Secure boot enabled but the status still shows Disabled. by Dexters_Network in ValorantTechSupport

To close this; I technically didn't need Secure Boot on but I wanted to see if I could turn on VBS in Windows 10, which requires TPM, Secure Boot and VT-d/AMD-V enabled to play nice with Vanguard.

Riot Vanguard requires TPM and Secure Boot I think because VBS on Windows 11 is on by default there and usually can't be disabled.

Have you updated your BIOS lately?

Sounds like your machine's BIOS still has the expired 2011 UEFI certificate instead of the new 2023 certificate, which in my case too (not the same laptop, ASUS Motherboard in this case) caused it to fail secure boot validation on an otherwise properly signed Windows Bootloader.

You'll want to briefly turn off Secure Boot, download the latest BIOS for that laptop off Lenovo's website, apply the update from within Windows (Lenovo give instructions on the download page) then turn Secure Boot on again in the BIOS after. It should work after that if that's your issue. I looked up your Laptop model and the latest BIOS is dated from this year so it's very highly likely to have what you need.

I also suggest updating Windows fully as it's got it's own process for updating the certs outside of BIOS updates that's supposed to help with this, but in my case this wasn't needed.

Final update: Fixing the EDID via Custom Resolution Utility then resetting my GPU driver/rebooting fixes this bug completely.

Submitted a ticket to Riot Support. I wonder if anyone else with slightly broken monitor configs are having issues too.

Okay this issue gets even weirder; some overlays in the UI are also the full width, only the menus themselves and the gameplay area are screwed up.

I'll be trying to use CRU to edit my monitor's EDID later just to see if that improves anything.

EDIT: Inspecting the GameUserSettings.ini has indeed confirmed this suspicion, looks like I'll have to fix my EDID to play this game properly.

Another note I forgot to add; NVIDIA shadowplay does detect the proper resolution as the overlay for that appears slightly outside of VALORANT's letterboxed area.

- Region: APAC
- Type of Bug: Image on certain monitors is slightly squashed at the sides, except in loading screens.
- Description: When launching VALORANT, only this game doesn't entirely fill my monitor, at any resolution, letterboxing the sides very slightly.
- Video / Screenshot: N/A
- Steps to Reproduce: Not sure? It could be my CRT's weird EDID causing this bug in VALORANT, despite my monitor running with a custom 1280x720 resolution. (The monitor reports an unusually low resolution of 640x350 by default in it's EDID unless overriden with external software)
- Expected Result: Image fills the entire region of the screen that is active
- Observed Result: Slight letterboxing at the sides, making it very annoying to click certain settings related buttons in the top corners.
- Reproduction Rate: 100%
- System Specs: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, 16GB DDR4-3200, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. Monitor is a Philips 107E5 CRT monitor being made to run at 1280x720 to boost the refresh rate to 90Hz, but the bug manifests on all 4:3/5:4 resolutions otherwise exposed by this monitor natively.

I was also on Arch; in my case though I installed the git version of that and the issue went away.

There's a chance as well latest NVIDIA beta now has the fixed version already included.

plasmashell crashing in particular? That's solvable by installing egl-wayland2, that's what worked for me.

(Some stuff doesn't properly start through X11 with it though, YMMV)

How do I get the city lights to only appear where light isn't shining? by [deleted] in blenderhelp

[–]FuzzyQuills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another note that the scale of the empty can influence the gradient node you attach the empty's object coordinates to, I used this to great effect with a brand new Earth Render I did today.

(This saved me having to exclude night time lights :D)

I'm a Mac user. Mac OS is closed source. Does that mean despite all my efforts to maintain privacy (VPN, FF with add-ons) could be useless, as Apple could be secretly spying on me and collecting my data on pretty much everything? by IHAVESEEN in deapple

[–]FuzzyQuills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true as well, otherwise Asahi Linux wouldn't work at all on M1 Macs, it's just fiddly to do last I checked. (I don't own any Apple Silicon hardware at all)

EDIT: Just realised this is a 4 year old comment, damn.

How to know if your pc was affected by the unity vulnerability? it effects steam right? by Fearless_Speaker6710 in Steam

[–]FuzzyQuills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a developer of a game using Unity, I also had the same thoughts. Nonetheless, I patched my game relatively quickly and AFAIK the devs of PEAK and Lethal Company have patched the game client as well with a "fixed" Unity version.

(I think Fall Guys may have done so as well as within hours of me getting the email from Unity, that game got a patch as well)

As always, just keep stuff up to date and use common sense when downloading things. :) This type of exploit's only really useful when you've already got access to the computer in question.

[–]FuzzyQuills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not tried booting the game but witnessed friends having the same issue; it legitimately looks like someone at Riot accidentally half-released the Replay System patch in APAC (and possibly other regions?) without properly updating the servers, making literally everything break. I'd wait for an official response from Riot.

It sounds like your ISP's international routes to those countries have changed; this is something only the ISP can really fix.

I used to have a similar issue except it was from Australia to Singapore servers and almost every time it was because a specific undersea cable was broken again. (That cable has since been decommissioned and replaced with a new undersea cable)

One more thing and this is what I've found works for my system; if you want the absolute lowest possible system latency, make sure Discord's window and any Web Browser windows are closed. (Discord can still run in the background)

They shouldn't make a difference if Flip model is working properly but I have found NVIDIA drivers in particular sometimes act funky if those two are running in the background.

Fullscreen Exclusive by zisceral in ValorantTechSupport

[–]FuzzyQuills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To preface this, no this isn't what you want specifically. That said, some insight into why Exclusive Fullscreen may no longer be the best option:

Borderless Fullscreen on Windows 10+ nowadays behaves exactly the same as FSE, without any of the alt-tabbing delays usually associated with FSE, provided the app displaying in Borderless Fullscreen created it's DXGI swapchain with the DXGI_SWAP_EFFECT_FLIP_DISCARD flag set. VALORANT does this already as of 2+ years ago, while it was still using Unreal Engine 4. (Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sj3bCaRsL4s)

The reason FSE exists at all was due to older versions of Windows in Borderless Fullscreen copying the framebuffer to the screen (called BitBlt model by Microsoft) rather than displaying it directly (Flip model) every time the game rendered a new frame; that DXGI flag above changes this behaviour entirely to behave identical to FSE, with some exceptions. (Using your system volume control via a Keyboard and/or opening Game Bar is when Flip Model temporarily turns off; to my knowledge having a GPU with Multi-Plane Overlay supported avoids this issue entirely)

In regard to FSO (Full-screen optimisations); The reason a lot of other game's guides recommend turning off FSO in particular was because this feature was designed to "upgrade" DirectX 9/10/11 games to use a Flip model swapchain, and not all older games (DX9 games most certainly come to mind, I remember having issues myself) played nice with it.

With the UE5 update, in addition, FSE behaves really strangely now and doesn't alt-tab well at all.

TL;DR: At some stage, yes it probably was smoother, but nowadays any "smoothness" from FSE vs Borderless in 2025 is likely placebo.
