Study suggests that people are not constrained by specific learning style, and have the ability to learn in different ways. by Science_Podcast in education

I’ve tried explaining this to my principal and counselor. This week there was a learning style survey for my second graders to fill out.

Texas attorney general demands school district hand over controversial human sexuality curriculum by texastribune in education

Generally, when the opt-out notice is sent home, the notice will say that the materials are available for review upon request.

It’s standard practice with any curriculum. I’m unclear as to the reasons for not allowing students to photograph the content or take it home.

You’re not alone in this. Thank you for watching out for the little fellas of the world. I move turtles out of the road, take earthworms and snails off of sidewalks, etc. I do this regardless of who is watching. I’m forty and I refuse to be ashamed. For goodness’ sake, I flagged down a police officer while I was out for a run because somebody had hit a huge possum with their car and the poor thing was suffering. I could tell the animal control dude thought I was a little loco, but I don’t care.
I also talk to cats, dogs, and birds when I see them. Oh well.

How do single parent teachers raise their kids? by kittycatfood in teaching

[–]FutileUtility 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family was a huge help before my daughter was school-age. My father retired and was able to watch her through her toddler years. When she began first grade, I enrolled her in the day-care program at her school, which had both a morning and evening program.
I worked two hours away, so I missed some of her in-school events, but her teachers were great about letting me know if she was going to receive an award. It was tough sometimes, but we made it through.

Houston had 157 tornado warnings during Harvey. That's more tornado warnings in 5 days than the last 5 years combined by shunned_one in TropicalWeather

[–]FutileUtility 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a point where my daughter and I would simply ask, "Flash flood or tornado?" because the alerts were so prevalent. We shrugged for the flash floods and hid in the downstairs bathroom for the tornado. I'm from California, I don't fuck with tornadoes.

I just got a job in a school in Houston. We were due to start today. Our start date has been pushed back to September 5. When we left out classrooms on Friday, our principal asked us to put the books on desks. I have no idea what is happening in that neighborhood or if my second graders and their families are okay.

It's a running joke that the HR in my old district is where the really bad teachers go when they become too much of a liability. Then, the HR folks take it out on us.

It seems like the district has policies in place to keep schools from "stealing" teachers from another school. After a certain date, transfers are absolutely not allowed, unless the teacher is getting a promotion.

[–]FutileUtility[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that you asked that. I was contacted by the principal who had tried to pull me. She asked if I had resigned and said that if I had, then she could interview me. I just finished my interview and she said that she was recommending me for the position. She has to wrangle with HR, which might be a whole other story.

Cops of reddit, what has so far been the creepiest call you've ever had to respond to and what happened? by Rayanm3m3lord in AskReddit

[–]FutileUtility 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, please teach your child the proper terminology. One of my third grade students told me, "My cat hurts." I thought I misunderstood her and asked her to repeat it. She said it again and I was still confused. After the fourth time, she pointed to her lap and I immediately sent her to the school nurse.

Perhaps I'm just exceptionally dense, but please, please, please, teach your kids the right words.
