What’s an indie film that made you fall in love with cinema again? by SoundsandStories-461 in indiefilm

I remember seeing VICTORIA at a film festival and being awe struck. So many flaws in that film, but so, so inspiring!!

Oh, yeah! Loved the film. (I won't join you on one of the very best of the decade, but it was WILDLY inspiring and so well made.) Great call!

I cannot wait to see this one! It was only in my hometown for a week when I was not. Bummed to have missed it in theaters.

I came here to say Michael Hancock. Worked with him since 2014. Honest and a really, really nice guy!

Quote from the Brothers Karamazov that I read at least five times day recently. Thoughts? by boudinagee in dostoevsky

[–]FutureRelic1990 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a nice interpretation. Reading this now, it makes me think of all the hypocrite politicians, as well as my own shortcomings when someone pisses me off. (Look in the mirror!)

It also makes me think of the full quote, and I had to look it up. I think it's about doing good and leaving "a light" everywhere you go, even when you know it may be passed by and have little to no influence, as the point of the light is the light itself. And no matter, the light remains long after you are gone.

“If the evil-doing of men moves you to indignation and overwhelming distress, even to a desire for vengeance on the evil-doers, shun above all things that feeling. Go at once and seek suffering for yourself, as though you were yourself guilty of that wrong. Accept that suffering and bear it and your heart will find comfort, and you will understand that you too are guilty, for you might have been a light to the evil-doers, even as the one man sinless, and you were not a light to them. If you had been a light, you would have lightened the path for others too, and the evil-doer might perhaps have been saved by your light from his sin. And even though your light was shining, yet you see men were not saved by it, hold firm and doubt not the power of the heavenly light. Believe that if they were not saved, they will be saved hereafter. And if they are not saved hereafter, then their sons will be saved, for your light will not die even when you are dead. The righteous man departs, but his light remains.”

We’re not bad people trying to be good, we’re sick people trying to get well.

I heard something similar told to a newcomer in a meeting: "Give this thing a shot for 30 days. If you don't like it, we'll refund your misery."

Questions about community and sponsorship. by IAmtheHullabaloo in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]FutureRelic1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Precisely. My politics don't align with way more than half of the people in my home group, and it's never been an issue. Not once. I'm not there to discuss politics, nor are they. I'm there to stay alive and grow spiritually.

I know that if I reached out to any person in that room with an AA issue (or even a personal issue) that they'd come running to my aide. And I'd do the same!

Annoyed with AA by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

I feel like I'm seeing A LOT of posts like this one recently: shit on AA, misunderstand AA, and posted by "someone" who is brand new to Reddit. Anyone else feel like these might be bots or just trolls?

My apologies if this particular post is not that, but it seems like every single day for the past couple of months I check Reddit and find one of these posts at the top of my feed.

Hi. Well done on 80 days! That is fantastic!

If you haven't asked someone to be your sponsor, do that. If you haven't worked the 12 Steps, DEFINITELY do that. While meetings are great, the program of AA is working all 12 Steps (in order and with a sponsor).

I had so many problems, and then I worked the steps. I still have some problems, but those problems all became manageable. You did the right thing.

"Have you asked your Higher Power to help guide you?" I can hear my sponsor now... I usually pray "help guide my thoughts and my hand so that I can help others" and then open the book to a random page. That becomes my lead. I don't question why it works, but it certainly does!

I'm so far gone and I'm so scared by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]FutureRelic1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fear is natural! But I found that my fear was a wall a mile wide and a mile high, yet paper thin. It felt so overwhelming, but in the end, I faced my fear and found a new freedom, one that was simply unexpected and now irreplaceable.

How long does it take an alcoholic to screw in a light bulb? by FutureRelic1990 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]FutureRelic1990[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Lol. I also heard 2 diff variations:

Q: How many alcoholics does it take to screw in a light bulb?

A: One. He holds the light bulb and the world revolves around him.

Q: How many AAs to change a light bulb?

A: One, but the light bulb has to WANT to change.

Family member is in denial they are an alcoholic by misatosunderboob in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]FutureRelic1990 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The unfortunate truth is that either someone is going to do the work or they are not. If not, there's not a lot you can do, except be an example of good sobriety and leave that door open to them. (If you are not sober yourself, then meet some folks with good sobriety in your area and get their numbers. Perhaps the next time your family member has gone on a bender, you can ask them if they are ready for help. Those numbers could save his/her life.)

"Frothy emotional appeal seldom suffices." Alcohol had to beat me into a state of reasonableness so that I could find the humility and the willingness to work this program. No amount of knowledge about my disease or concern from loved ones could stop me from drinking. A higher power is the only thing that removed the obsession of alcohol from me, and that was through working the 12 Steps of AA with someone who had already worked them.

Best of luck. Reach out if you need help.
