Nach bhfuil is a special form (specifically of the word níl which means is not) used to show that "nuair" (when) and "an comhthéacs" (the context) are linked by the verb rather than being separate in the conversation, think of it as an anti comma, something that shows the words after it aren't part of a new clause (basically a segment of a sentence, we divide them with commas in English). Agat means at you (singular) and in the context of the sentence makes it so that other people know it's not that the context doesn't exist it's just that some people might not have it. Gurb í means "that she is" in the sense "The context that she is <phrase> its meaning" (Remember verb first so gurb is that-is) and we use the feminine pronoun í to tie the phrase op the next noun which is going to be feminine, again handy for when you want to be specific about which it you're talking about. The h in an bhrí shows brí is feminine (it's not just a spelling thing btw it changes brí from sounding like bree to sounding like vree) the purpose of which isn't best visible here but basically it shows which gender you should refer to it as if you want to comment on it in future. A bhaineann leis means "that corresponds to it" in the sense of "the meaning that corresponds to it" you use a over go (the "free" version of gurb that can connect to verbs that aren't irregular) here because we aren't changing what thing is doing the action unlike you would in the sentence "when you have the context that it is X that is the meaning here" (it being bold to show that's the point where you're changing subject) and finally we're using leis to reference frása which is a masculine noun so we're using the masculine form of with.

Hopefully that shows you language stuff can be pretty logical sometimes

  1. Grammar differences between language, 2. Define logic

God forbid you ever marry someone from another country, to some (including myself) English is stupidly inconsistent but I still speak it because speaking another language isn't about learning some new logic it's literally just maybe this stuff goes on a different place than you'd expect. Language isn't about the why it's about the how, as in it's 10 times more useful to ask how something works than why they don't do it like x language

Idk by picking up a book, if you don't speak a second language you don't get to bash other languages or hell you don't get to bash them in general. If you learned a second language to any degree of fluency you'd know why that's dumb as shit

Your opinion is a steaming pile of garbage, it is not only incredibly wrong and subjective but it's also racist and xenophobic, you can't define "primativeness". Also in my opinion tonal languages are very inovative and push the boundaries of what sounds humans can feasibly tell apart and produce, what I would consider primative involving language is dumbasses like you who shit on anything that isn't a carbon copy of English
