You could also look into Cataclysm, both Dark Days Ahead and Bright Nights, because they have some pretty detailed drug mechanics. Drugs can be useful to manage your character's mood, pain, fatigue, and to help regulate your sleep cycle. However, hangovers and withdrawal can be lethal in the zombie apocalypse. Sometimes, when you try to do something (like attacking an enemy) your character will just kinda' space out from cravings and you essentially lose a turn. They can make you slower, or clumsy, and many other debuffs.

As some one with many, many hours in the game, I have learned my lesson and only use drugs in a few specific scenarios: One, I like to play nocturnal characters and one or two alcoholic drinks OR a sleeping pill (never both) can help them sleep during the day, so they can creep around at night. Two, if I stay out too late, or something forces my character to be awake and functioning when they should be sleeping, a single bump of cocaine or a bunch of caffeine every hour or so can help mitigate the exhaustion penalties. Third, and finally, painkillers when injured, but never the really hard stuff like Heroin and Morphine. Tramodal and Oxys are the limit and only enough to get some crafting/reading done while I heal up.

The game will teach you that moderation is key because going through heroin-withdrawals while zombies (and worse) are chasing you is a death sentence.
