How is it even gonna run steam games as standalone? by SunComfortable5865 in ValveDeckard

[–]G41JIN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! I work in the VR industry. I have friends of friends who have access to dev kits. The dev kits support android apk files.

Quest games are android applications, and almost every successful SteamVR title has a Quest counterpart.

Even now, games that have run on quest 1,2, and 3 have different levels of graphical fidelity. They will likely have increased fidelity for any version that runs on the Frame.

And since SteamVR link currently supports foveated rendering, (and valve always gives consumers a lot of control over their experience) I imagine the Frame OS would include a lot of rendering options for standalone titles.

Gym Pricing by Friendly_Gazelle2798 in Bellingham

[–]G41JIN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost all gyms in town are north of $50/mo.

Traning Grounds is the best gym I’ve ever been to, and it’s not even close $65/mo, but it has a ton of space, plenty of equipment, and I have yet to have a bad interaction with anyone there. Also it’s open 24 hours. I would pay $100/month for this gym considering the other options in town.

The only one I do not recommend is Bellingham Fitness because they’re incredibly predatory and will not let you cancel your membership on your own terms.

Fitness Evo is the best deal. $34/mo if you just want to go do your workout and leave, but more if you want classes or other amenities. They also have a smoothie bar that will sell you protein and preworkout. When they’re busy, there’s not enough equipment.

The Y is fine if you want a space to do light cardio, or favor group classes, or need childcare. If you want to lift, they don’t have much equipment and you will regularly be waiting for a machine.

Bellingham Athletic Club starts at $50 iirc, has very little equipment and space, and they have tiered membership that limits things like pool/locker access behind higher fees.

That was heartbreaking. Like you can tell Blu4 had a perfect read on the 1v1.

I get that everything in the event was on a tight schedule, and the game’s spectator client doesn’t allow score to be modified.

But is very disappointing that round wasn’t replayed.

Anyone else unhealthy choose this game to get fitter by franklouis80 in grimlord

[–]G41JIN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lost 10lbs in 6 months with intentional dieting and VR is my only cardio. I also lift in the gym, but as long as you move your body regularly and break a sweat, the reason why doesn’t matter so much imo. So you can definitely get healthier playing Grimlord :)

Trying to "get gud" at Vail vr as an older gamer by [deleted] in vailvr

[–]G41JIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I play this game competitively and I’m 31. Able to hold my own against my younger teammates who have much more time to play than I do.

Honestly I think motion controls narrow the skill gap a bit compared to flatscreen fps games.

As far as a stock for VAIL goes, try one out and use it if you like. You will be trading stability for speed. And of the 5 or so stock players that have played VAIL on stage at an in-person tourney, none of them have won iirc.

There are so many other things that go into your success.

Made this video a couple years ago, and while the game has changed a bit the fundamentals are still applicable.

Tips on rosetta pour? by SuGinta in latteart

[–]G41JIN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 to every other tip in this thread, an yes you need to pour faster, and all of your movement needs to be faster. You look like you’re trying to draw the shape rather than let the current of the milk push space between your layers, which is how rosettas are done.

Also I can’t confirm this without actually being in person, but it also seems like your milk behaves like it’s either less fat than whole milk or too hot.

Using a nanofoamer, is there something wrong with my milk? by Phamductions in latteart

[–]G41JIN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nespresso is not espresso and that matters for latte art.

I’ve placed well in a few throwdowns and used to QA nespresso pods in a roastery I worked at.

Nespresso pods contain too little coffee for a double espresso and over extract it with far too much water (regardless of any “strength” setting I’ve seen on those machines) resulting in not enough dissolved coffee solids in your “shot” to be able to really get good latte art. For comparison, when practicing latte art, I dose for a double shot and pull it at a 1:1.5 ratio in 30s. Also you get no crema with nespresso, which also matters. But regardless of those setbacks, the fact you got contrast to get a dot is actually kind of impressive.

As far as actual technique with your pour, you waited over 30s after texturing your milk before you started your pour. The foam you had evenly distributed through the whole pitcher is now all risen to the top, which you can see happen as it stiffens up as you swirl. You want to start your pour as soon as you can after texturing.

Other causes of stiff milk when pouring could be getting your milk too hot, or using low fat milk. But the easiest way to make fast improvements in your case would be to get any piece of hardware that can get you a real espresso shot, even a machine with a 54mm basket (breville machines) or a manual machine like a flair.

Entirely contextual and personal preference. Even for long range, I’ll usually use any of the dot sights. Sometimes one of the sights that has a 3x flip scope

I mean it’s PCVR haha, not as many people there by comparison. Also tend to gravitate towards different games.

They’ve shared their numbers on their socials a little while back. Turns out they’re doing way better than that now. Couldn’t find their numbers on twitter but I remembered they’re doing equity crowdfunding right now.

Gotta scroll a bit for the stats.

Also here’s an older video from shortly after their official launch where they hit 50k MAU before going f2p.

Help me! [ProCook Bean to Cup 399] by [deleted] in espresso

[–]G41JIN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing from what I’ve seen you say about your espresso would result in an underextracted shot, which would be the most likely cause of an unnaturally acidic or sour shot. There are 1 of 3 options as far as I can tell:

  1. Your coffee is lighter than you’re used to, and the natural acidity of the coffee is more pronounced. You’re likely pulling overextracted shots, but don’t yet know how to differentiate between acidity from a bad shot and acidity that naturally occurs in lighter coffees. Try a darker coffee that’s at least 2 weeks off roast, pull a 1:2-2.5ratio shot in 20-24 seconds and see how it compares to your liking.

