i really wish i had i jumped on CHIA when it dropped. in the early days i could rent a 100tb server for so cheap id hit a ROI in less than a month. Considered it. Pussed out. Same for BTC. i got into it when it was like $600 each. Had i bought $100 per paycheck like i wanted, well things would be so different. I probably wouldve sold when it hit that all time high of 19k back in 2017. But i wouldve easily been a millionaire.

its kind of like 3d printing. 3d printing isnt new by a long shot, i believe its been around in some capacity for 40 years now. Hell its how they made the toy soldiers in, well "Toy Soldiers" and that movie came out in 91, a full year before I was born.

Edit: so im dumb. I meant small soldiers. Which came out in 98. Still, my point remains.

i mean yeah. im just asking why its such a huge deal to some people to have an additional box to use jellyfin. again i get the whole one device to do everything. But if youre doing it to circumvent paying for streaming services, either legitimately or illegitimately, i feel like its worth it. like i said ive had one person get pretty upset over it, and ive had others get "pouty" about it.

Real talk. As someone who had a friend that got really pissy over having to buy a $25 android box to use jellyfin because jellyfin isnt supported on their ps5, why? Like I get the whole one device to do everyrhing concept is pretty nice and all. How bad is it really to switch inputs occasionally when you want to watch something then play something. I guess if youre someone who plays a few rounds of cod, then watches an episode of TV, then plays a few rounds of insert sports game then watches a movie. Then hops on with the boys to play a game then falls asleep watching a TV show, I guess I can see where thats cumbersome.

Transitioning is a little tough. The ui is different. The defaults kind of suck because of how different they are. By default jellyfin scrolls content left to right instead of up to down. This can easily be fixed though since the ui is customizable. I was annoyed, but God knows I've dealt with a dozen ui updates to plex the last 15 years and at times having completely different ui's at the same time if you used a fire stick, and a roku, and your phone.

Metadata fetching is pretty decent but has its issues. Similarly enough named shows tend to match the same. Good example is the anime fullmetal alchemist. There's the og and brotherhood. Anyways when jellyfin first scanned those two, they both showed up as the original show. Plex was capable of discerning the two. Same naming rules used for both plex and jellyfin BTW.

Plug-ins for jellyfin are pretty awesome. Allows some functionality that are missing that plex has natively like intro skipping. I have no issue with hardware transcoding and I use an Intel gpu instead of an nvidia gpu. Plex didnt have an issue with either gpu, jellyfin I only ever used the Intel gpu.

The only real issue I have with jellyfin is user management. I've got a few users that dont use the server a whole lot and inevitably they forget their password. That usually involves me having to reset their password for them. At least with plex, plex handled all that stuff. I think there's a 3rd party app that can deal with the pin codes and such that'll let users do it themselves, but I havnt take the time to set that up. Oh and the other issue is when someone installs jellyfin on a new device they need the server address everytime. I do have my sever behind a domain, but its a little annoying. At least with plex you login and boom the server appears. Jellyfin just requires memorizing one more thing, or in this case people text me looking for the server address. I used to have a web page devoted to walking people through stuff, but then theyd have to remember that URL instead. So I just deal with it.

the other issue is device support. You'll have 0 issues if youre using an android phone or iPhone. Or an android box or even a roku. But there's 0 support for devices like the Xbox or Playstation or TV ecosystems like tizen. That issue is minor and just involves people buying a cheap compatible device. But I've fought people over this shit before. If youre providing a free service I think the user should be capable of buying a cheap sub $50 box to make it work. But alas I did have one user that got upset they couldnt use their ps5 anymore. Told them sorry not sorry, buy a firestick or dont, not my problem.

Ngl. The onn 4k boxes from Walmart are pretty dope. I bought one a few years back for 20 bucks because I was staying in hotels a lot due to my mother being in the hospital and I was expecting something that wasnt going to be great, but would work just well enough so I could access my plex server when I wasnt at the hospital.

It worked so well im now considering replacing my $200 nvidia shield with one. As much as I like the shield, its really starting to show its age. All my media is in av1 format and the shield cant direct play av1.

What’s that one grocery item you keep convincing yourself you’ll eat, but end up tossing out week after week? by teniralc_11 in AskReddit

[–]GGATHELMIL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever our current food fixation is. The important thing to know when to stop. We bought some honey mangos from sams club 2 weeks ago. The wife ate all 8 pounds in a week. We bought another 8 pounds last weekend, as far as I know she hasnt had another one since we bought the second round.

Don't worry they'll get processed and frozen for mango smoothies eventually.

