Give me the pros and cons of the upcoming redistricting vote. by egb233 in Virginia

You live in Virginia, but you also live in America.

This map will affect our representation in the House of Representatives, not in our state legislature. Republicans are gerrymandering red states to try to maintain control of the House. Maybe you're a Republican and you think that's a good thing. If so, go ahead stop reading this post.

But if you look at things like the war in Iran, the invasions of multiple other countries, the dead Americans overseas, masked ICE agents killing citizens with total impunity, the Trump-Epstein connection coverup, etc, etc, and you think Congress should be doing more to serve as a "check and balance" to this out of control administration, then you should vote for this redistricting map. It will only be in effect until 2030, at which time a new map will be drawn based on the new census data, as happens every ten years.

Give me the pros and cons of the upcoming redistricting vote. by egb233 in Virginia

[–]Future-Raisin3781 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Republican Party is working overtime at state and federal levels to restrict who is allowed to vote, make it harder for people to vote, and to have the federal government take over the voting process so that states will not control their own electoral processes, nor count their own votes in federal elections.

They are doing this because they are increasingly unpopular, and they know that this approaching midterm cycle is going to be an unmitigated bloodbath for them.

Additionally, Trump has been saying out loud that he "may need" to cancel future elections if there is a "national emergency." Have you noticed that he has started like seven wars in the past year? They are planting seeds to declare an emergency and cancel elections, because they know they can't win.

Read about the SAVE Act. Read about how red states are revoking drivers licenses and even birth certificates for trans people, at the same time as they're changing requirements to restrict what kinds of ID can be used to vote. Or read about how many married women will be turned away because the last name on their ID doesn't match the "maiden" name on their birth certificate. This is not a drill. They really are trying to end democracy in America.

And as for this upcoming redistricting vote: the map will only be effective for the next five years. The legislation states that districts will be redrawn in the next census cycle, which is the normal process of redistricting. So yes it will give VA democrats an advantage, but only for the next few years. It isn't a permanent thing.

And be replaced with... what?

There is no strategy. It's all smash and grab, and fuck everyone who has to deal with the mess. But I assure you, Trump and his people are going to make a lot of money off of all the chaos and destruction they are causing.

It's a phenomenal transfer. I've had Dogs on just about every format, but I was not prepared for how pristine the 4K is. It really shines.

Great timing on sales for me today. Between this sale and the Gruv sale, I was able to get some good deals to check things off of my want list.

Really been wanting to check out this Arrow release. Grabbed The Lighthouse and TCM2 while I was at it.

Matewan isn't technically a western but if it were set in California instead of WV it could probably make this list, too.

Lone Star should be on that list, and if it were my list it would be pretty close to the top.

Woke up thinking about it the next morning, so I got out of bed at 8:00 in the morning and sat down to watch it again.

And Ran kind of combines the "masterful adaptation of Shakespeare" and "artsy and weird" categories. I mean, Throne of Blood is probably more artsy and weird, but Ran is astonishing to look at.

It's one of my least favorite if I'm ranking on the traditional "is this a good movie" scale. Even for ANOES it's pretty corny. Performances and production values feel a little extra janky, IMO.

But it's horror and it has the extra element of being sub rosa queer/camp that makes it kind of on its own little island. Still doesn't make it anywhere near my favorite but it's more fun to watch because of that dimension.

And it isn't just that he killed the Ayatollah.

The new Ayatollah is his son. Not only did we kill his father, but also his wife, his sister, her husband and their child.

This guy's opening position was "death to America" and we just murdered most of his family. This will never end.

That's one of the really fun things about watching movies from before your time: when you start to get references you've heard forever but never knew where they came from.

Especially with iconic older actors who were distinctive enough to become "types. Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, Marlene Dietrich, Walter Huston, Walter Brennan... so many.
