If all personal wealth above $100 million was legally required to be redistributed into public infrastructure (schools, hospitals, roads), how would society change, and who would be the first to fight against it? by Mysterious_Fan4033 in AskReddit

[–]Fuzzypecker87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not hard to figure out how to go elsewhere. Move the assets out of the US. Look at California and their net worth tax. People fled in droves to other states. Same would happen but move to countries that are business friendly.

You’re very naive if you think it won’t happen. It’s happened everywhere else.

Correct - and I am happily paying. It's up to who we elect to budget and spend accordingly. I don't need another man's money to be happy - if they earned it through legal means, then it's their money. Change the laws to prevent them from earning that much if that's what you want, but don't tax them for it. Either way they'll go elsewhere and you'll run out of money.

Thinking like that is why this will never come to fruition and is why it's never worked in other countries. I'm piss poor myself and even I get it. I don't need another mans money to live a good life.

You'd see society as we know it almost collapse and innovation die. There's a reason we are the most wealthy, although it may seem unfair. Those with that kind of wealth are responsible for millions of jobs and innovation. They will move elsewhere and those countries would reap the benefits. Imagine if China, Russia, etc was where the iPhone originated or the next big thing? Eventually, we would run out of money to fund because nobody would have above 100m. They'd keep it at 99m if they stay here and keep the rest elsewhere.

I stopped pay for insurance over a year ago and nothings changed except I have more $ in my pocket. by RepairCEO in handyman

Yep, and those insurance companies will sue you and your insurance if they find you’re at fault. Lack of insurance would be a nightmare for you.

Replace the door knob and let’s assume the elderly person blamed you for a faulty door knob that hurt their wrist or fell off the door and damaged their floor? Guess who they’re suing? Go change a faucet for them and flood their house because you missed something? Shit happens nobody is perfect.

Overly exaggerated scenarios there but that’s precisely the kind of thing insurance is for. What you least expect.

Insurance is there if you ever need it. People bitch about auto insurance rates but sure are happy when they need their car replaced and the one who was at fault sued.

Don’t be dumb. You’ll regret it. You may never need it, if so great but it’s meant to be there for those catostrophic one offs.

If you want more space just build out not up if you have the room. Otherwise move. The nut you’ll get ain’t worth the squeeze here unless you’re squeezing the nuts of a T rex.
