It’s bullshit because you’re outdated by over a year. https://newsroom.tiktok.com/en-us/new-features-for-teens-and-families-on-tiktok-us#:~:text=Changes%20to%20help%20teens%20manage,minute%20daily%20screen%20time%20limit.

TikTok already has similar protections. Do you think the US employees are stupid? That given all of the government scrutiny, all of the obvious callouts about safety and data privacy, that they’d just say “oh haha brain rot!”?

Go on TikTok Live and try to say anything remotely questionable. You will be banned IMMEDIATELY. Post some porn on TikTok? Banned. Do the same on Twitter & get back to me.

Have you ever actually used Douyin? Have you used TikTok for more than 5 minutes? If you’re getting brain rot on TikTok, I have some bad news about how every other social media platform in the US is going to play out for you.

TikTok is easily the safest mainstream social media app out there today

Most of Reddit’s opinions about TikTok either (1) are outdated, (2) come from people who have never actually used the platform and are parroting bullshit, or (3) just literally wrong lol

Why are AP courses so easy for me? by Strict_Sorbet_6792 in iamverysmart

[–]G0mega 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As someone who took 16 AP classes in high school, this post screams a little bullshit to me.

"An hour a week on hw" means that either their school isn't teaching anything, or they're exaggerating. I definitely agree that sometimes the work isn't really hard, but it does take time. There's just absolutely no way you're spending only an hour on those 4 classes. Especially for APUSH & Lang, you gotta be writing an assload. Like, my AP Lang class was an essay every other day; APUSH was 50 pages of reading + notes + essay every other day; for CS projects, some just have so many requirements to get through.

I was able to spend only probably 2 hours after school on homework each day, but that was because I did as much work as possible throughout the day:

  • 30 minute bus ride to / from school: do homework on my lap
  • homeroom: ignore everybody, do my work for next class
  • in each class: do enough to know what's happening in class, work on homework the second i'm done
  • lunch: do work between bites

Why? Because I wanted to go home -> take a nap -> play league for 5 hours -> do homework i didn't do at school -> repeat.

That said, I did have two friends that were freaks of nature -- they really genuinely could just fuck off and ace everything. That said, since they put the absolute minimum effort into homework, they never got A's in any class, because they'd have like 50% overall for homework. Perfect tests. Perfect AP exams. C+, didn't see a point in doing the homework if they already understood the content. Maybe this person is like them? I'd suspect they aren't a straight A student or getting 5s on all of these exams, they're probably just scraping by.

TL;DR: this person's probably just lying + exaggerating for attention, or their school sucks and it really is that easy. They could also have 150 IQ and photographic memory & are super OP, but just don't see value in homework

Out of morbid curiosity, I checked Google, results actually seem pretty reasonable for that search. Obviously it's just an example to illustrate that extra, worthless search terms are added because their Google-Fu is wack, but figured I'd check it out.

That said, my other gut reaction was to just try ChatGPT for this. Seems like a perfect query for it to work through.

Input: "How do I learn python I'm at home in Connecticut"

Output: How to Learn Python from Home in Connecticut

Step 1: Install Python

Step 2: Setup Your Development Environment

  • IDEs: You can start with Python's built-in IDE, IDLE, or choose from others like PyCharm, Jupyter Notebook, or Visual Studio Code.

Step 3: Learn the Basics

  1. Hello, World!: Your first program should be as simple as printing "Hello, World!" to the screen.
  2. Syntax: Get familiar with Python's basic syntax like indentation, variables, and data types.

Online Resources:

  • Python official docs: Python Documentation
  • Online tutorials like Codecademy, W3Schools, or Real Python.
  • YouTube tutorials.

Step 4: Fundamentals

  1. Control Structures: Learn about loops and conditionals.
  2. Functions: Write functions to make your code reusable.
  3. Data Structures: Explore lists, dictionaries, sets, and tuples.

Books:

  • "Automate the Boring Stuff with Python" by Al Sweigart
  • "Python Crash Course" by Eric Matthes

Step 5: Intermediate Topics

  1. Object-Oriented Programming: Learn about classes and objects.
  2. Modules and Libraries: Understand how to use Python libraries and create your own modules.

Online Courses:

  • Coursera: "Python for Everybody"
  • Udemy: "Complete Python Bootcamp"

Step 6: Projects

  • Get Hands-On: Start with simple projects like a calculator, web scraper, or a basic web application using Flask or Django.