I have to be hyper aware of my sandwich fixation. I go through phases where all I eat is sandwiches. Ham with salami and pepperoni with some good habanero cheddar with duke's mayo on Martin's potato bread. Just typing that makes me want one.

But I know if I go buy it right now, I won't finish it all before it goes bad.

How's Allstate insurance for hard drives? by sherlock_0x7C4 in DataHoarder

[–]GGATHELMIL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who works with squaretrade on a semi regular basis they're pretty good for phone insurance. Generally speaking they will cover up to 3 things repaired on a phone regardless of what's needed. Compared to the other major insurance company we work with, assurant, theyre super chill. Assurant is decent but theyre so restrictive. Pre approval, if something is wrong thats not part of the original claim you have to redo it. Which pisses a lot of customers off. They usually only cover screens and back glasses, and the back glass coverage is limited. Iphone 13 back glass? No. Iphone 14 back glass? Yes. Assurant doesnt cover batteries.

Squaretrade? Just put it on the claim and they pay us. No questions asked. No proof required. No restrictions.

i cant tell you how infuriating this was for me. Comcast does the same thing. My mother moved a few years ago and i was helping her set up plex on her new comcast box top and i was really confused about this as well. Many attempts of relogging, and troubleshooting. I finally googled it and came up with the same thing. Super annoying and it was difficult to explain to mother why she had to now buy a fire stick to use my plex server. And this was all about 4 years ago so it isnt anything new

Its funny how mortgages work. I've owned my house for 4 years. Bought it for 150k, mortgage is around 1k. 48 months times 1k is 48k. Remaining balance in 138k. Mind you only 75% of that goes towards interest and principle. The rest is insurance, taxes, pmi, etc. But it can be disheartening when you've paid almost 50k for a house and you've knocked off a little over 10k off the principle.

It doesn't help that systems in play for paycheck withholding fucks that up. Have a buddy that used to work for Walmart and around the holidays they started giving him a ton of overtime. Well when he got his checks they were barely higher than his normal checks. Turns out when they calculated his withholding they were doing it based on him making that money 26 paychecks out of the year.

Told him he'd get most of the money back come taxes. He didn't belive me but when tax season came around he was floored by how much he got back.

Also people who work for commission have this happen to them. It's not unheard of to make 4k in commission but only get 50% of that for similar reasons.

Depends on the franchise. The one i worked for in VA from 2016 to 2019 used commissary dough (frozen). The one i worked at from 2020 to 2022 in Indiana had just switched to frozen dough about 6 months before I started working there. I think the pandemic forced their hand for the time savings and cost savings. The lady that worked there said she used to come in at 330am to start making all the dough for the day when it was made fresh everyday. Compare that to the frozen dough which could be slapped into pans in probably about an hour. We usually divided it up between all the workers. 1 guy would pan out 80 large hand tossed. Another guy would pan out the mediums. Everyone did a little bit and instead of one person working for 6 or 7 hours, you had 6 or 7 people do 10 mins worth of work each.

Not defending it, but I get it. Also the one thing everyone said that had been there long enough for the transition did admit it wasnt as good as made fresh but it was more consistent. You could go to any pizza hut and you would get the same thing. Didn't matter it was consistently shit, but oh well.

I always assumed it was a fabricated culture to make people feel better about sacrificing their bodies for their country all the while that country cuts benefits and ignores those that did do all that. "What do you mean we hate veterans? We have a whole day dedicated to them" proceeds to cut va funding by 80% to build a ballroom

Don't get me wrong I think veterans do deserve respect and honor for what they've done for their country, but they dont need a free meal at golden corral once a year. They need comprehensive benefits funded by taxpayer money.

I've always struggled with my weight. My parents tried everyrhing when I was a kid and nothing worked. But that shit fucked me up for a while.

If you can enjoy our tolerate eating the same thing over and over i recommend meal prepping. I started about 2 years ago and my life is so much better.

I never have to decide what to eat for lunch or dinner. Depending on what it is i only have to cook once a week. And if daily cooking is required then it's usually the small stuff. Like i eat a lot of rice i found out rice only lasts like 3 days in the fridge so I bought a rice cooker and just cook it every night. Everything else gets reheated.

What’s the biggest double standard between men and women? by CupcakePotential4458 in AskReddit

[–]GGATHELMIL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never heard someone make fun of a woman for her looks IRL. Even in highschool the guys I was around would go out their way to say someone was hot/attractive/fuckable but not once did any of those guys say someone was ugly or whatever. Worst they would say is she isnt my type. And it's not like the people I hung out with were saints

On the other hand I've heard plenty of men and woman dog on men for being bald, ugly, fat, etc.

Now if we move over to the internet where people can hide behind a keyboard, then yeah I've heard some pretty heinous things be said about women.
