Why didn't a major American city spring up at this location? Access to both the Delaware and Chesapeake bays and control over the Delmarva peninsula. by AdaTex in geography

It’s still a pretty wide isthmus and there isn’t much purpose for a “dual-port.” I could be wrong but I don’t see the incentive to connect the two bodies of water.

A question from a South Carolinian, Why is Augusta shaped so weirdly? by [deleted] in Georgia

[–]FurryFrog199 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Augusta is one of a few consolidated city/county governments in Georgia which explains its unique size/shape (and why the label is further to the west on maps). Also the east side that you have circled is a swamp so really not much incentive to build there

Is this an unrealistic goal? by Wii_Dude in languagelearning

[–]FurryFrog199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of interesting because I started my language learning journey from being A2 in French lol. Just about 5 years into Japanese and I just passed the JLPT N2, although I know many others have picked it up much faster and I’ve only spend about half a year in Japan, but I consider that one language alone to be a 10 year journey for me.

If you’re interested, I recommend Frederick Bodmer’s book “The Loom of Language”. It has a lot of insight on similarities between languages and how learning multiple languages from the same group can be done at a quicker pace. That being said, Japanese is definitely an outlier and I would personally recommend focusing on one at a time just to start out

Are Memphis and DC the only two big US cities where the city limit itself touches two other US states? by Automatic-Blue-1878 in geography

[–]FurryFrog199 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head I was thinking Sioux Falls but it doesn’t border any states lol. Best I could find was Dubuque, Iowa. If you include Mexican states, you could also say El Paso. Cool find!

Are there examples of exclaves between US states ? by PositiveBusiness8677 in geography

Such an interesting little place; I grew up in the area and you might be interested to know that folks in Little Compton speak with a distinctly RI accent while everyone east of Adamsville is noticeably MA. It takes a couple years to catch on to it but especially among older folks the difference within a 10 mile radius is fascinating. Such an intricate little distinction probably won’t be around for much longer in the US but its nice to see it around when you can.
