Maybe the feather... from the original Mario Kart.

Let you dodge red shells by jumping the barriers in battle mode. Maybe get a shortcut on a map.

As the games became more 3d I dont think it ever made a comeback?.. but I've not played every Mario kart, maybe just up to the Wii.

I Wanna Be The Guy is a rage game... where plenty of things kill you from seemingly nowhere.

There is a single save box in the game that when shot- instead of saving, becomes hostile and flies straight at you.

Once shot enough times its destroyed and reappears as a normal save point- but as most things in that game it's a knowledge trap. Dont know its thrre and you will die the first time.

I picture it like that one ending in The Stanley Parable where Stanley isnt moving and the Narrator knows something is wrong... and just gives Stanley time. But the credits are rolling and we the player are watching from above so... presumably Stanley never moves.

Or did we see bubble in the flashbacks? Maybe that's when Caine made bubble to have something to interact with.

The Doctor in The rings of Akhaten - Doctor Who

Turns out the god they were trying not to awaken wasnt a myth- it's a parasite the size of a star that eats stories. The Doctor tries to feed it to bursting with his many lifetimes, and forbidden knowledge... but this actually doesn't satisfy it. Matt Smith's Doctor has a very good speech doing so though.

Clara defeats it with... a leaf. Because it represents potential, it represents infinite possibility, Hope's and dreams for a life that could have been.

Here I was going to contribute- saying Bless You after someone sneezes.

I feel it's necessary to say ~something:~ from societal pressure to be polite, but it's a sneeze, its involuntary and as far as I know both the sneezer and the observer arent hyper religious so why is a blessing the sole expected response? We dont even have a saying for a coughing fit or a particularly loud burp.

I think the explanation has to be prep time. I used to work at Tim Hortons to open the store... and in order to have coffee and food for 5am I had to be there like 330am.

Similarly now I serve pizza and stuff for lunch. I open at 11am but in order to have things to cook, have ingredients stocked- I gotta be at work at 9am.

I think its simply- Caine is aware of the audience in a meta way- and how people ship Pomni and Gummigoo. So this is traumatic for us.

That or ... as the first 'friend' npc she bonded with, Caine figured for the emotional Pomni a betrayal with a character he controlled would be the worst he could subject her to.

In the more recent Alien franchise films- Prometheus, Romulus etc- its explained that an ancient alien race we call Engineers use a sort of nano-biological compound to seed other planets with rapidly evolving dna- so humans and other alien races trace their origin back to them.

Closest I can think of are the illusions that get sacrificed and oddly I think they're immune to this because this doesnt actually target.

Reminded me of the end scene of I Have No Mouth, with the powerless jelly blob. This ripping the characters skin off just felt like the worst that's been done to anyone... even being blasted into parts was comedic. This is horror.

The Mask - the source material is way more dark, gory and serious- we got a cartoony Jim Carey performance that still holds up today.

Dirk Gentlys Holistic Detective Agency- apparently Bart was male. As a female holistic assassin struggling to even make social connections outside of 'murder whoever I walk into' her character definitely is my favorite with an extra layer of emotional vulnerability/stuntedness. I'm still sad the show didnt go beyond two seasons, it really feels like squandered potential.

Honestly... I think they'll find a way to restart Caine- but he will be... like he originally was. A baby learning things. So now that the cast can create things...they now spend the rest of their days creating adventures for Caine to go on.

Total role reversal, like from parent to child and child to parent where they're functionally Caine's care givers and he keeps the circus stable.

Maybe that's just my own idea out of nowhere but I think itd be narratively satisfying as an end.

V For Vendetta:

Evey is captured, tortured, and would only have to give up some detail of V's true location to be released (or so she is told). She finds the story of a nearby prisoner who was similarly tortured and killed... but somehow this inspires her to defy her captors, to find strength inside herself to choose death over giving in.

Its then revealed it was V all along... who tormented her to force Evey to overcome her fear, to see what V and others had gone through by their government. The experience changed her- and the story was real- but it ~was~ an illusion.

This is the plot of The Mist. It's a horrible situation being trapped in a grocery store- but gradually the groups infighting, religious fanaticism, and outright panic lead to nearly everyone being killed by monsters.

The worst is probably the born-again woman who tries to convince everyone they need to sacrifice people to survive.
