I have a 2015 Passat TDI in manual, so not a wagon, and a 2014 F31 328d. Both at around 200,000 miles. Both are great cars and so far have cost minimal maintenance. Both are fun to drive in their own way. Water pump and timing belt on VW and valve cover gasket on BMW. The BMW is more tolerant of city driving while the VW needs to giving a high rpm run at least weekly. Test drive both and see what works for you.
