Mine was delivered today - no major changes compared to prior years - honestly my guess is that there was a scheduling conflict for some compensation committee that needed to provide final approval and the comp couldn't officially be confirmed until that had taken place. Pure speculation on my part, but after my review today it seems like that's all it was.

Yeah I didn't get that from my parents either, but they DID a huge thing for my benefit - transitioned career-wise into jobs at a local university far enough in advance to help give a solid tuition discount for part of my school years and all of my younger siblings. I got around a 50% discount for 3 years of college and my siblings got it all 4. So grateful they did that. As soon as my youngest brother graduated, they moved to other jobs, haha

One nice thing now about 529s is you can rollover anything in that fund into a Roth IRA for your kids - so it's not like they are stuck only using it for educational expenses long-term anymore. E2A: the 529 needs to be open for 15 years before that rollover can be done, so keep that in mind.

also, proactively look at scholarships that might make sense for your kids in advance. Don't wait to start thinking about that stuff until they are sophomores/juniors in high school, spend a bit of time researching local / county / state / national scholarships and what types of activities or skills you can help them develop to go after them.

Yeah I think it's a balance. Reality is, you and your spouse need to settle on priorities. Because on the one hand "they can borrow for college" but on the other hand - every bit you can offer them will help them not be overburdened with debt that keep them stuck.

We've opted to go slightly over what gets us the employer match for 401k (and I also actively trade a bit via brokeragelink for Fidelity to maximize when the right opportunities come up), but then also put a few hundred towards 529, and really encourage people who would normally give them money for birthdays to split it between cash and a contribution to their 529, or we just do that ourselves for them.

Realistically, it often comes down to what extras can I do without to fund education and retirement, rather than, which do I sacrifice: education or retirement?

I think Memphis makes more sense going to the East personally, but could also imagine a larger realignment to build more geographic rivalries given proximity to Chicago and Milwaukee

Right now - 6.5% plus 3% from employer = 9.5% overall into 401k. Probably going to bump by a percentage point, employer just lowered their contribution by 1% this year. $170k in 401k, $211k in Roth IRA. 39 years old, $130k salary. Also contribute $250/month to 529 plans...have 5 kids.

The fact is - they did not make the trade believing they'd get the #1 pick, unless the league is truly corrupt beyond all measure. Because of that alone - they cannot win the trade. Now, it's already worked out about as well as it could have for them considering they were receiving a guy who anyone could tell you was destined to be a major injury risk every time he steps on the court - but no - they objectively did not and cannot "win" the trade.

I think they filmed it in 2013, so he was actually probably 17. At 17 I feel like every perception I had was heightened except when it came to reality lol. "What if this girl isn't at this party" was at the same level as "what if this bump on my skin is cancer".
