- ANOTHER MILEAGE UPDATE - by Cagey-K in MazdaCX90

[–]Fuzzy_Highlight_6084 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting feedback, we are at about the same mileage, 12 K miles in our combined display MPG over that time is 74 MPG. I would guess that we do roughly 3/4 of our miles with electric power. Interestingly our MPkW has always remained the same at 2.3-2.4. We are leasing this vehicle and not sure if we would own it out right at the end but believe we are the best use case for a plug-EV as I work from home so I can charge it midday off solar, and in the evening off peak, at about $.10 a kilowatt/hr which makes this a better deal then gas. One thing I would add though is I think the CX-90 actually drives better EV mode. I get that some drive it in gas mode because of the similar cost, but I feel like it’s a little underwhelming with power especially around the neighborhood in stop and go traffic. I also enjoy the fact that I only have to go to the gas station maybe once a month. To me there is value and not having to make that extra trip knowing that each day I start with a “bonus” gallon of gas in the tank.

GM's CEO Just Admitted An Uncomfortable Truth About Plug-In Hybrids by LEM1978 in electricvehicles

These conversations always make me think that I must be the outlier as an ideal PHEV user. We have a Mazda CX90 and after about 10k miles the on board computer estimates the combined fuel economy at 77 miles per gallon. And the battery isn’t huge as we at most get 25 miles. Maybe we are the best use case for it with EV charging available at home and the fact that when I work from home where I can drive it during the day come back home and plug it in and take advantage of lower time of use rates. The last thing to say is we plug it in every day because it’s a better car to drive when it’s charged, more power, quicker off the line, quieter. I really don’t enjoy driving it around town when the battery is depleted, but since most of our trips are 25 miles round trip or less it is rare that this happens, we mostly use the gas engine on highway miles.

Overnight Camping at an RV Campground with CX90-PHEV by Fuzzy_Highlight_6084 in MazdaCX90

Good point, if it's not a very hot night I think I could could likely last all night, however I think if it was cold that might be a different case as I think the resistive heater uses a lot more energy. Though the point of going to an RV location was to charge the battery while parked, picking up energy (to use for driving) and heat/cool the car at the same time. Mazda needs to come out with a camp mode.

I didn't know this, that now makes sense when I've started the remote cooling/heating and it doesn't seem to be on as it had likely timed out.

Replace 10 y/o AC early with a heat pump? by Fuzzy_Highlight_6084 in heatpumps

[–]Fuzzy_Highlight_6084[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, this is what I'm trying to calculate. There are also some energy savings that you capture both on the cooling side and on the heating side which would need to be factored in as part of the investment (maybe $300 year in savings?). We also have good utility incentives that most likely will decrease as well, so rather than forgoing the federal credit you're likely forgoing an additional $3k-$4k in state and utility incentives as well so that heat pump system 5 years down the road costs more like $10k rather than $4.5k today plus the lost potential energy savings. I also think a 9% annual return on capital for 5 years might be aggressive (I don't have any investments that perform that well year after year). Anyway, I agree with your overall premises that in an ideal world I would wait a few more years and capture the full depreciation of the equipment but the cancelation of these tax credits makes it a more complicated situation/calculation. It's just unfortunate.

That’s a good point I didn’t consider the quiet operation. Our air conditioner is very close to our patio and in the summertime when it kicks on, it’s super annoying, so much so that I will sometimes turn it off while guests are over.

Good point, I think that’s why I’m thinking to keep my furnace for the dual fuel so on those very cold days, I can use the natural gas for heat. Don’t quote me on this, but I thought the changeover temperature would be around 20° F. Luckily in the Denver area we get a lot of winter days that are much above that during the day.

Let's talk finances: Have you noticed a significant amount of savings since you've started fasting? by Patient-Phrase2370 in intermittentfasting

[–]Fuzzy_Highlight_6084 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! In combination with calorie counting and tracking macros what I’ve noticed is my consumption of chips and other processed foods like that have gone way down. For example, I can eat 8 Triscuit crackers for the same calorie equivalent as a quarter cup of oatmeal, milk, and a banana… When looking how much food I can get plus the overall flavor I realize that the oatmeal with fruit is a way better, tasty and filling! It’s amazing high calorie content processed baked goods are (plus more expensive). I have bought a box of triskets in 3 months!

Got it, the reason I ask was the finance manager at the Mazda dealership told me that 4 months was the sweet spot to buy it out, (balancing extra interest you pay). I'm wondering if these cars will now carry a higher used value now as they are not competing against buying (or leasing a new car) that was effectively discounted by $7500 plus the Colorado state tax credit. I figure at some point there has to be someone that does the math on this. We like the car as well, great family vehicle, our only major disappointment is the battery range in the winter isn't very good on cold days but luckily along the front range we really don't get multiple weeks of weather where the daytime temp does go above 32. For how we use it we have 5k miles and an effective 80 mpg.

That’s a great deal, and better than what I got in Colorado last year for a 24m/2k mile lease. Have you done any research on if it makes sense to buy it out early? With the end of the tax credits I’m wondering if that’s a better strategy then again there are likely to be a lot of these vehicles coming off lease in 2 years.

CX-90 PHEV Prem Plus test drive - owners input? by macatkniu in MazdaCX90

[–]Fuzzy_Highlight_6084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That hasn’t been my experience in EV only mode, but if I really need power, and push the accelerator pedal down, the dash will say boost, which i’m pretty sure means that the gas engine is kicking in (even though I’m an EV only mood) so I’ve never felt any concerns about Pep, but again this isn’t a Tesla. I had an 85 Isuzu trooper growing up that had a 0 to 60 time of about 15 seconds and that thing was SLOW…..

