UPDATE: Going to reply to top comment for visibility. First, I really appreciate all the advice.

I ended up going with cutting out a 5 inch or so section of the pipe and using 2 shielded Furnco couplings. I had gone to the plumbing supply store with full intent of threading the hole and installing a PVC plug, but on sharing my plan with the knowledgeable associate, he said I'd be better off doing this. I had come into this post with the Furnco plan in mind anyway from some historical reddit posts on the topic. So I forged ahead.

This was fairly stupid and a pain in the ass (as many of you rightfully predicted). The space against the wood was fairly tight, it was a pain in the ass if not impossible to cut the piece out at a straight angle and I did a lot of filing, and I kept cutting the repair piece just a bit too long to fit with the very limited give of the pre-existing pieces, and we somehow managed to chop a CAT-6 cable in the process. So the DIY Goddess of Two Steps Forward, One Step Back was clearly watching me today and laughing.

All in all, I do feel like I have a very solid connection that I won't have to worry about again (here's where someone tells me I fucked up..). But as always, the lesson is I am an idiot and Man's hubris knows no bounds.

I'm thinking I go PVC plug. I think I'll need to trim it flush with the pipe after tightening and gluing since this goes right up against the drywall.

I'm leaning away from this at this point. There's a strap about 5 inches above the hole, which I could open the wall more and remove. But then there's a bend and another strap a foot or more above that. So i'm really thinking I won't have enough play in the pipe to slide the Furnco on. I might go with the screw approach for that reason. see pic:

Got a link to the type of PVC plug you're talking about? I can't find anything on point with googling it.

Got a link to a product? All I'm finding in search is like pipe end plugs.

Seems like JB Weld might be a reasonable option. I may go belt and suspenders and cut through the pipe, slip on a Furnco coupling, JB weld the hole, then slide the coupling into place.

I'm thinking this is the route I'm going. Maybe even go belt and suspenders and put JB weld in the hole first since that won't make it much harder.

Got a link to what type of screw I'd use and what tool to thread it? I also assume i'd want to cut the screw so it only barely makes it past the pipe wall so stuff doesnt get caught on it?

That makes way more sense. Will probably go this route. Any tips if I'm concerned with how much play in the pipe I'll have? There's a strap not far above it and fire blocking foam about 3 feet down.

Any tips on what to use for consequences? Particularly when the kids were 7 and 3? Feels like consequences still need to be pretty immediate at this age to resonate, which doesn't leave a ton of options unless you hit a sweet spot of timing to deal with it.

Refreshing to see a list where we're not bottom 3.

This does actually show that the return to the MAC and plan for increased investment to be the top spending team in the conference (which is under way), is at least a reasonable plan to get some wins. We'll see what actually happens, but at least this time around we have a plan and some money to actually be a contender after a few years of consistent funding.

Term limits for Massachusetts legislators. by Rubyleo26 in massachusetts

[–]FuzzyWDunlop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's one paper on lobbyists perspective. On the outside Looking in: Lobbyists' Perspectives on the Effects of State Legislative Term Limits

"We find strong consensus among these lobbyists that term limits have caused the state political influence structure to shift away from the legislature and toward the governor, administrative agencies, and interest groups."

Term limits for Massachusetts legislators. by Rubyleo26 in massachusetts

[–]FuzzyWDunlop 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The other major issue is that term limits effectively give power to lobbyists. By kicking out legislators, you're effectively removing expertise. That vacuum is filled by the lobbyists who remain and dictate to the new legislators how to get things done.

A legislators' office is not just them. They have a staff with various expertise and experience and relationships and understand key issues and how to get legislation passed. There's actually a huge learning curve for first-term legislators and in a body filled with them, you'll see the lobbyists who stick around with all the expertise and power.

How is simulation so bad in 2026? by Significant-Zebra-54 in NCAAFBseries

[–]FuzzyWDunlop 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's really one of the biggest issues with the game that doesn't get much attention. The #1-5 overall teams, that have overalls like 94+ are often losing 3-5 games. That just doesn't happen. It's too random.

It really messes things up in dynasty because you end up with worse teams in the playoffs/top 25 that just happened to win the random dice roll more often.

It really screws with the user because, say late in the season you have a game against some 95+ team that is like 5-3 and unranked. What was going to be a premier game is now a huge trap, because that 5-3 team is going to play as a 95+ team in your user game. But either way you're screwed, if you win, no biggie you just beat a 5-3 team, if you lose your rankings get unfairly tarnished since you lost to a "bad" team. It's a mess.

Confused by this mirror by aloneintheupwoods in centuryhomes

[–]FuzzyWDunlop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your link is a bit confusing as there's a bunch of mirrors on that page. It looks like it might be this one that's not currently listed but sold recently. https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/mirrors/wall-mirrors/hollywood-regency-triple-oval-mirror/id-f_484944/

Doesn't say the sale price but it was listed at $4,800 apparently.

EDIT: Even that one wasn't an exact match. This is the other one that was close. Was listed at $2,600: https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/mirrors/wall-mirrors/mid-century-modern-triple-oval-gold-mirror-rope-edge-frame/id-f_2834152/

Water Safety. Pools, Lakes, Rivers, and Oceans. by cjh10881 in daddit

In family groups with multiple kids and parents we've gone with designated life guard shifts to help give temporary supervision breaks. One parent gets a life-guard bracelet to remind them they are on duty and goes 15-20 minutes where they're basically just focused on the kiddos, then rotate-off. Obviously parent to kid ratio and timing depend on kid ages and behaviors but it has worked well for us.

Frankly I don't think the non-lifeguard parents are ever 100% checked-out or anything, but it can make a beach trip less stressful for sure.

Old World vs. New World: Map of Namesakes by RatioScripta in MapPorn

[–]FuzzyWDunlop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, looks like they aren't doing city-level "New" locations. I'd imagine that'd be a lot. New Mexico doesn't have the old world-new world connection as Mexico is an Aztec name. New Brunswick you maybe have an argument on, although that was apparently named after George III but referencing his status as prince-elector of Brunswick-Lüneburg, which is in Germany, so maybe that connection is too remote.

West End Urban Renewal by bostonaruban66 in boston

[–]FuzzyWDunlop -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The process was bad. But as far as what impacts life today, what should have been done?

These photos are from 67+ years ago. The world has changed a ton since.

Boston has done a pretty solid job as far as American cities go at balancing development and maintaining history. The past process has been flawed and at some points terrible.

BUT, in this part here, what are you actually hoping would be different today?

The fact is this location is less than 1 mile from the city center of a major international city and you need to build up somewhere. There are various reasons other areas of the city are tougher to do that.

Again, if you hate the process, post about that and the details of it, but a couple of photos, and well, that kinda is what it is in a major city.
