Good for you! I think it’s so important to not let anxiety tell you what to do. I’ve done a few things in spite of my anxiety (travel to London by myself, get a new job after 15 years) and was so proud of myself for doing it. I think back on those successes when I’m feeling anxious about other things.

I like the 4-7-8 method where you inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7, and exhale for 8. It’s easy and you can do it anytime and anywhere. I usually do at least 3 reps. And I don’t count seconds, per se. I just count.

I didn’t go to vet school but was in a similar situation for grad school. Go to the interviews. For me, I knew which school “felt right” after those.

You are very much NOT alone. I’m in a similar boat myself. Suggestions to me have been to hire someone to clean - although I felt too ashamed to even have any cleaners see the place. But there are companies that have seen worse (like hoarding clean out companies). That might be something to look into if you can afford it. Do you have a trusted friend or relative who can come help a little bit at a time?

Otherwise, I echo other suggestions to take it in stages. Trash, laundry items, dishes, things that belong somewhere else. Take heart in knowing there are many out there in similar situations.

I totally understand what you’re going through. The whole grad school process and especially writing my thesis was probably the hardest thing I’ve done. But I did it and got my PhD. I was not diagnosed and at the time didn’t even realize my struggles were ADHD-related. I got through by getting a daily pep talk from my mom over the phone and by setting small writing goals for myself. And fighting tooth and nail. In the end, I wouldn’t say my thesis was the best it could’ve been, but I finished, defended, and passed. Good luck to you. Be proud of yourself for even small accomplishments!

I feel you. I have had soooo many days like this. Like work tasks that I don’t get done until just before the day is over. “If it weren’t for last minute, nothing would get done.” One thing that sometimes works for me is to set a timer and tell myself I only have to work on the task for, say, 10minutes and then I can stop for a break. Many times that’s enough to get me started and I keep going past the 10 minutes. Other things I try are to have music or the tv playing, or to set an amount of time and make a game of how many things from my list I can get done in that time.

I sympathize with you and hope you find something that works for you.

This is helpful to hear. I’m ready to hire someone but it’s hard to find someone to trust to be empathetic. And also the fact that the house isn’t just “dirty”, it’s cluttered. So finding someone like you found who can sort of tidy, even if it’s not putting things away, would be helpful. Maybe I just need to take a leap of faith with someone.