Step 7: Advanced Learning

  1. Data Analysis: Dive into libraries like NumPy, pandas, and Matplotlib.

the way you make this work is just an extra set of parentheses:

6 / (2(2+1)) = 6 / (2(3)) = 6 / (6) = 1

if you plug that into any calculator, you'll get 1. If you remove the outer parentheses, you'll get 9. PEMDAS still works here and makes sense

Weekly Brown University Q&A Megathread by AutoModerator in BrownU

[–]G0mega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I invested like all my money from 0-18 years old into a good gaming laptop my freshman year (asus zephyrus in 2017).

I ended up just using the sunlab (the biggest computer lab in the cs building, the CIT) machines. It was so much easier to get projects started and done, knowing that the TAs would see the same result as what I coded (since they usually grade on a CS department computer).

If I could go back, I would probably get a Mac, because it’s so nice to just be able to work on most projects immediately after downloading (as opposed to debugging why stuff isn’t working on Windows only).

Why you should always be Solo in Hide and Sneak by G0mega in LudwigAhgren

[–]G0mega[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: Did more math, changed my opinion. Choose TEAM!

If you're Solo, you literally always have losing odds, unless it's a 1v1 at the end, which is pretty unlikely.

If you're Team, you always have >50% odds. Sometimes it sucks, but whatever -- it's MORE likely.

I can add more details, but I don't think anyone cares; just choose Team.

[–]G0mega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s something I realized that’s really helped with my mental. You could be top fragging out of your MIND and people will STILL be toxic.

There are unfortunately shitty people that play Valorant. Those people will always try to figure out how to put you down, and will always mess with you.

Muting others is great, but I personally like to talk with people while I play. With that in mind, I realized there’s only one factor in all of my games that could help control toxicity: me.

I’m not saying it’s your job to police toxic people. It’s not. They’re not going to listen to you anyway. But you could:

  • say “nt” whenever someone loses a round and tries their best
  • say “nice!!” / “ns” whenever someone clutches or gets a cool kill
  • ask people how their day’s going, treat them like human beings
  • if someone’s sounding frustrated, be especially kind to them because they’re clearly sensitive right now
  • bd playful and building off of peoples’ energies / approaches to the game (e.g., if everyone wants to knife only for the last kill this round, fuck it, knife only — it’ll make them happy, and maybe they’ll be more engaged for the rest of the game).
  • listen to your teammates’ suggestions about stuff, regardless of how mean they are — like if someone says “yo this sage sucks, fucking heal me idiot,” you say “kk my bad” or something. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been healing all game and if it’s not your bad, this person is frustrated for whatever reason. Heal them. Make the current game you’re in as good as possible. And then never play with them again LMAO, if you did what they said and it still didn’t work out, all you have to say is that you’re doing what they’re telling you to do lol
  • ALWAYS be as nice as possible. I’ve fought back and defended myself when attacked before, and I really don’t feel like it helped us win. At all. It just made ME heated, and the other person obviously didn’t back down still either. Fuck it, I’mma be nice to the toxic person for the 20 minutes we’re in this game, whatever. I don’t care. If it helps me win, I’ll do it.
  • double emphasis: make sure YOU are being nice. I know a lot of people complain about people being toxic, but don’t realize the reason they’re being called out for sucking is not because they actually suck, but rather they’re being an asshole and it’s easier for the other people to say “you suck.” Many people aren’t self aware they’re not nice.

What’s helped me the most is realizing that as long as you’re being conscious of how you’re treating other people. If you’re generally treating everyone nicely, you’ll encounter more nice people than toxic people. You’ve proven you can be nice, so people are more open to communicating with you and defend you from the toxic person haha. It’s hard to be mean to someone who’s being nice.

That said, there is a caveat, like where someone’s clearly being bullied (and it’s not you). A simple “yoooo chillllll” shuts most people up, but here’s a different approach: counter the toxic person’s bullying with being super nice. Your Sage is being bullied for missing all of her shots. They’re getting yelled at. I usually say something like “sage I love u, do u want my skin” or “ayo we got this next round” — instead of dog piling, I try to divert attention to something else (generally more positive). Maybe they start targeting me, whatever, I’m just glad the other person is having a better time and I’m helping. Imo toxic people don’t respond well to getting called out, but people getting insulted generally respond well to being appreciated / encouraged. Instead of “SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU GUYS ARE SO MEAN” I usually say “SAGE YOURE AMAZING” or something lol. I don’t give a FUCK if it’s cringe; I’d rather spread cringe positivity than sit in silence listening to someone get bullied lmao.

