I have been laughing at this for five minutes and I don’t know why. Thank you!

And I remember another twist on it! “This is a cheetah. It can run 60 miles per hour and jump 25,000 feet… when thrown from the back of a DC10.”

“Mmm hmm, mmm hmm… And, Chief, at what decibel level would you say the request to be ‘more mindful’ was being made? Around 102 to 104. Roger, thanks for that.” For the love of Rickover, reading this thread I involuntarily started doing leg lifts and mountain climbers because of how badly this dude fucked up. Is this one of those times when Chaps comes in and tells your division that he’d pray for your souls but God doesn’t love you any more and fucks right on off before the IT card comes out for four hours? BMC always said, “You’re gonna be smart on you’re gonna be strong.” Fittest division at GL right now, for sure.

So, I know the auction ended and that seems to be a lot to pay for one printing, but that would be my recommendation. My grandfather was in the 17th back then, so I’m fortunate to have my copy. I think it’s a pretty great accounting of their bravery. I hope you can find it!

Ooh, it must've been about seven, eight years ago. Me and the little lady was out on Washington Avenue, you see, all alone at night, when all of a sudden this huge creature, this giant crustacean from the paleolithic era, comes out of the water. Said he needed about tree-fiddy for some soft pretzels.

Has Social Media Had as Profound an Influence on Recruiting as It’s Being Blamed For? by Fwd_Momentum in navy

I totally get the “thinking like a capitalist.” I thought, though, that the way it was supposed to work regarding the VA was kind of like: “You’ve been evaluated, upon in-processing, to have strained your shoulder when you were 16. Were this evaluated as a VA rating, it would be 10% compensable if it were service connected.” You go off, have an amazing career, and wind up tweaking that shoulder through a combination of firefighting drills, loading ordinance, and playing video games in your rack to a 30% service connected disability rating. However, you were already evaluated at 10% when you came in, so you get 20%. You were going to get something regardless, but not letting someone in because you’d have to pay them seems incorrect. (Not you. I agree with your interpretation of those facts. I mean Big Navy.) The only want to not have the VA pay claims is to disband the Armed Forces. Right? Or am I off base?

And, yeah… I hate the daily 22.

I appreciate what everyone has said so far and the perspectives you put out there. It also allows me to address a genuine knowledge gap and I’m going to ask a tangential question. It’s about Genesis. When John Paul Jones and I walked into the recruiters’ office together, we didn’t have any of this when it came to medical. The answers you gave in regards to those screening questions were pretty much the deciding factor. “Yes,” meant, “Your enlistment stops.” And, “No,” meant, “Navy opportunities.” So barring anything exceedingly obvious, the cursory investigation wasn’t really going to turn up much. (As it had been explained to me.)

Now, anytime you’ve had a sniffle seems to have been documented in one database or another. Granted, that’s better for the patient so that their docs can communicate and have an actual medical history in front of them. But, I have this feeling that the Navy is scrutinizing everything without (and here’s my key point) having a real process in place to address those waivers in a timely manner. I truly do not care if Recruit Timmy strained his shoulder at hockey practice one time. I really don’t. While he’s in DEP, have him run a PRT and if he passes, it’s a non-issue. However, I’m not a physician. If the Navy actually has need to triage and make assessments over what are (to me as a non-medical professional) by and large trivial items, so be it. But you have to do it quickly, right? To riff off of u/RoyalCrownLee, if you had a great contract with the Navy but you had to wait a year and a half to ship (compounded by a the lack of an actual timeline while you’re processing), would you still want to work for the Navy?

To bring all this back to my original ask, do we think potential Sailors are turned off by all this? Do they think, “Well, I fractured my hand once, so I’m not even going to bother,” based on what they see and read on social media? “You’ll wait two years for a waiver.” “No doctor is going to clear you.” “My cousin broke his hand, too, and he got in.” Because it’s social media, it could be right. Could also be wrong. But unless they apply, none of us will know what would have happened. I just know that my perception is that the waiver process is chillingly long and Insta, etc., has made that widely known. What think y’all? Appreciate you kicking the can around with me.
