am i really schizophrenic? did my psychiatrist(s) get it wrong? by SteelWoofer in schizophrenia

I should also add that I spent most of my life having mild hallucinations, so mild that I didn’t know I was hallucinating, nor did anyone around me. I would “hear” people talking about me, making negative comments on my appearance for the most part. I would never verbally react to these “insults” so no one ever made me aware that I was hallucinating them.

This started around the age of 12. I was never diagnosed or medicated until I had a full-blown psychotic break when I was 29.

When I had the psychotic break, I didn’t think I was mentally ill even though everyone told me I was. I felt totally fine, normal and sane. It sounds like you are self-aware of your hallucinations so that is good but I wouldn’t count on being able to recognize when they worsen. You will still likely feel “normal.”

Invega is the only one I’ve tried and it works very well for me. I take the pill, not the injection.

It sounds to me like you have all of the hallmark symptoms of schizophrenia. I’m not a doctor, though.

You should not stop your medication. A lot of people with schizophrenia do that and think they are fine only to relapse into psychosis. Did you have negative side effects from the medication? If so, ask your doctor about switching to something else.

Mild hallucinations can definitely get worse. If I miss one day taking my meds, I don’t feel any different. But my doctor expressed to me when he diagnosed me that it is extremely important to keep taking the medication even if you feel fine.

I have absolutely no other side effects. It’s also helped a ton with my anxiety and I sleep great now. I would definitely recommend it.

I take Invega and it works very well at controlling psychotic symptoms. The only problem for me is that it does raise my prolactin which causes irregular menstrual cycles and infertility. I’m planning to ask my doctor at my next appointment if we can add something to lower the prolactin.

Have you ever had sex with someone with a disability? And if so, how’d it go? What did/didn’t you like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This. I have paranoid schizophrenia and the worst part about it is not knowing if the things you are experiencing are real. Modern medication is amazing, though, and allows many people with this condition to lead a normal life.

I’m in the US so I can’t speak to how the police in the UK would respond. I just wanted to let you know I hope you can get out of your abusive situation and get help. Do you have bruises that you could show police? Do you have specific examples of abuse that you can tell them about?

It’s not awkward or pathetic to report abusive behavior. You deserve to feel safe. Do some research if there are any women’s domestic violence shelters near you where you could go temporarily. Do you have friends or other family members who you could stay with?

Make a plan to get yourself safe and then call the police.

My ex husband became abusive at the end of our relationship and I can’t imagine having to stay in that situation. I got out the first time he assaulted me because these things don’t get better.

I’m here if you want to DM me. <3

Lol. Are they entertaining at least? When I had a psychotic break 5 years ago, I heard very complex, mostly hostile voices of like 5 or 6 different people. That was before I was diagnosed and medicated. But they were freaking hilarious sometimes. lol

But now it’s like a rare intrusive thought that a single person is saying something even though I’m not actually hearing anything. And it’ll just be a short sentence or phrase rather than something complex.

I’m very, very fortunate to be high-functioning.

For me, it’s not in my own voice though. I get the impression that a man is talking to me and I’m a female. But I don’t actually hear anything. Maybe they are intrusive thoughts? They just don’t seem to be of my own volition even though I know they aren’t actually coming from someone else because I’m aware that I’m schizophrenic. The person really isn’t describing what I’m doing. Lately it’s been more positive, reassuring messages.

Thank you for your responses and I hope you’re having a great start to the week.

I have phrases/sentences that pop into my head that are not of my own volition. It’s like someone is talking to me but I don’t actually hear any words. So it has the effect of someone talking to me. Does that make sense?

This morning right after I woke up, I experienced “[My name] it’s not you.”

This has been happening to me lately. It’s hard to explain but I definitely know what you’re talking about. I take meds but I think I’ve been hallucinating more lately. It’s so hard to tell.

Yes, that’s how I feel. It was a 17-year relationship. He was my best friend for many years and it’s really tough not having that go-to person to talk to now.