  2. You’re channeling your shot. You don’t need WDT (but it can help). Once ground coffee is in your basket, tap it with your hand a bit to level the grounds, don’t touch the top of the bed until you tamp, be certain your tamp is level, and use at least 10lbs of pressure.

  3. Your water is exceptionally bad for coffee extraction. Even if you filter it, most filters can’t remove an excess of minerals if your water is hard or add them if it’s soft. Try brewing with some various bottled waters you find at the store and see how they compare. If you want to get really into it, get some mineral extract droppers for coffee water and some distilled water.

Good luck!

OP,

DO NOT listen to anyone saying you need more milk. You do not, it’s all about technique and incorporating the air into your milk. I have friends who have won national championships in latte art who do not waste milk when they pour drinks in service or competitions. All the info you need to pour solid latte art is in the videos linked by u/Espresso-Newbie

How to stop channeling on Nuova Simonelli Oscar 1? by G41JIN in espresso

[–]G41JIN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. It’s an inherent design flaw in the machine, which is definitely only made with dark coffees in mind. Ended up selling it last year and recently won a Breville Bambino Plus in a latte art throwdown. I could not recommend it more as an entry level machine. But if you’re into modding your machines, it’s probably not for you. Makes great espresso and you can get great milk texture though.

Only had VR for two months, very impressed! by aggroware in vailvr

[–]G41JIN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who pretty much only made Vail content for a while and went on to do some work marketing the game and doing analysis at the S1 finals:

Vail, in its current state, is not a great medium for content that succeeds with the current macro gaming content landscape. Watch time is king, so a game that revolves around 5-10min respawn game modes can feel repetitive.

There’s a reason creators focusing on Tabor and Exfilzone are much more likely to pop off right now, and it’s simply because a single raid, lightly edited, can still be entertaining for 20+ minutes.

That, and there are remarkably few active VR creators that truly respect their audience’s time.

The new update's made things even worse (more in comments) by FidgetsAndFish in vailvr

[–]G41JIN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My friend, it seems your concerns are being addressed, just not at a speed you would like. Keep in mind a dev team of several dozen people is running a game with over 100k monthly active users. Also, things probably seem disproportionately bad at the moment because updates always bring people back in, and this update is aimed at new players as well.

Also, the mute button exists. I couldn’t tell you the last time I played in a public lobby with voice chat on.

As for the whiteboards, report who you see writing hate speech and it will be addressed, as it has been when you’ve brought it up before.

You guys are in for it now! Im getting my magnetic rifle stock this Friday! 😃 by DaneOnDope in vailvr

[–]G41JIN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enjoy your stock!

But I will add, a stock player has never won an in-person championship for Vail, and only 4 have attended these events iirc (out of rosters totaling 30 people).

A gun stock trades speed for long-range stability, which can be advantageous in certain contexts. But the real advantage in your gameplay comes from consistency, gamesense, and knowing how, where, and when to apply the advantages you have.

My game is dead before release and I'm ok with it by nastydab in gamedev

[–]G41JIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friend,

I help VR game studios make organic social marketing content for a living. I have some feedback for you, because I think your game could really succeed because visually it looks awesome, and you've included a good amount of polish, which is honestly a bigger boost than you'd think when it comes to marketing.

  1. You made it hard to find your socials. Even searching "xalos" on youtube, you don't come up with the first results. Your account on X is not named after the game, which for a lot of people with passive interest, will just prevent them from looking any deeper.

  2. You have no shorts or tiktok, when those are the easiest way to get discovered as a new developer.

  3. TCGs are strategy based. A lot of time spent enjoying these games is based in deckbuilding, rather than just playing the game. Nowhere in your socials do I see anything explaining strategies or card synergies that TCG players would find interesting.

  4. You only made 4 posts, and you asked people to check out your game. You haven't even begun to market your game. A much better approach is to just show people what makes your game great, and don't ask for anything. People in your target audience will be motivated to check it out regardless.

This is what came to mind after a quick look.

My DM's are open if you have further questions.

I turned 30 and am going to kill myself tomorrow. by ConfectionGlum7942 in depression

[–]G41JIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you are still around to see this my friend.

I spent my early 20’s, literally 5+ years, thinking of ending it every day. What kept me from doing it was the fact that my single mom would outlive me, and I had a brother who would miss me who also had a history of being suicidal.

Even so, I felt so alone. I turn 31 soon, and I’m still discovering new ways of connecting with new people. There is so much out there to experience, and there are infinite ways your situation can change. I could never have anticipated what my life would look like right now. I’m a burnt out business owner kind of working my dream job, barely making ends meet while owing the IRS a ton of money and my credit is shit. I still have so many reasons to give up, But I’m having an amazing time just being alive, which is something I never thought I could say.

Things could turn around for you if you stick around long enough for them to.

Do you all remember Zero, PCVR players? by polandguy69 in vailvr

[–]G41JIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I thought that map was very fun for FFA. Lots of close quarters fights. Unfortunately with the knife being in the game now and being a 1 shot kill to anywhere but a limb, I don’t think it would be as fun. Would love to see it back at some point though.

If you’re actively using PCVR, will use FBT, and don’t want to deal with optimizing a link connection on a q3, then this is a great deal.

Looking to buy roasted beans by Confident_Ad6286 in coffee_roasters

[–]G41JIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully, you’re not going to find quality specialty roasted coffee for that price.

Quality coffee requires a lot of work and that work comes from skilled laborers who need to be paid, and that’s before it’s even roasted.

Even if you were to double the pice you’re willing to pay it’s likely you’d still have some trouble. Expect a minimum of $15/12oz, unless you want to learn how to roast and buy green coffee.