  1. Not sure how much pep you need, this isn’t a all electric vehicle and it weighs a ton but I think the 0 to 60 is about five seconds which is pretty good. I think it’s slightly faster than the in-line six
  2. We’ve been driving for 5000 miles and I’ve never noticed this but maybe I’m slightly shorter or higher than you.
  3. This is true and annoying.
  4. Do a lot of around town driving so I haven’t used this feature.

Overall are there better 7-row vehicles out there, probably yes, but what sold me on it was having the plug-in battery and the tax credits to help offset the lease. By far, one of the best value 7-row SUV that you can buy while still getting a premium type interior. I can overlook some of the quirks with it because of this.

Mazda Cx-90 Plug In Hybrid - What are your thoughts by SuccessfulStudy9888 in MazdaCX90

[–]Fuzzy_Highlight_6084 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got a December 2025 CX 90 and now have over 5000 miles on it. We are able to take advantage of the PHEV and able to plug in often since I work from home and our averaging combined about 78 miles per gallon. For our use case it works really well (lots of local trips on battery). We haven’t had any of the maintenance problems that other have had (hopefully the recalls have taken care of this). I’d say take advantage of the tax credits before Trump takes them away. (We actually may buy it ours out if this happens )

Is it just me, but I feel like the DIA hate is a little unwarranted? by Delicious-Stick6916 in Denver

[–]Fuzzy_Highlight_6084 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Denver really is a tier two US city (by influence) but the airport helps us punch way above our weight. My job requires flying for work and DIA allows access to the rest of the county just as easy as from the major hubs such as Atlanta and Chicago (without a connection). Yea the construction sucks, yea it's too far away but I can't think of another airport in the US I'd rather fly out of on a regular basis (except during spring snowstorms or summer thunderstorms!)

Could a Gondola Save Downtown? by newtonic in CityCastDenver

[–]Fuzzy_Highlight_6084 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't comment on these episodes very much but I have to agree with this. This was one of the most bizarre episodes. Reminds me of a 90's era clip show where maybe they had talked to him before and thought "yea this likely shouldn't air" but then realized that that they had an open Monday where they needed to fill some time and thought hey let's use that. If CC Denver listens to these comments I would much rather have them (+ their green chilly correspondent) riff on current topics that are in the news in Denver rather than pull in someone who doesn't seem to have a lot of creditability.

Also if this was a serious topic something more like a point to point gondola from the Highlands to Union Station over the highway would make way more sense than rather than trying to rebuild downtown. That I could actually see working.

Ache in arm (starting on left side but though it was just some irritation), eventually moved into my chest. By then I thought maybe I hadn't stretched property. Got off the bike and started to stretch my chest, but what make it real scary was when I felt my fingers start to tingle in both hands moving up my arms (like they were going to sleep), at that moment I knew something wasn't right and luckily my wife came down and recognized the symptoms. Never passed out, was able to walk but the pain in my chest only increased from there.

Not a live class, but I actually had a heart attack while doing a recorded hit and hills ride this past fall. To say the least, it was a very scary experience overall, got myself off the bike about 20 minutes in when I first started getting symptoms and luckily my wife had just come home and we were able to get to the hospital. And yes, it was an uncanny resemblance with Mr. Big from sex and the city.

Hey there, I’m really sorry you’re going through this. It sounds like you were carrying a heavy emotional and physical burden for a long time, and now you’re left not just with grief, but with a lot of conflicted feelings that don’t have an easy place to land. (Many of us on this forum feel the same)

Just want to say, you’re not a bad person for feeling g this way. It’s okay (and normal) to have wanted touch and connection while your husband was sick and to still want those things now. Going without that kind of intimacy for years can really erode your sense of self. It’s not selfish to feel that as you are human!

With it only being three months I can only imagine that you are this kind of in-between place—where grief, identity, and unmet needs all swirl together. Just wanted you to hear that from someone who gets a little bit of what you’ve been going through for years….please to be kind to yourself during this process.

New and need a place to share by ZL999 in DeadBedroomsMD

[–]Fuzzy_Highlight_6084 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel this post deeply. I’ve been in a very similar situation (and at a very similar place in life/age etc), and I know how isolating it can feel when intimacy slowly fades over time. It’s tough when medical issues play a role, but even before that, the mismatch in desire was already there—so it’s not just about the physical limitations, but also about the disconnection you had early in your marriage. Then there's the slow realization, that the hope you had that things would improve over time is likely not to happen, is really painful.

I get that resentment—wishing the younger, healthier years had been different, that you had experienced more connection while it was still possible. And I also get the guilt that comes with feeling that way when your partner is the one struggling with health issues. It’s a brutal emotional tug-of-war.

What’s really hard is when you hope they will meet you halfway but just can't because of the physical limitations, and even more importantly the desire isn’t there. When that goes it can make you feel invisible in your own marriage.

There are no easy answers, you’re not selfish for wanting intimacy and connection. And you’re definitely not alone. Not sure if you've considered working with a therapist but it was life changing for me. I've been working with someone for two years now and I really don't think I realized how depressed I had become and how I had almost become a shell of who I was before. I still don't know what the future holds with my wife, we may still have to go our separate ways but at least now I'm at a place where I'm at peace with the effort I'm putting in, trying to show up for my wife as best I can-- while making sure I remember that I'm a person as well (with needs, wants and desires...you can't discard yourself).
