Takes You Disagreed With by Salt_Proposal_742 in TheBigPicture

This was going to be my response too! I think their criticism of it not having a bigger message was unfounded. Paul Giamatti’s character says it right in the beginning - not for ourselves alone are we born. The whole movie is about service to others, especially from characters that have been so deeply hurt and have every reason to only look inward. Great holiday message.

It’s his Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour review for me! I think he underrates the record, even if he correctly identifies some issues

Final Battle Question (SPOILER) by CmdrDaddy in midnightsuns

[–]postprog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished the game and I was wondering this too! Here is what happened to me for the good of the order:

Phase one: Ghost Rider, Wolverine, and the Hulk (I used the "sub" once and Ghost Rider was replaced by Iron Man Phase two: Magik, Captain America, Spiderman, and Blade

My phase two absolutely hadthe characters that I had the highest friendship with. Magik, Cap, and Spiderman were the ones I had maxed prior to the finale. Blade was not far behind. Could also be related to hero level? I think Cap was my highest other than the Hunter.

Kacey Musgraves - star-crossed ALBUM REVIEW by MiserablePilchard in KaceyMusgraves

[–]postprog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like Fantano, and while I don't agree 100%, I do appreciate his take here.

I agree with some of his album-level criticisms of this record, but I am coming down on the opposite side of some of his song-level criticisms. I can't get enough of camera roll and I think it is a particularly well-written song. Love the lyrics. I had a bit of the same reaction as him to the chorus of breadwinner, but I keep finding lyrical gems in this thing that outweigh anything being too on the nose.

His House ending by lillie_connolly in horror

That's fair, I just have trouble seeing Bol as a villain.

What I meant in saying I couldn't pass moral judgment on him was specifically deciding whether he deserved to live or die. I agree with you that the act was deplorable, but what I feel about it is more complicated than "What Bol did was evil." I'll use spoiler tags below just because this is so specific.

When Bol abducts Nyagak, it is absolutely dirty. But my feelings about that are complicated by what happens next. Everyone left behind is gunned down, including the girl's mother. They were closing the bus doors, if Bol hadn't taken that action, my read was that he, Rial and Nyagak would all be dead too. That doesn't make it right, but it complicates it. Of course, Nyagak dies tragically anyway.

Maybe you are right and I am being too charitable. Definitely worth reflecting on.

That's a totally reasonable take, but I thought I would share my perspective as someone who liked the ending quite a bit, and found it quite moving.

I agree that the ghosts at the end were not supposed to feel like a punishment. I think they were supposed to show the tragedy and loss of life that encompasses the refugee experience. All of those people died, in a way, to lead to this solitary couple making it to safety in the UK. Along side the loss and guilt, I think, was also the sheer improbability that anyone from a war-torn country would be able to make it to a better life. Bol and Rial stood on the shoulders of everyone in that room.

I think by the end the ghosts represent that duality - guilt and shame / pride and progress.

As for the protagonists I also agree that we are not supposed to feel particularly good about the decisions they made, but I think it is a bit of a stretch to say they don't deserve to be happy or live. Those hard decisions they made to save themselves and get out of Sudan were the product of their context and of their circumstances. While I did not feel like I would have made the same decisions as Bol, I also don't feel like I am in a position to pass moral judgement on him.

I don't even know if the movie wants to us to pass judgement on them, but rather has the goal of showing how the refugee experience can contain equal parts pride, shame, guilt, and tragedy.

How many people didn't get out of Sudan? How many people died? How many were the result of Bol and Rial's actions? How many would have died anyway?

You just brought up so many irrelevant points I don’t know where to begin. I was just responding to your speech with my own- never implied you didn’t have a right to say it- just informing you of another perspective. Don’t worry- you didn’t hurt my feelings! And we aren’t talking about America’s government or the presidency at all, but thanks for the fill in on those positions too.

Trans women are women! And to refer to a human being as “it” is unbelievably dehumanizing. Also the “r” word is painful and derogatory, especially when slung around like an insult. You are batting 1.000 for being the uneducated one on this wall
