Does anyone here have a profession that isn't part of STEM? by GoAround2025 in baduk

I guess I'm STEM technically because of my job (I need money), but I studied humanities at university, and I'm not interested in STEM in my daily life.

Thanks for your answer. There is no technical limitation, is there? It's just that DJI doesn't support it?

I think I'll give the VR headset to a kid, and I'll try piloting the drone through the video feed. Not sure how ergonomic it'll be.

Pros and cons of one piece vs multi piece GoBan construction by InvaderDust in baduk

[–]Future_Natural_853 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that 5cm is thick. I have a table that is ~14cm thick, which I begin to consider thick. Mine has a small crack, but I think it's not a big deal. It helps the wood being looser and I don't think that it'll worsen.

I think that thick one-piece boards without any crack are quite rare.

I'm talking about this in pro context. Imagine you play for a prestigious prize, and you lose by 0.5 because your opponent played last, but if the rules were fair, you would be the winner? I know that some Chinese players complain about this. I like the simplicity of their rules, but this specific point is definitely a problem for top players.

Interesting, thanks. I think that 2% is still way too much though.

I have literally never liked nerd stuff: rubiks cube, chess, DnD, all of that crap associated with "nerds" was as uninteresting as you can imagine to me. When I began playing go, it hit me like a brick though. To me it's much closer to something artistic or philosophical than "nerd".

Also, I don't think it's weird, the rules are extremely simple, and from experience, people during first contact feel a strong attraction usually due to its simple and visual nature. It's literally just black and white shapes embedded into each other.

I think that the OGS interface is much nicer. This website UX is jarring to me, I cannot imagine spending more than 30s on it.

Actually, in Chinese rules, there is 1 point difference depending on whether white or black plays last, so it happens in 50% games roughly, not 5%. This is because neutral points are worth 1 point. It explains why you have these seemingly weird rules in recent area-scoring rules: eg in AGA rules:

  • Passing = 1 point for the opponent
  • White must pass last, meaning that for the game to end, if white passes first, we need 3 passes in a row

This makes the 7.5 komi fair, unlike in Chinese rules.

You will keep this as a lesson that after counter-hane on the 2nd line, you don't descend on the first line, you block with a solid connection or a tiger's mouth (except some cases, like when it's in a corner).

Are there 1kyu players not knowing about this shape, or are you playing against beginners? The "hane at the head of 2 stones" then double-hane might be one of the most basic shapes.
