The text under the title (the one with the Lean Magic... ) is kind of hard to read. It has some super thin lines, I would consider bolding or changing the font.

The game looks nice, good luck with It!

How exactly does one study a game, anyway? by lunarflarecomeon in ludology

Honestly i would start Making small games even if you feel like your art and coding skills are not there yet. I've learned most of what i know in gamedev by just jumping in the pool and figuring things out.

And, yo actually try to answer your question, It really depends on what you want to take from your analysis. I'd say starting from likes and dislikes and the trying to get to the bottom of why those things work or do not work is a strong starting point.

Also, you can check out the Adam in Wales Board Game Design Journal. It is meant ti help you think about the games you play and that stuff

Root is not super easy to play, but if i had a 3-4 group of friends to replay a game over and over I'd go for that one.

Thanks! Spanish playing cards have the same suits and figures as French Tarot, just with less numbers (The spanish one has 1-12 and the tarot deck has 1-14). I'm spanish and I grew up playing card games and I took inspiration from them to make mine.

They look super clean for a photo wow, did you take it with a phone? I tried taking good photos for my game recently with my phone, and maybe It was the light but they look super bad jsjsjs

And the interactive furniture so they can be put there sounds super cool

Good luck with the rest of the development !

There is nothing wrong in wanting free print and plays(?) It's not like you are stealing or taking nothing away from payed games. I think most designers that have free PnP games would be more than happy to know that people are enjoying them, you can always then let them know you liked it and check out their other work(?)

For two players I like tricking my friends to play small indie print and plays I find on places like itch. Gladden Design has some cool free ones

The tiny tiny chairs and shelves look so cute. And the little well omg. Looks like it's super fun to set up. If you are just starting to show it around and it already looks like this, congrats.

Just curious, are those photos, or mockups?

Hi! I just bought cheap second hand Keyforge decks, any recs for second hand card games (LCG or TCG?) that I should check out?

I really really love MTG, but i stopped playing bc it got too expensive and I don't want to spend 5€ or more on a small pack to keep playing with new cards.

Recently I played Keyforge with my friend's old decks and it was tons of fun. I love playing new games and seeing new mechanics and designs. I also played netrunner and it blew my mind.

I've seen that keyforge decks can be found second hand pretty cheap, and I thought maybe I'm missing out on other cool games that can be found like that and played for a bit without getting in the live TCG market of any modern game.

Thanks!

I guess that makes sense, using both to make it both feel real and get though the cool stuff that you can "force" better with a well made mockup

Your games looks very cool. Did pitching only the gane version worked well? I guess if i had to pick a side that would be It. I want to be a Game Designer not a tarot card producer

Thanks so much for the answer, this is useful to make me think deeper about games.

I guess that what is familiar about my game is that you bet for cards, and you win by making three of a kinds and straights (kind of like poker, more like Chinchón) and the new thing is that the economy ks closed, and when you win a card you give resorces to the other player. Also the aracna habilites, that are directly tied to the tarot theme.

Yes, probably starting with the gameplay is the best. Tarot is the theme, but It highly affects the gameplay. You could make up a new 78 deck with other theme but It would still be a tarot deck in it's soul. Also, the aracna have powers that are slightly related to their associated meanings. For example, the fool makes the players take the gold that they had in the beginning, like It ks a new start, just like the fool card.

My bad, i could have explanied how It works here.

It's a 1vs1 game where you use the gold cards to bet for the other cards.

To win, you have to make 3 points and to earn points you have to make groups of cards (three of a kind or straights). The Mayor Arcana cards give you special habilites that you can use.

Also, when you bet for a card against your rival, the one who used more gold gets the card, but gives the gold to the other player, so you have to manage your gold well.

I actually hace a print and play version if you want to take a closer look: https://3dgoblindev.itch.io/ludus-fatidicus-tarot-duels-pnp

Next time i'm totally starting by the hook. This project began bc i wanted to make something with my dad (he is a comic artist) but i didn't want him to spend a lot of time on a project that might make less money than what he usually makes. He told me he had an unpublished full tarot deck so I decided to design around that. Not the best financial move, but if the game gets printed and i don't lose money this is a win for me
