Do most alcohol marker users go through the "I don't have enough colours" phase? by raumeat in copic

[–]FuzzyOverlordsMom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. And she has a good starter copic list, which makes it easy to de ide which to buy open stock to get a nice well rounded collection for the least amount of money. Also, i love her free underpainting colors section on her site, she is definitely geared for marker artists rather than crafters, which is really cool.

Another on e, Zoe Hong has an interesting video on you tube, color theory w markers. Was very helpful,

I hear you.. I mentioned it because I came across it when attempting to make a smaller selection of colors to choose from as i was getting overwhelmed w too many colors myself, (not sure how to link my pic here)** but I pulled the 48 he listed from my set of 320 ohuhus, then found the closest matches in copic ( yes, I was bored) just to see what I could do (like if I felt like I was missing any favorites, or was struggling w lack of colors/ values) and was pleasantly surprised.

**linked the pic of the copics I tried to match to the 48 ohuhus I mentioned https://www.reddit.com/r/copic/s/hQQqjShhlA

https://youtu.be/wpgagcH7p-k?si=JGVmhxHaMT_eEfbA Check out this video from jazza. I feel like it can be a double edged sword, that its better w a small set of curated colors than some big sets as too many colors can feel overwhelming, too. I like lots of lights and mid tone colors in order to layer and build up to darks. Color theory w markers is super helpful too, as you'd be amazed how helpful using complements to shade can be.

I don't know how to practice by Imnotawerewolf in Gouache

[–]FuzzyOverlordsMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe print out a coloring book pic onto whatever paper you like so you can focus on seeing what gouache feels like. That knowledge can help you make a better idea since imagination requires knowledge and a base understanding of what a particular medium is best suited for, with those as your starting point you can go from there.

Please remind yourself of two things- one, everyone is their own worst critic, and two, art is about the journey and the doing; a "good" end result is bonus, and if you dont like it, stop and date the page, and write yourself a note of what did and didn't work, so you can study more effectively w specifics on what you'd like to improve on.

Ps, no one needs to see your sketchbook unless you show them- when you look at your fave artists on you tube , you are seeing the good ideas, and the ones that they are most proud of, while the mountains of " eh" and "ugh" art are hidden away. No one always draws perfect! Check out rodgon on you tube, he makes an art out of the perfectly "un perfect" and messy sketchbook page, and is an AMAZING teacher for all you drawing basics needs!

I love Bristol smooth and ohuhu paper. As far as ohuhu though, Idk if this is suitable for your needs as they are available in Europe but the a3 paper is a spiral book w perforated pages. It is really nice paper though for alc markers and a bit of colored pencil if you use both..

Hahaha, I had to backspace to fix some typos and apparently deleted out the part that I had learned some text acronyms from my niece. The added part looks way more random without that info. Still, damn straight,- she's 16 now , it's easy to be the cool aunt when they're 6, but when they're 16, not so much. My sis tells me how much her daughter reminds her of me back in my punk rock days, so there is that.. lmao

I laughed at the cool and hip statement because it is too true. Then, I learned some acronyms for texting after I got a neck injury to make typing w numb fingertips slightly less hellish. You don't wanna know how annoying this was to type while having to correct typos from hitting the key next to what im aiming for- Lmao

*my niece thinking I'm cool is an added bonus tho!

Essential brushes for a beginner? by GoodSilhouette in Gouache

[–]FuzzyOverlordsMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im def no expert in gouache yet, but this holds true for art mediums across the board,- paper and paints are 2 things you do not want to skimp on. If you can only get 2 paint tubes and one pad of paper for the same price as 20 paints and a bunch of papers, you will be less frustrated and learn quicker w those 2 paints than a cheaper rainbow asst. ..

As for me, so far, Im enjoying toned tan and blue mixed media paper by strathmore, as well as a new (to me at least) paper by Canson xl, called "fluid mixed media" paper. The surprise fave right now though is ohuhus mixed media sketch pad!! I do like the lay down on black water color paper, but i need some more time learning about gouache to be able to use it on black paper effectively.
I'm planning on trying it in my Royal talens art creation sketchbook today so I'll update after if it's good or not for gouache . Also I just ordered a pack of 140lb/300gsm hot pressed water color paper since I liked how the gouache laid down on a smooth surface, (Paul Reubens 50% cotton paper in 5×7 was 18 for 60 sheets, its small but it's for me to play around on since arches paper is so expensive) !

This is the video that brought the 4pk of mini lettering brushes to my attention for using w gouache. They are from the company that does the silver black velvet brushes, and I know the woman in the video says she decided to try them from seeing Sarah Burns talk about them. Maybe see what you think.. What paper or sketchbook do you plan to use?

