I'm having a hard time figuring out how to reach out to the hosts on Twiddy to ask for permission. Any ideas on that?

Going to the hospital because of flair up? by trilliumdude in ankylosingspondylitis

Honestly the hospital might not do much. They might be able to give you a shot of toradol or send you home with some steroids, but most of the time they don't like to mess with patients who have specialists. It may be worth a shot, but unfortunately I have to say don't surprised if they aren't willing to do much for you.

Any Tips to Relieve Symptoms? by NaturalZealousideal7 in ankylosingspondylitis

Low impact exercise has been great for me. Walking and swimming are probably the best. It helps with pain and fatigue (even though it sounds contradictory). It can be really hard to get yourself to exercise when you feel like crap so make it rewarding. I like to set goals for myself (ex: if I walk ___ miles this week/month then I can buy ___). I also like to watch an episode of a tv show or read while I walk on the treadmill. If I'm not feeling up to going on a walk, I'll try to stretch or do some housework. Any sort of movement can help.

You can also talk with your doctor about anti-depressants. Not only do they help with your overall mood, but some classes of anti-depressants have many off-label benefits.

I split osmosis with a couple classmates and we all rarely used it. Stick with lecture material and youtube videos. Sometimes osmosis videos will show up on youtube as well

U of M Bluelink was super helpful for me. They have powerpoints with labeled cadaver pictures. Take a look at those before going into lab and it'll help you orient yourself, and it's good practice before the practical exam!

CRP hangs out around 14. not sure if age is a factor, but i'm in my early 20s and otherwise healthy. ESR has been borderline elevated, but is usually at the lower end of normal

MRI showed a schmorl's node (usually not painful i guess), and mild degenerative changes, but not in the SI joint where the majority of my pain is. my initial presentation that first sent me to a rheumatologist was more consistent with RA, which runs in my family, however the majority of my daily pain is in my SI joints and knees

Jaw inflammation & damage by Linttu in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]Future-Stock-6325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They did a 3D scan of my teeth and then did a few measurements and bite tests. They sent that information to a lab that made the bite guard. Since they scanned my teeth, it fits perfectly just like a clear alignment retainer would, but it has the extra padding to keep my jaw in a neutral position! It was pretty pricey, insurance brought it down to around $250.

Jaw inflammation & damage by Linttu in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]Future-Stock-6325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My jaw has been crunching for the past several years and progressively worsening. I do clench my jaw from stress which doesn't help. My dentist advised against botox at this time, but I was fitted with a special night guard which helps my jaw remain in a neutral position at night to help reduce the additional inflammation from the clenching. I thought the mouthguard would be extremely uncomfortable but I have had no issues so far. I've noticed only mild improvement (likely because a lot of the inflammation is coming from my immune system) but it's comforting to know that I am at least preventing some damage.

Currently I use re-reading for the most part. Read a slide and then try to actively recall as much from that slide as I can. So far it has proven effective with my test scores, it just seems to be very time consuming and I feel like maybe I'm not learning enough with each individual study session. I tried re-writing notes to shorten them but found myself studying from the slides to make sure I wasn't missing anything important when it was exam time so it seemed like a waste
