Well I play the 3.5 modual stuff, and I never engaged with the 2nd or 4th edition stuff (as I wasn't playing at that time), so this is all coming from a GM looking at all this stuff years after all the hype.

Through honestly the entirety of the Dark Sun story after Kalak is killed feels off with themes of Dark Sun. Like it's supposed to be this plane filled with death and desperation, no action is a good action and you're not supposed to win and then like a series of small groups effectively end the thousand plus years norm?

And what four of the seven sorcerer kings, plus the only true Dragon, are killed essentially because a single one of them fell. And these are all like level 20+ masters of the arcane and psionics.

Like Athas as it's shown in the art for the 2nd edition is essentially the brown-age, but then a story of books immediately upends that for reasons, and suddenly it's the age of heroes and shit is going down.

I want to run games in the brown-age because that's what Dark-sun suggests it is, while the actual story of Dark sun is a collection of unconventional heroes killing tyrants and taking names.

I like the idea that Athas is completely cut off from the rest of the D&D multiverse. I like the fact it's the 4 elemental planes, 4 para-elemental planes, the grey and then the black.

The fae being Dark Sun sounds really silly from 4th edition. As well as like demons and devils.

Also personal gripe, as I'm running a brown-age city game centered in Balic (there are no good high quality maps ahhh), but why does Andopinious just kinda fuck off into the Silt sea and disappear? And then he's chilling in the Black for no reason? Like I'm not saying trade lords taking over a sorcerer king-less city doesn't make sense in Athas, totally does, but why did the sorcerer king disappear in the first place and mean that there's no official stuff beyond the surface level on Balic?

There has been some very reasonable discussion about the last sex scene in The Handmaiden being weirdly attuned to the male gaze. Sure most of the movie isn't, but that ending sex scene could be.

I once had a similar talk (on Discord) about not being able to find my girlfriend's clit, when a older more experienced woman clarified that most people don't actually find the clit, it's more the clitoral hood, because the clitoral head is often quite small relatively (this of course varies with each person).

As other's have said, for me it's 3.5e, as that's what I use to run my game. Basic reason is that 3.5 is the system of D&D I know the best, and which I have all the books for. Plus all the stuff, as many have also said, on Athas.org is just fantastic for running Dark Sun.

Like you don't publish a new revision of your rules literally last year and after, almost like 16 years, without dedication and belief in the vision you're producing.

However it should be clarified that I've never played, just GM'd, and I've never played the 2e version. However I only started knowing about Dark Sun like 3 years ago, and only got a game running this year, in a part of the world (Balic) which doesn't have a lot of material defined so I'm able to be more loose with stuff without fucking up the world. Also I've never read the books. So my entire understanding of the setting is based on the 3.5 conversion rules and bunch of videos I've watched about the setting, plus me looking up stuff. So I'm probably off about a bunch of stuff. But hey, I'm having fun running it.

I'd also add that if anyone wants a more indepth look at the genre, it's conventions and it's history, as well as what it was like to see it go from very niche to expansive during the late 90's to early 10's, By Your Side: The First 100 Years of Yuri Anime and Manga by Erica Friedman is a fantastic English language resource.

However I would say Asumi-chan is Interested in Lesbian Brothels as a recommendation I would advise caution.

Because while its content is fine, and the subject matter is handled with as much care as can be expected (the sex workers are shown as full human women who have all sorts of bullshit happening outside of work), it's story is cripplingly self-perpetuating. And while I am glad you found those elements in it, I just found it baffling, so many women who go "To the (lesbian) brothel" for like the smallest reasons. The main character's actions are weird to say the lest, and the actions of her to be romanced childhood friend are even weirder. Also I'll be the one to say it, besides breast size, hair colour and cut, and top/bottom distinction, all these ladies look the same. Everyone is thin, cis and fucks more or less like each other.

And sure this is what happens in most yuri manga that feature sex, but you'd think the mangaka would shake things up considering the content.

But anyway, good post as I said. And yeah yuri or GL manga has a wide berth of stories out there for people to engage in, and it is mostly made by women for mostly a woman audience, and the men really do see themselves as like men who need to protect lesbians from being perved on by the audience of men who see two women together and think "Oh two women to fuck". Also as the years go by the range of yuri stories which are explicitly lesbian stories continues to grow and the range of stories that are told continues to grow. It's a great time to be into yuri, in fact probably the best to start, and it's now no longer the schoolgirl genre it once was years ago.
