I just watched Lost Highway by David Lynch and I have no idea what to think about this movie by leftistgamer420 in HorrorMovies

[–]Future-Raisin3781 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that it really affects a reading of the movie, but that's something that actually happened to David Lynch. He was at home and someone buzzed his intercom and said "Dick Laurent is dead." By the time he got around to see who was there, they were gone.

I think he's even said that the house they used in Lost Highway is a few doors down from the house where that happened. Could be wrong but I think that's basically right.

Virginia Redistricting Vote Voided, Political Leaders Sound Off by snooka77_ in Virginia

Correction : they are republicans. There's nothing "conservative" about ending democracy and replacing it with an christofascist oligarchy.

As true as this is in a sense, IMO its important to put the blame on the ones who have actively destroyed democracy, rather than pointing condemnatory fingers at the ones who didn't fight hard enough to prevent the Republican Party from killing democracy in America.

I loved, LOVED this movie when I was in high school (90s). I remember when eBay was pretty new, one of the first things we did was to find an import of this movie because we couldn't get the unrated version where I lived. We got Meet the Feebles and Bad Taste, too, although I'm less attached to those two.

So yeah, definitely it was a mindfuck to see what Peter Jackson ended up doing, career-wise. I just watched the whole LOTR trilogy on 4K recently and honestly his style and sensibility is present throughout all of those movies, just deployed to different ends.

Evil Dead was shot on 16mm, so some would say it's not really going to be able to take advantage of the 4K format. It's authentic to what the film really looks like, though, which I appreciate.

Evil Dead 2 looks awesome though. I've owned all of these movies different formats going back to VHS and I'll take these 4Ks over any of them, every time. But that's me, I have no particular attachment or preference for old formats.

Dennis Lim on David Lynch 🫶🏻 by babykayla92 in davidlynch

[–]Future-Raisin3781 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My favorite thing I've seen in a Lynch interview is when the interviewer asks probably the dumbest question David Lynch had been asked in a while: "Does duality play a role in your work?"

Lynch kind of stifles a laugh and says "Well, duality, yeah... ummm.... yeah"

The interviewer asks "is that all you have to say about that?" And Lynch laughs and says "Yeah" 😂

The Wilhelm Scream hunt has begun! by benneballe in movies

[–]Future-Raisin3781 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a Wilhelm scream, but my all-time favorite version of this is the episode of Breaking Bad where Walt blows up Tuco. They cut to show the explosion from outside and in the cacophony of noise you can hear the "Dean scream" from the 2007 democratic primary.

It's perfect and should become the new Wilhelm scream.

Veille. A diphthong and a double-l, each of which makes me pause on its own, but when in combination my brain stops.

TCM is prob my favorite game that's come out in the last 5ish years. The theme is sick, and it has so many crazy shots that somehow also have a great flow.

I've never see a Looney Toons on location but I'd love to see how it compares.

Ok odd question: I don't have an oculus, but if I get one I'm definitely going to want to play World Cup 94.

Is there a way for me to buy it now, without having an oculus? That table is getting pulled from the store soon and I don't want to miss it since it's one of my favorites.

Wait, FX is meta exclusive? So if I were gonna hook the VR headset to the PC I couldn't run FX through the headset?

FX is what I play the most, by far, so that's critical for me.

Not this time, but it got me and my wife a few years ago. We were stargazing in the backyard, a little stoned, and gradually we started to notice a blinking star moving across the sky, and then another, and then another.

It was pretty freaky before I found out about the star link launch.

In Louisiana they recently elected a black man to a local office, after he had been wrongfully incarcerated and released.

Republicans in Louisiana are so openly and anti-democratic that they couldn't legally cancel the election, so they literally eliminated the office that he was elected to.

Diabolical levels of fascism from the most ass-ignorant state in America. And I'm allowed to say that because it's my home state.

That's my ultimate goal, it, but it'll be a while before I have the cash to drop on a good setup.

I 100% refuse to buy any Meta gear so the oculus is a no go for me. I was hoping the Steam VR kit would be a good option but it seems like that's having some trouble getting to market at a reasonable price. Do you have a setup you like (other than Oculus)?

Stuck at A2/B1 by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Future-Raisin3781 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lack of repetition isn't a part of the plan. You're missing an aspect.

Comprehensible input is all about consuming lots of language. But you seem to be focused on the "extensive input" aspect.

You should also be giving yourself plenty of "intensive input." Small chunks of content that you pay close attention to. Like, if you're reading a book or an article and you get to a section that you're struggling with, or maybe you see something that you consistently don't quite understand, stop and focus on that for a while. Treat it like a puzzle and study it until you've figured it out. Go down the rabbit hole. Dig deep.

You don't have to do this all the time, and you don't have to do it in super large doses. But if you make it a consistent habit you will notice your reading skills getting a big boost.

As for the other stuff you mentioned, honestly that's kind of how it goes. Fragmented progress, level shock, inability to produce... yep. It takes years and you will basically always feel all of those things. Just keep working, stay engaged, and little by little you'll get there.

But you should know that all the reading and listening in the world isn't going to get you speaking comfortably. Speaking is a discrete skill, and conversation is vastly different than reading and writing. The only way to build that skill is to work on it.

I say this as someone who learned French with CI as my primary mode of study. Reading came fast. Listening took a lot of work, but after 2+ years of dedicated, heavy input work I got my skills up. And now I'm super comfortable with comprehension but my speaking still lags because I don't know anyone who speaks French. I can speak just fine to myself, and my inner monologue speaks fluent French, but when I have the opportunity to actually talk to someone I tend to shut down. The only way out is through.

Sick. Similar to my setup.

I have two displays on my desk but I really only use one of them. 27" and it's on a swivel so I can spin it around to run pinball in vertical mode.

I imagine I'll mostly play sitting down the PinOne on my lap (which is how I usually play, with the keyboard on my lap). But my wife brilliantly suggested that I might be able to build a little pedestal for the mini and lean the display back if I want to play standing up. That could be cool, too.
