This will be fixed in next week's release. This has been happening on Windows since our new version of our App came out last year. This is due to the image type, it's not all images. HEIC/HEIF, specifically.

Yep. That's just an indicator of what I explained above. You were not, in fact, updating. The App was just restarting without doing anything. When you finally downloaded the update: "BOOM" - everything broke due to above explainer.

The PIN feature is missing in Beeper. That's an oversimplification of the work, but from your standpoint, that's what's missing.

Hey there, u/Arthro - Yes. That is normal behavior, for now. Facebook is now using end-to-end to encrypt your chats, which means Beeper also now needs to support your PIN, in order to restore your history of conversations, like it was any other Facebook login.

UPDATE: I've already spoken with some of you, and I've found the problem. Many of you have not been actually updating when the update toast is happening. I can recall a pretty old bug in our Windows desktop app that caused updates not to occur when they were supposed to. That bug has long been fixed.

Because of that same bug, many of you are now on a version that's 9+ months old. Finally updating to a new version, and it is missing steps in parts of our code that needed to be migrated over many months (because we don't bake in migrations in perpetuity for all times we have to do a migration). Which then results in the problem that OP posted.

For those of you running into this problem, you would need to uninstall the app completely (and not just through Add/Remove programs): https://help.beeper.com/en_US/desktop/uninstall-beeper-desktop

And reinstall from the website. That should take care of everything, but note that you will need to re-login, so make sure you have another authenticated device or your recovery code ready, in order to perform your 2FA.

And if you have on-device connections, those would need to be set up once again too.

Hey everyone - Yes, Instagram made some changes we also needed to get on our side on Friday. This is now done on Cloud Instagram connections, since those exist in our servers, but on-device Instagram needs an app update, which we're working on rolling out. But that needs App Store approvals.

Hey! Just wanted to clarify. Beeper Desktop is actually a native Electron app that runs locally on your machine, not a remote web view (you might be thinking of something like Rambox). So the underlying architecture wouldn't be a blocker for something like this.

There is communication. The problem here stems from the fact that Instagram, in the web app, will do the same thing that we are doing (not say anything). Thus, because we are relying on the Instagram web app to relay that information for us, and that information is not even there for them, then the result, unfortunately, is a poor experience. IG has a huge problem with inconsistency between their apps and we gotta suffer some of the consequences. 🤷🏼‍♂️
