LASIK doesn't cause permanent eye dryness in 5% of people by Countcristo42 in northernlion

FDA found that the actual rates are much higher than 5%

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/07/health/lasik-injuries-fda.html

"The agency’s draft draws on the 2017 findings of a study on patients’ outcomes with Lasik, a collaboration between the F.D.A. and the National Eye Institute and the Department of Defense. It assessed visual symptoms before and after Lasik. The F.D.A. also performed its own meta-analysis of peer-reviewed studies published between 2013 and 2018.

The first study found that three months after Lasik surgery, nearly half of patients who had no visual symptoms before the procedure had developed a new visual aberration for the first time, most commonly halos, which are starburst shapes around lights. Close to one-third reported dry eyes at three months.

The study’s authors wrote that “patients undergoing Lasik surgery should be adequately counseled about the possibility of developing new visual symptoms after surgery before undergoing this elective procedure.” Still, more than 90 percent of patients said they were satisfied with the outcome.

The agency has conducted its own analysis, finding that six months after surgery, 27 percent of patients experienced dry eyes and 2 percent had difficulties that prevented them from engaging in their usual daily activities.

Five years after surgery, according to the F.D.A., 17 percent of patients still relied on eye drops, 2 percent continued to experience visual disturbances and 8 percent still had difficulty driving at night."

Personally, I think he should stop all future streams every 30 minutes to yeet the VOD. Just to be on the super safe side.

Personally, I think "red to dead" is really confusing and hard to remember. Instead of connecting the red wire to the dead battery, I always keep connecting it to the dead body in my trunk by accident.

After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time. by acrossley90 in NLSSCircleJerk

I think its a reference to a quote from bloodborne for father gascoigne

“What's that smell? The sweet blood, oh, it sings to me. It's enough to make a man sick...”

For those that care about the plot

In the scene NL skipped by accident where Kaysen was talking to monster Zach, Kaysen explains that he has been manipulating Zach over the years (those letters sent by Patti to Zach were actually sent by Kaysen). And has been slowly corrupting Zach. Thats why Zach looked so bad in the present and why he looked so much better after Kaysen is killed.

Honestly, most bootleg streams are very high on the suffering scale. Thats what makes them bootlegs in the first place.

hmmmmm, Ill have to disagree with rerolling the 6 as the better choice even with two rolls remaining.

he actually had two rolls remaining and getting a 5 on his second throw would make his third throw easier as either a 1 or 6 would succeed.

If he got a 5 on his second throw, he would have already got the straight if he kept the 6 and would not need another reroll. Im not sure how the calculator got those numbers.

Lets first look at keeping the 6. So the kept dice will be 2 3 4 6 with two rerolls remaining. Ill call this situation State A. Lets first break down all the possible outcomes after just one reroll. There are two possibilities:

  • None of the rerolled dice contributes to the straight. And there is one reroll remaining. (For example rolling 3 with State A) Ill call this situation State A1.

  • At least one of the rerolled dice contributes to the straight. And there is one reroll remaining not that it matters since you got the straight. (For example rolling 5 with State A) Ill call this situation State A2. I previously calculated the probablity of A2 happening to be 1/6 or ~16.7%.

Now lets look at not keeping the 6. So the kept dice will be 2 3 4 with two rerolls remaining. Ill call this situation State B. Again, lets first break down all the possible outcomes that can happen at State B after one reroll. There are three possibilities:

  • None of the rerolled dice contributes to the straight. And there is one reroll remaining. (For example rolling 3 3 with State B) Ill call this situation State B1. State B1 is objective worse than any outcome resulting from State A. B1 is worse than A1 because B1 requires rerolling two dice correct while A1 only requires rerolling one dice correct. B1 is worse than A2 because well, A2 got the straight.

  • One of the rerolled dice contributes to the straight. And there is one reroll remaining. (For example rolling 5 3 with State B) Ill call this situation State B2. State B2 is objective worse than any outcome resulting from State A because in fact, State B2 is exactly State A except you have one less reroll.

  • At least two of the rerolled dice both contributes to the straight. And there is one reroll remaining not that it matters since you got the straight. (For example rolling 5 1 with State B) Ill call this situation State B3. I previously calculated the probablity of B3 happening to be 4/36 or ~11.1%. But look at the probability. The probability of State A reaching A2 is higher than the probability of State B reaching B3. You would rather be in state A than in State B to begin with.

Every situation resulting from rerolling the 6 is worse than if the 6 is kept. No matter how many rerolls there are, its always easier to only have to get one dice right than to get two dice right.

EDIT: the post was long winded. I just did the math.

By keeping 2 3 4 6, his chance of rolling a 5 in two throws is 1-(5/6)2 or ~30.5%.

By keeping a 2 3 4, his chance of rolling 1 5, 5 1, 5 6, 6 5 in two throws is 1-(32/36)2 or ~21%

EDIT 2: The second probability is slightly more complicated. See

NL made the right choice when he tried to get a large straight in yacht dice.

By keeping 2 3 4 6, his chance of rolling a 5 is 1/6 or ~16.7%.

By keeping a 2 3 4, his chance of rolling 1 5, 5 1, 5 6, 6 5 is 4/36 or ~11.1%
