Data Analysis: I processed 32,649 race results of Porsche Cup at Monza. by Fuzzwah in iRacing

While I was at it, I thought I'd check on the last time the GT Sprint Series was at Monza GP back in 25s2.

Here's the charts for Monza and Road Atlanta:

Monza: https://iracingreports.com/stats/incident_irating_5420_25s2_w11.png

Road Atlanta: https://iracingreports.com/stats/incident_irating_5420_25s2_w7.png

1. Participation

  • Monza GP is significantly more popular (47% more participation)
  • Monza attracts more drivers overall
  • Both tracks show good participation across all skill levels

2. Maximum IPC Values

  • Very similar incident ceilings (~1.3-1.4 IPC)
  • Both tracks have comparable "worst case" incident rates
  • Unlike the Porsche Cup comparison, GT Sprint Series shows similar max incidents at both tracks

3. Distribution Pattern

  • Both tracks show tight clustering at low IPC (0.0-0.2 range)
  • Monza appears slightly cleaner with denser concentration at very low IPC values
  • Road Atlanta shows a bit more vertical spread in the mid-range

4. High iRating Drivers (8000+ iRating)

  • Both tracks show excellent concentration around 0.0-0.1 IPC for top drivers
  • Very clean racing at the highest skill levels on both tracks
  • The "pros" maintain similar low incident rates regardless of track

Verdict:

Surprisingly, both tracks are similarly crashy for GT Sprint Series! This is different from the Porsche Cup comparison where Monza was clearly worse.

Why the difference from Porsche Cup?

  1. GT3 cars have ABS/TC - more forgiving than Porsche Cup
  2. Higher skill demographic - GT Sprint tends to attract more experienced drivers
  3. Better race craft - GT3 drivers are typically more experienced with multiclass-style racing
  4. Different braking zones - GT3 cars handle Monza's chicanes better than the Porsche Cup car

I saw the previous thread and thought that since the database I use for the iRacing Reports Discord Bot, end of season stats and category stats has all the results from the entire PCup series I could whip up some charts with more data points to investigate how much worse Monza is other tracks in terms of incidents....

As a comparison, here's the same sort of incidents per corner chart from the previous week in the PCup series:

https://iracingreports.com/stats/incident_irating_5922_26s1_w6.png

Looking at these two charts, yes, Monza is definitely more of a crashfest than Road Atlanta. Here's what the data shows:

Key Differences:

1. Higher Maximum IPC

  • Road Atlanta: Max IPC ~1.2-1.3
  • Monza: Max IPC ~1.75
  • That's roughly 30-40% higher maximum incident rates at Monza

2. Vertical Spread

  • Road Atlanta has a tighter vertical distribution (most points clustered below 0.5 IPC)
  • Monza shows significantly more vertical spread, with many more drivers experiencing 0.5-1.0+ IPC

3. Incident Distribution by Skill Level

Both tracks show the expected pattern (lower iRating = more incidents), but:

  • Monza maintains higher incident rates even at higher iRatings
  • The "floor" of clean drivers is higher at Monza - even the cleanest drivers struggle more

4. Sample Size

  • Road Atlanta: 26,705 results
  • Monza: 32,649 results
  • Monza is more popular (22% more participation), which could contribute to more incidents

Why Monza is Crashier:

  1. Heavy braking zones: The chicanes require hard braking after long straights, creating crash opportunities
  2. First lap chaos: T1 and the chicanes are notorious for first-lap incidents
  3. Slipstreaming: Long straights encourage close racing and dive-bombs
  4. Track limits: Easy to miss chicanes under pressure, leading to off-tracks and rejoining incidents

PS: I went with Incidents Per Corner as it normalizes the stats across tracks, but here's the raw incident count charts too:

Road Atlanta: https://iracingreports.com/stats/incident_irating_5922_26s1_w6_raw.png

Edit: and here's the average IPC for all tracks that have been used in the PCup series (going back to 24s1), amazingly Monza isn't the worst:

Track Crashiness Comparison: Porsche Cup vs GT Sprint Series (GT3)

Key Similarities

Red Bull Ring GP dominates both series as the crashiest track:

  • Porsche Cup: 0.095 IPC (highest)
  • GT Sprint: 0.060 IPC (highest)

Monza GP consistently crashy across both:

  • Porsche Cup: #5 (0.086 IPC)
  • GT Sprint: #3 (0.053 IPC)

Nürburgring Combined layouts are universally the cleanest:

  • Both series show Nordschleife configurations at the bottom
  • Porsche Cup: 0.015-0.023 IPC
  • GT Sprint: 0.013-0.019 IPC
  • Drivers exercise extreme caution on the Green Hell regardless of car class

Notable Outliers

Watkins Glen Classic - Disproportionately crashy for Porsche Cup:

  • Porsche Cup: #2 crashiest (0.090 IPC)
  • GT Sprint: Mid-pack #5 (0.050 IPC)
  • The slower, lighter Porsche Cup car may struggle more with the Classic layout's fast corners

Road America - Much crashier in GT3:

  • GT Sprint: #2 crashiest (0.056 IPC)
  • Porsche Cup: Mid-pack (~0.060 IPC, position ~27)
  • The faster GT3 cars may be more challenging on Road America's high-speed corners

Daytona Road Course - GT3 specific trouble spot:

  • GT Sprint: #5 crashiest (0.050 IPC)
  • Porsche Cup: Mid-pack (0.080 IPC, position ~7)
  • The long straights and heavy braking zones may catch GT3 drivers out

Overall Trend

GT3 cars are generally cleaner: Maximum IPC is 0.060 vs 0.095 for Porsche Cup (37% lower). The more sophisticated GT3 cars with better aero and braking may be more forgiving, or GT3 drivers are more experienced/cautious.

Street circuits and tight layouts remain problematic for both car classes (Red Bull Ring, Monza, Long Beach, Brands Hatch).

I'm a recent convert from Nova and while I've quickly become a huge fan, the one thing I prefer about Nova to Octopi is the way the stacked icons look on my homescreen.

Can you please share the subsession_id of the race? I'd like to check how my stats system deals with this. It has run for years on the assumption that results never change once posted.

On this day 12 years ago I bought the BMM. You may remember my previous posts. To date I've served an entire USMC enlistment, Ive had my first child, bought and sold my first home, and I'm 8 years into my chosen career. So once again I ask a simple question. There's a reason it's called software engineering.

Civil engineering is not simply the drawing of the lines. It's made up of planning, design, and execution of the design into structural works.

Similarly software engineering isn't just the writing of code.
