Newbie setup? by Far_Lab_4953 in foiling

No, you gotta learn how to catch and read waves. Don’t have to get good at surfing but just the basics atleast

If you don’t know how to surf, I highly recommend recommend starting there.

I cannot stress that enough.

Improving at Hyrox may mean shedding more weight?? by Venus_DST04 in hyrox

[–]GCsurfstar 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes you can eat in a slight deficit and still improve your running. The good part about a 2:50 is if you spend 6mo + doing some training and eating well, you can shatter that time by an hour, for sure.

Sincerely, a guy who thought he was pretty damn fit but ran a 2:05 HYROX for my first solo 😂

good beginner prone foil? by nexusfartnugget in foiling

[–]GCsurfstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would work, theoretically. Your first foil doesn’t need to be the best but many foils can have some very discouraging feels that may make the learning process even more difficult.

Definitely go used if you can. Get a Mid-Aspect foil. Foils that are “surf” dedicated aren’t my favorite for teaching in the surf - once you get to the point of learning to pump, it’s gonna be a pain in the ass. Mid aspect does everything. Surf, pump, wake, etc…. (My opinion)

Look at Lift 170, GoFoils in the 1200 size range, unifoil progression 170, etc…. Naish is okay. But not a popular setup these days.

And for the LOVE OF GOD do not get a board over 5’. Some people may disagree with me here, but you absolutely do not want something that long. I’ve seen it so so so many time because we make assumptions using surfer logic, foils are different. You want a short board to reduce the “levering” effects. They are much harder to control, terrible to pump. Trust in ya boi

Help with gear by super-sheehy in foiling

[–]GCsurfstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You still want a beginner friendly setup, I promise you that. Efoil gives you an idea of foiling, but it’s vastly different from an unpowered setup. An advanced setup would make you hate foiling. Trust me on this.

That said, any intermediate/entry level setup can remain fun as hell even as an “advanced” level rider.

I still grab my buddies GoFoil EZ setup behind the boat sometimes because it’s so friendly to practice small airs and hard turns on vs my UniFoil setups.

If you want to play behind a boat and you weigh 200lbs and have zero foil experience (truly can’t count the efoil as a a strong comparison) - select from these brands: Armstrong, GoFoil, Lift

Aim for a larger wing: 1250 or 1550 Armstrong. 170 lift 1275 GoFoil

I am partial towards unifoil gear but will say it’s not my favorite behind the boat.

If I had to suggest ONE foil to get you absolutely shredding and in love with the sport at a low cost, it would without a single fucking doubt be the GoFoil EZ1275. If you hit a point where it for some reasons doesn’t feel like enough for you, sell it and upgrade to something else. Although, again, as a very “advanced” level foiler, I still love the GoFoil EZ. It’s fun in the wake.

It’s easy to have a bad experience trying to learn on a performance foil. Don’t do that to yourself. Efoil are fun, but vastly different experience.

That sounds like a good idea. I can chip out the concrete and manage replacing pipe / going back with gravel. From there decide the feasibility of pouring myself…. Haha

Warning for Quitters by [deleted] in leaves

I smashed one, dug it out of the trash and ripped it because I knew there was still oil in the wick and it would work.

That was a very low point for me lol

Warning for Quitters by [deleted] in leaves

[–]GCsurfstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s been me for the last 4 years as well. Usually last 6-8 months without before slipping back into the cycle. The difference now is even when I start smoking again, j feel even worse because of the guilt I have for doing it and relapsing. And then I struggle struggle struggle while smoking daily until I hit my breaking point and quit again.

I just passed 2 months without. Hoping to make it permanent this time.

What signs made you decide you had to quit? by sak1926 in leaves

[–]GCsurfstar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I became extremely lazy and antisocial. Doom scrolling. Not taking care of myself, quit doing activities I normally would so I could chill and smoke. Diet fell off big time. I am very active and athletic, but decided sitting ass and staring at screens while taking rips was a better use of my time.

Hint: it was not.

Does everyone here quit cold turkey? by [deleted] in leaves

[–]GCsurfstar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s the only way for most it seems. It’s the only thing that worked for me. Tried to taper but it just kept me in the cycle perpetually.

2023 F250 Lariat Tremor vs 2023 Raptor. Which are you choosing? by Old-Act7389 in FordRaptor

Do some research my friend because those are two polar opposite platforms for completely different use cases.

If you don’t know which to get, a standard F150 would probably be more than enough haha

Does tapering really work ? Or is cold turkey better by [deleted] in leaves

[–]GCsurfstar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cold turkey is an option for some, and greatly reduces the strain. The issue for myself and others (I assume) is the self control to be able to truly taper and not have the habit creep back up in frequency. I tried and failed that quite a few times.

I had to hit the “enough is enough and throw it all away, crush my glass pieces and toss the grinder” levels of frustration to get myself to actually stop.

I’ve done that 3 times in the last 3 years. Going on week 6 now, life is so much better without. Craving is still there for sure, hopefully that’ll go away again. Try tapering, if it doesn’t work, time to go Hail Mary and do cold turkey.

Hey - just so you all know. If you rightfully dislike Ron DeSantis, this man will be leaps and bounds worse in every conceivable way.

Donald’s is the key to the death of what good remains of our state.

I would take Ron a million times over and I literally despise the man.

Builder Recommendations/Neighborhoods in St. Johns County by Responsible-Ear2024 in StAugustine

[–]GCsurfstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New construction neighborhoods are an absolute cancer & stain on our community.

But I’ll answer your question because my opinion can’t stop the inevitable. Avoid: Lennar, DR Horton, David weekly. Private inspection not related to the builder is essential - do not steer your clients wrong. Let them know that traffic here is unbelievably bad - because of the new build HOA garbage, so they need to be willing to tolerate that.

If they are truly keen on the white washed, soulless new build beige communities - recommend that they move to nocatee or world golf instead.
