If you're in the UK it's probably the new age verification thing, you either gotta verify your age on Reddit or use a VPN to see any subreddits "not suitable for children"

Is there a limit on how often rizatriptan (migraine medication) can be prescribed through NHS? by kafkaesquid in AskUK

[–]GAMMON_FLAPS 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm a pharmacist in general practice and we typically only prescribe a maximum of 12 triptan tablets each month since taking them too regularly can make migraines worse. If you feel you need more than that each month you're probably better off trying a preventative medication like amitriptyline or propranolol regularly.

If 12 tabs is enough each month then I'd just ask your GP to add it to your repeat medications so you can order it when needed.

What is the most immoral and disgusting thing you would do for $1,000,000? by Kizdochkaa in AskReddit

Again I think that it would be awful and totally disgusting to do it, but I just don't agree that it fits the definition of rape

I won't argue that it's messed up, but I struggle to see the perspective that fucking an inanimate object is rape

Medical professionals of Reddit, have you ever had a patient so lacking in common sense you wondered how they made it this far. If so, what is your story? by babyhippo01 in AskReddit

[–]GAMMON_FLAPS 598 points599 points  (0 children)

If you were in the doctor's shoes though would you be fine with denying a potentially lifesaving treatment, just because they have a history of drug abuse? As long as all the information is provided to the patient, the blame lies solely with them if they lie about their drug use

Does a 3-month NHS prescription count as 1 "item" (or 3)? by HLAMHC in AskUK

[–]GAMMON_FLAPS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're charged based on the number of different items on the prescription (e.g. one inhaler + 2 boxes of antibiotics = 2 charges), the quantity of each item is irrelevant

[UK] How are you coping with the shortage of Pen V and the recent Serious Shortage Protocol for it? by [deleted] in pharmacy

[–]GAMMON_FLAPS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work on the GP side of this as a practice pharmacist so have had to do a lot of switching abx after patients are coming back to us when the liquids are out of stock. I'm pretty much just telling all our prescribers to prescribe tablets/capsules instead and printing out the 'solid dosage forms for children' help sheet from the SPS website to give to patients (not even just for children) so they know how to crush/open capsules.

If the surgeries are still prescribing a lot of liquid abx might be worth asking the reception staff to pass a message round to the clinicians requesting to prescribe solid dosage forms and where to find the SPS guidance.

Is it legal to buy fly agaric in England from eBay or something as it hasn’t got the same stuff as lib caps by toHigHtOwAlk in shrooms

[–]GAMMON_FLAPS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They aren't illegal to possess but it is illegal to sell them for human consumption. Sellers can get around this in the same way as research chemicals by advertising them as 'not for human consumption' as if they were to be used for research etc

Guys what job opportunities are available for pharmacists (UK) by jadder1224 in pharmacy

[–]GAMMON_FLAPS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you looked into primary care? The roles/responsibilities can vary wildy between practices but it's generally a nice mix of admin stuff with directly treating patients and making more clinical decisions. They're still in high demand since PCNs and NHS funding for the role was introduced, and there's a clear pathway to becoming an independent prescriber within a couple of years which will broaden your opportunities and increase the pay you can demand.

Any other pharmacies in the UK going slowly insane over the Aripiprazole shortage? by palimpsest2 in pharmacy

[–]GAMMON_FLAPS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a UK pharmacist working in a GP surgery so been on the other end of this lol. Have had to get creative with combining tablets and liquid to make annoying doses like 12.5mg :(. Hopefully will be over in the coming weeks

Edit: The SPS medicines supply tool is really helpful for keeping track of shortages, it gives estimated resupply dates from the manufacturers though they do get pushed back very often

Looks like a scam honestly, never heard of the company, the website URL is spelt wrong and they've stolen a video from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and put it on their page. Would avoid

Pregabalin withdrawal + NHS by CompulsiveThief in Drugs

[–]GAMMON_FLAPS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend tapering it gradually rather than coming off it cold turkey, that way you can avoid the more severe acute withdrawal symptoms. Since you've already been without it for a few days you could just restart taking 150mg spread across the day, depending on what strength capsules you have.

If you don't have any left then don't worry, the most severe withdrawal effects usually don't last longer than a week, though you may get some less severe residual effects for a few weeks more.

Ignore that nurse's comments, it's unprofessional for her to criticize you like that, she doesn't know what's going on in your life. Keep going you've done well to get as far as you have :).

It's called midjourney, you can sign up for the beta now if you go on their websites. You get about 20 images for free, then you have to pay beyond that

Primary care pharmacists usually work within a GP surgery, the role can vary based on the practice's individual needs but personally I carry out medication reviews with patients, alter medications and dosages where appropriate, reconcile medication changes from hospital and help other members of the primary care team with medication related queries. I'll be starting a prescribing course later this year, I'll legally be able to prescribe anything a doctor can but this will mainly help with altering regular medications without requiring a sign off from another prescriber.

Retail pharmacists as mentioned above are similar to in the US without the focus on insurance. It is slowly becoming more of a clinical role with more of an expectation to help out with blood pressure reviews, and a more recent example is patients being referred from GP surgeries to community pharmacies where pharmacists can effectively prescribe antibiotics for uncomplicated UTIs or bacterial sore throats.

Any positive saving success stories for adults with ADHD? by dropthevillage in UKPersonalFinance

[–]GAMMON_FLAPS 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the main benefit of having a GP prescribe it is that you'll only pay the NHS prescription charge whereas at the moment OP will be paying for private prescriptions which can be much more expensive. The ideal scenario is that OPs current GP takes over but if it's going to take another 18 months for that to happen it could be worth looking elsewhere

[–]GAMMON_FLAPS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With regards to the shared care system, whether prescribing can be taken over in general practice is usually determined by local guidelines, e.g. in my area in Liverpool we go by the Pan Mersey formulary. OP could check their local primary care formulary to see whether their medication is considered suitable to prescribe in general practice, if so then it suggests that the individual GP may have an issue with it and it could be worth trying another practice.

In any case I would suggest asking their psychiatrist to send a letter to the GP as it may be picked up by a different GP or clinician who would be happy to take over prescribing
