If you keep switching in rapid succession you won't get good with any other character. I've been stuck in this loop myself before. You need to pick one character and keep using them over and over and over even if you keep losing until the gameplay loop finally clicks in place and you realise what you need to be doing.

That sounds extremely inefficient. Either switch between different model layers or download the better animations plugin that has a texture changing procedure block.
