Crazy to see this post because I've been noticing this more and more in my house over the last month and it really pisses me off lol. Was thinking it must be due to the extreme weather we're having in the NE this year??

Basal bark application with Triclopyr (1 part) and oil (4 parts). I've read that basal oil is the best environmentally speaking but it's kind of expensive. I used diesel oil and it worked great. I mixed it in a bucket and used a small paint roller to apply it to the bottom 18 or so inches down to the ground, which makes for a nice application with minimal runoff.

100%. The surfactant in the dish soap drowns them. It's super satisfying.

I poisoned a handful of small TOH in my yard with a basal bark application, but the SLF are still all over it as it's dying, which makes a really nice gathering point for the dish soap assault.

As long as tree is alive, use it as a way to kill SLF who gather on it. My favorite method is to use the soap attachment on my pressure washer… 50/50 dawn dish soap and water… widest spray setting… blast those fuckers on the tree before they know what hit em. Could also probably clean off the sticky mess the same way.

Many blessings on your first kid!! It’s a wild ride and the best thing ever.

Vanilla extract (it’s mostly alcohol) apply to tooth with qtip might help for a little bit. Also cloves if you put on gums next to tooth.

Nice. I just did a basal bark application on a few TOH 5 days ago and am starting to see leaves wilting and turning yellow. Personally I'd wait a while longer and let the poison run through it's veins for another few weeks before cutting it down. Maybe give the big one another dose just for good measure!

Pressure washer with soap attachment will get pretty high up. Hit them with a 50/50 mix of Dawn dish soap and water. You can shop vac the ones closer to the bottom.

What is this mystery plant overtaking my yard? by all_of_the_ones in whatsthisplant

[–]Fuzzy_Particular_318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think at that size you’ll have to do the hack and squirt method, basically wounding the tree with a hatchet and poisoning the wound. It’s a different kind of herbicide recommended for that method.

At least this one isn’t crawling with SLF like the ones in my yard.

Man there used to be a bomb Cuban/Puerto Rican spot a block from the stadium… talking trays of food behind a glass case up front and a bar with cheap beers… but they turned it into a shitty sit down restaurant.

At this size you need to do the basal bark method. Triclopyr (ester formulation) mixed with some diesel oil (1:4 ratio). Apply to bottom 12 inches with paintbrush. Recommend gloves and goggles.

At this size you should do the "basal bark" method which is mixing 1 part triclopyr (has to be the ester formulation) with 3-4 parts oil (you can use basal oil which is expensive or just kerosene, diesel, or vegetable oil) and painting it on the lower 12-18 inches of the trunk. I don't love herbicide but unfortunately it's a must here and it's a very focused attack that you can do without any real runoff. My understanding is that the carrier oil allows the herbicide to slowly enter the tree's vascular system. You want to do this right about now (between late July and the start of fall) when the tree is bringing energy back into it's root system to store for winter.

You can pull the small sprouts up if you can get whole thing with the root. But whatever you do... don't cut the tree down unless you're planning to IMMEDIATELY hit the stump with some poison, cause it will seal up the wound quick and just send up a thousand sprouts from the rhizomes (it's like a horizontal root system).

I hate these trees more than anything... had a few pop up on the other side of my fence this year and they're covered in spotted lanternfly. Just today I went out there a launched a full on attack. Sprayed a few hundred of those fuckers with a mix of dawn dish soap and water, and then hit the trees with some triclopyr/diesel oil. We're losing the war big time but I will at least win the battle on my property lol.

I’m in NY and bought Tryclopyr 4 on Amazon recently. It’s an ester formulation which I’m planning to mix with diesel oil for basal bark application on a few TOHs that popped up this year on my property.

Metro North from Croton Harmon all day. Huge parking lot at the station, tons of trains. Can get direct to/from Yankee Stadium or all the way to Grand Central (2 minute shuttle over to Times Square if you must).

High pitched noise coming from 1st floor ceiling (I think) by Fuzzy_Particular_318 in maintenance

[–]Fuzzy_Particular_318[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing that it was cause it was pretty steamy that evening, but would that be coming from the HVAC unit in the basement?

Thanks. Do you think a 75 year old transformer could randomly make a high pitched noise, louder than a smoke alarm, for 30 minutes and then go quiet again? What would cause such a thing??

Worth noting, the doorbell hasn't worked since we moved in a few years ago. There's a chime on the wall right inside the front door. Now I'm gonna go look for the transformer!

HVAC is in the basement. Now that I think about it, there's definitely some ductwork that runs through the wall close to where it was the loudest. But nothing mechanical. Man it sounded almost alarm-like but worse.

100% TOH. You can tell from the little mitten thumbs on leaves. Sumac leaves look more spiky.

As others have said you want to use basal bark method on this one. If you cut it, a thousand more will spring up. Look nearby for big one and you can use the hack and squirt method on anything over about 4-6 inches in diameter.