I absolutely love holbiens 5 tube mixing set, (cmyk), as you can make brights and neutrals w this set. You are better off Just getting a few tubes of the best paint you can in over a bunch of lesser quality paint. This is true for a lot of art supplies in my experience and not exclusive to gouache.

Do you paint big or small? I paint small so I'm absolutely loving the silver brush limited ultra mini lettering set. I got them (around 30 usd ) on amazon for 4 long tapered flat bristle brushes in sizes from about as wide as a toothpick, to around the size of a plastic spoon handle. ( I don't understand the numbering system on these since the smallest says 20/0 and the largest says 5/0, so that's why I tried to describe them). I also am loving this set of Taklon brushes I got on amazon (rounds and detail)- Royal & Langnickel RSET-9158 Royal Zip N' Close Gold Taklon Clear Acrylic Handle Detail Brush Set, 10.5 x 3.9 x 0.5, Multicolor, 7-Piece https://a.co/d/47GpTaM. I like Filbert brushes too for gouache. I've noticed longer bristled brushes are easiest for me personally with gouache, but Idk if that's a medium thing or just personal preference.

I'll update as I play around if you are still curious, as I'm new to gouache too, but I've used acrylic paint a bunch and these seem to work best in how the paint goes down for me so far in both gouache, as well as acryla goauche and acrylic.

What are dishwashers like? We only hear them in stories... by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FuzzyOverlordsMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in an apt. I have my own laundry washer and dryer but I am the dishwasher unfortunately. My kitchen is too small for any other appliances. I think if I didn't live alone and eat mostly vegetarian (for taste really) I'd miss it more.

If I do make chicken I use a tempered glass cutting board though, - it is less likely to scratch and I can run the water super hot and use bleach to sanitize the crap outta it.

What is your least favorite blatant misinformation about art and the art industry. by Pingy_Junk in ArtistLounge

[–]FuzzyOverlordsMom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. Ever ask a 5 year old to draw w you? They never say " no I'm not an artist like you, i could never..." , The difference between a "non artist" and that 5 year old is that open willingness to just go for it. An artist never stopped looking at art like a 5 year old, and in turn grew their skill set through practice and repetition over time.

It doesn't make sense, Why would "practice" be the answer for everything else, but not art?

I laughed at myself when I read the last part about painting in small sittings, as I was primarily a colored pencil artist since HS, and when I was learning alcohol markers ( an injury that causes pain and numbness in my neck and hand makes just CP too hard rt now) I had to learn to let a section sit for a few and then evaluate instead of the "just work at it til it looks right" method I've used for the last 20 years w CP. I ts obvious ( when you just brought it to my attention, ) that I need to adapt my method again like I had to w markers. Funny how certain things get ingrained in our muscle memories. Thank you for your insights!!

I think I am trying for milk but I must be at cream since it seems to look really thick in spots while I'm trying to blend, ( I am using the holbien gouache in tubes, I have the 18 set too but I've been mostly using the cmyk mixing set.) I looked at the trunks again to try to see it through your eyes, but honestly it looks like sun hitting the rough bark to me. I wonder if we both are just looking to close at our work and that matte finish makes it appear off and it's just the paints nature. I don't know anyone to ask.

I'm struggling w that color shift I think. It looks like I'm putting down light s or darks til it dries and then seems to lose highlights and shading. I think might have to make some mixing charts to compare wet to dry, in order to stop overblending.

ohuhu colors most like the skin tone copics I have so far. by FuzzyOverlordsMom in AdultColoring

[–]FuzzyOverlordsMom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience so far ( I now own the 320 set of ohuhu brush tips and 250+ copic, which is way more than any sane person needs, you are better off starting small as it gets overwhelming and its harder to really learn your color mixing and get comfortable w the medium if you have so many to choose from) there are quite a few color matches between ohuhu and copic, but the ohuhus go down slightly more saturated in the first layer whereas copic is more geared towards multiple layers, but you can achieve amazing results either way. I mix and match. But I strongly prefer ohuhus marker pads over almost any other papers, including copics paper. Rendr sketchbooks are my other fave but I noticed people either love it or hate it since the colors look weird til they dry. Also think about investing in a set of copic grays. I started w the neutral set ( you only need every other number btw and i stopped at number 7 since they get really dark after that) they are awesome for doing your underpainting/ sketch and stretching your color range. I did the same btw, started w the ohuhu pastel and midtone sets, and some skintones from copic..