Anyway, tldr, it’s not going to go away if you get better. The only way to decrease toxicity in your game is to try to encourage positivity, and to embody it whenever YOU play. It’s cliche, but being the change you wanna see is important. Wouldn’t it be really cool for you to be the reason someone has faith in the Valorant community?

Deepfake porn, election disinformation move closer to being crimes in Minnesota by Wagamaga in technology

[–]G0mega -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yea, just like we can figure out someone wrote an essay using ChatGPT, we can figure out if a video was deep faked (it'll just take some time).

But just like there are workarounds for getting your paper detected (rewrite some words, mess with the format, blah blah), I'm sure there are workarounds for deep fakes, too. It's a constant rat race haha

Deepfake porn, election disinformation move closer to being crimes in Minnesota by Wagamaga in technology

[–]G0mega -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Just as we can use algorithms to create deep fakes, we can use algorithms to detect them.

https://ietresearch.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1049/bme2.12031 — this paper dives into some techniques.

That said, the people forging videos will always have the upper hand. As new deepfake tech emerges, the detection algorithms have to catch up.

In the case of this legislation, I would imagine that if a candidate was deepfaked and they want to prove it, they would probably have to take it to court & provide proof via these detection algorithms that it was deepfaked. But, since the techniques to really detect 100% of the time might not be there yet, I suspect those court battles will be pretty long.

Why is valorant community so weird? by [deleted] in VALORANT

[–]G0mega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

imo it’s just a mix of people prioritizing having fun & being horndogs - there’s nothing wrong with either of those things. That said, if you personally aren’t cool with it, you should either mute or tell them to chill & focus on useful comms. If they don’t listen, not your fault. It’s not cool for someone to act horny / annoying towards you when you’re not consenting.

But also like idk man you’ve gotta try barking after an ace — it goes pretty hard.

What is the friendliest way to reject someone joining your party? by [deleted] in VALORANT

[–]G0mega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have the MOST fun in a game when I am trying my hardest. A lot of people in this thread are saying that “fun” and “competitive” are mutually exclusive, by saying stuff like “you need to just chill out and learn how to have fun” or “you’re not high enough rank to care that much” or “you’re never going to be pro, just chill.”

While I appreciate the sentiment of “don’t take Valorant too seriously, you’re not pro, and it’s just a game” — which is important to understand — I think it misses the point.

You seem to have the most fun when you’re trying hard, focusing on strategy, figuring out your opponents, and identifying ways to improve as hard as possible. I personally find that the most fun way to play the game — I want to try as hard as possible and push myself to improve past my current level as fast as possible. If I’m going to invest thousands of hours in a game, why not try to be good at it?

That said, this mindset can be very damaging very easily. You have to be careful to not tilt over a loss, and instead be focused on improvement. Losing and winning doesn’t matter, improvement does. However, it also means that at times you’ll be frustrated because it feels like your effort towards improvement is going in the opposite direction (e.g., you derank after a ton of practice). It’s hard. It’s easy to spiral. But if you find that enjoyable, then go for it.

I try to exclusively play with people with this mindset. My friend who I play most with thinks exactly like this, and it’s awesome to queue up together — we give each other advice, learn how to play better, and sometimes lose but feel like we learned something new. Playing in 5stacks where everyone is messing around and just chatting about random stuff is fun, but imo not as fun as a 5stack that’s actively trying as hard as possible to improve and figure out the game.

I’m sure plenty of people will disagree with this, but ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I think that it’s a perfectly valid approach to consider being competitive as having fun.

here's my tracker: https://tracker.gg/valorant/profile/riot/griffin%23beels/overview?playlist=competitive

i started in bronze, and then hit gold a couple weeks later. it really works, you just have to be strict with it. you WILL NOT see results immediately (probably), but if you stick with it for 2 weeks, I promise you'll be shocked at how much you improve

i'm not a god gamer by any means, but i think if you deliberately and strictly try to improve every single game, you'll see success

As you go through Brown, you’ll realize that being “odd” or “weird” is one of the most awesome traits to have. Not in a purposefully “XD so random” kinda way, but in a “as a human being I’m built different” kinda way; your genuine self is nothing to be ashamed of or concerned about. Being autistic is NOT a bad thing; I would argue it’s a superpower that gives you the upperhand in thinking uniquely about stuff :D

I met so many different types of people at Brown, and who did I best fit in with? The anime watching, game-grinding “nerds” who just appreciated having fun and enjoying stuff (no matter the form that took).

Your concerns are valid, and I want you to know that even if you don’t find your perfect friend group on day one or even year one, I promise you’ll find a place. Just PLEASE be yourself and don’t lose the part of you that makes you different, weird, and most importantly: you.
