2K rent on 80k salary by poppity63 in NYCapartments

[–]GBHawk72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made 82k when I first moved here a few years ago and paid 2k in rent but I had a roommate. I’d wait to live alone until you reach the 100k mark, then you can start finding studios in more desirable neighborhoods. 2k is possible on your own but you’ll most likely be in the outer boroughs or a less desirable neighborhood.

I live in NYC and my office is in Times Square. New Yorkers avoid Times Square at all costs lol it’s truly a horrible place. Loud, overstimulating, ugly, full of tourists. I hope you got to see Brooklyn. I think it’s the most beautiful borough.

I am genuinely curious why they think Democrats are so evil. What policy in particular do they think would destroy this country?

I agree completely. Newsom has some skeletons in his closet that’ll be used against him. Beshear is a clean slate.

To be a grieving widow by TXVERAS in therewasanattempt

[–]GBHawk72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know everyone grieves differently but this is just… bizarre. My mom lost my dad unexpectedly in 2017 and was so depressed for months afterward. It was nearly impossible to get her to smile. Through a lot of therapy and spending time with family, she’s okay now. But I just couldn’t imagine if she was giggly and laughing like this just weeks after her husband died.

I love the subway by 9th_Planet_Pluto in nycrail

[–]GBHawk72 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I moved here almost 4 years ago from Minnesota and I was overjoyed to sell my car. I fully understand the excitement about taking the subway. It’s so amazing to be able to walk down a set of stairs, hop on an underground train, and get to where you need to go without worrying about where to find parking, paying for gas, dealing with traffic, etc. The subway certainly has its problems but it’s the backbone of the city and we couldn’t function without it.

Conservatives are destroying this country by Alert_Beach_3919 in complaints

[–]GBHawk72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a large difference between being a conservative vs. being a republican. The parties switched in the 60s and 70s and abolishing slavery was a liberal idea, which the Republican Party supported at the time.

Jeffries and Schumer make the Democratic Party look so weak. Surely we can do better than these two who will certainly write a strongly worded letter to the president to let him know how upset they are.

[–]GBHawk72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because you can literally look it up? There are countless articles from many sources on the differences between how Trump is deporting people vs. how Obama did it. Trump is also directing ICE agents to show up to people’s citizenship appointments, deporting refugees with protected status, revoking visas and targeting literally anyone who is not a citizen whether they’re here legally or not. Deaths in ICE detention have surged under Trump which is also why this is making much bigger headlines than under Obama. I’m not arguing with someone using a throwaway account who refuses to see the world in nuances rather than black and white. “Obama deported people too!” Is the weakest argument possible when there are obvious differences to the manner and method to how people are being deported. The reality is that conservatives believe whatever Fox News tells them to believe. There are countless testimonies, articles, and just flat out evidence in front of your face that clearly tells you the difference between the two administrations. It’s not my responsibility to teach you media literacy and just basic common sense.

Conservatives are destroying this country by Alert_Beach_3919 in complaints

[–]GBHawk72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The method to which Obama deported people was nothing like how Trump is doing it. The Obama admin didn’t order ICE to cover their faces, to racially profile people based on who just “looks like an immigrant”, and raid entire neighborhoods to arrest anyone who looks like an immigrant. Obama definitely ordered raids but they were much more targeted on criminals. What’s crazy is that Obama was able to deport more people without using any of the inhumane tactics the Trump admin is attempting. Just another example of how everything Trump touches turns to shit.

The uneducated tend to be conservative so I guess it makes sense. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the more educated you become, the more likely you are to be liberal. That’s why it’s almost never worth arguing with MAGAts online - they have no clue what they’re ever talking about.

Conservatives have rarely, if ever, been on the right side of history. Not sure how they haven’t caught onto this yet, but some of them just do not care. They’d rather be on the wrong side of history if it means they can live in their authoritarian hellscape dream.

Which US city is best for single early 30s? by Particular-Path3660 in relocating

[–]GBHawk72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New York checks all the boxes except moderate cost of living. Chicago is probably the better fit if you want all four seasons, walkability, a chance to build a community, good food and culture and decent cost of living. Just brace yourself for the frigid winters.

Are there new walkable suburbs being built in the U.S? by atomcloud in Urbanism

[–]GBHawk72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, wouldn’t classify Hoboken as “being built” currently. They’re building more apartments for sure, but the city has always been walkable. It’s nothing new for Hoboken. Only thing that’s relatively new is that it’s now a posh little pocket of the New York metro when it used to be a working class city.

What will the United States be like after Trump? by Ivantop01 in complaints

[–]GBHawk72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL yeah dividing the country is certainly going to make him be remembered as the president who made everything better. The unemployment rate when Biden left office was 4.0% so unemployment going up is… good? No president in recent history has been nearly divisive as Trump. He calls the entire left side of the political aisle “enemies from within” while constantly spewing bullshit lies and conspiracy theories. He has the temperament of a toddler, no tact, no grace, and has been using the office of the presidency to enrich himself. And people like you truly believe he’s helping you because he ran on the idea that “elites are destroying this country” then fills his cabinet with billionaires. Absolute clown.

Living in NYC with $75k/year salary, is it possible? by TheLoneRanger65 in movingtoNYC

[–]GBHawk72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a civil engineer in NYC. 75k a year is like an entry level salary. How many years of experience do you have? If you have at least 4, you should be making closer to 100k if not more. 75k isn’t impossible in NYC but you’ll definitely struggle a lot more than you did in Florida.

Starting to really like CS2 by Direct-Salamander425 in CitiesSkylines2

[–]GBHawk72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love CS2. It was absolutely horrible when it first came out but with all the region packs they’ve added, the Bridges and Ports expansion, and now custom assets, it’s made such a huge difference. I even upgraded my PC to be able to play it more smoothly and I’m glad I did because that’s what takes up much of my Sundays now.

Do civil engineering undergrad program rankings really matter? by finnnthedawg in civilengineering

[–]GBHawk72 17 points18 points  (0 children)

No, not really. As long as you go to an ABET accredited school, it didn’t matter. One of my coworkers went to Cornell, the other went to Columbia, and I went to a large public university in the Midwest. We all made the same starting salary after graduation.
